Chris Claremont is a writer of American comic books, best known for his 16-year (1975-1991) stint on Uncanny X-Men, during which the series became one of the comic book industry's most successful properties.
Claremont has written many stories for other publishers including the Star Trek Debt of Honor graphic novel, his creator-owned Sovereign Seven for DC Comics and Aliens vs Predator for Dark Horse Comics. He also wrote a few issues of the series WildC.A.T.s (volume 1, issues #10-13) at Image Comics, which introduced his creator-owned character, Huntsman.
Outside of comics, Claremont co-wrote the Chronicles of the Shadow War trilogy, Shadow Moon (1995), Shadow Dawn (1996), and Shadow Star (1999), with George Lucas. This trilogy continues the story of Elora Danan from the movie Willow. In the 1980s, he also wrote a science fiction trilogy about female starship pilot Nicole Shea, consisting of First Flight (1987), Grounded! (1991), and Sundowner (1994). Claremont was also a contributor to the Wild Cards anthology series.
Not sure why there is only this collection. But I’ll be reviewing the entire Brood Saga (#154-157, 161-167), including New Mutants #3 (which ties-in).
I feel like if this saga was shorter, I would’ve liked it a lot more. The suspense of who would turn first, how were they going to escape their doomed fate? But the story just dragged on in a way that took ALL the suspense out and left me wondering why the heck it took them so long to transform.
While I like that the New Mutants were included in this story, the fact that the X-Men just burst into the mansion and start battling them (knowing who they are) without a good reason just frustrates me. They start attacking KIDS in the middle of the night because they don’t want a mind-reading alien to detect them? If you don’t want a mind-reading alien to know you're there, attack the alien first!
Anyway, there were quite a few really big moments in this story that kept things interesting such as Carol becoming Binary. But overall, this saga felt much longer than it really needed to be.
The X-Men battling what are essentially a race of Xenomorphs... and losing?
That is what essentially happens in this story. Well, in the beginning anyways. I actually read from issue 160-171, to get the full story in its entirety. I know this volume only covers a few issues, but I couldn't really find another location to add it, so... here it is. I thought this was a pretty harrowing storyline overall. I mean, they get captured and the brood add baby queen broods into their bodies. So even when they escape, they still have to wait for the oncoming change into broods.
Of course in the end, they cure themselves but then realize there is another brood back on Earth in Xavier's body. Meanwhile, Xavier has assembled a new team of young mutants already (he does that a lot) because he assumes the core team is dead. The X-men, in a totally dick move, burst into the mansion - which has LITERALLY just been rebuilt - to look for Xavier, and begin attacking the kid team. Ah good ol comics! There's also the side plot of Carol Danvers, yes THAT Carol Danvers, transforming into Binary. Towards the end of this storyline, Rouge shows up asking for help because the memories she stole from Carol are now driving her insane and this... doesn't sit right with Binary as you could probably assume.
A good storyline, but boy does it take a lot of twists and turns, this is worth a read if you are a fan of the X-Men. If not, it might be too batshit crazy for the casual fan.
X-Men The Brood Saga The Uncanny X-Men #161-167.
