As the previous FLCL volume, this one covers 2 stories. The first one is pretty pointless. The second is really great and had that balance I like between comedy and drama! Looking forward to volume 3!

The second novelization of Fooly Cooly opens with my least favorite episode, but I liked that the third-person perspective was somewhat limited to Ninamori. She escapes the media frenzy of her dad's scandal by spending time with the Nandabas. When she's with Naota she's vulnerable, but their mutual need to be the biggest fake adult in the room collides by the end of the chapter. The second half of the book however, is one of my favorite episodes because it forces Naota to deal with his insecurities. The story had me gripped and thinking throughout most of this volume, and sent me scrolling through Youtube for video essays.

The writing (or maybe translation) style in the light novels makes them relatively short. But because Fooly Cooly asks you to dig deeper into Naota's empty head, the author (or translator) has a tendency to overexplain things that the characters feel, rather than showing them deal with the emotions themselves. I've already started the third volume, and that's still present. The writing style doesn't take me out of the experience too much. These are fun reads that manage to capture the surreal fun of the show and put it into words.
