Disappointing Survey of Different Types of Meditation

This is a very short book. The PDF ARC copy I received is 41 pages long. It comes across as a brief survey of different meditative practices. It is not solely about mindfulness meditation as the subtitle suggests. As the book is so short, not much time is spent on each type of meditation surveyed. Some get a scant paragraph, not enough information to really instruct you about how to do the practice. The author splits the survey of meditations bizarrely, with the bulk of them being in a chapter about “Taking Edginess Off in the Modern Day” and another fairly large group in a chapter that is supposed to contain meditation worksheets. That chapter had only one proper meditation worksheet (although it had three others that were called worksheets but were not), some meditations, and bizarrely, a number of exercises that had nothing whatsoever to do with meditation directly, though some may lead to meditation or be a part of it, like progressive relaxation and visualizations. All in all, I found this to be a disappointing book on meditation, and I would not recommend it for beginners unless you are just looking for a survey of different types of meditations.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Not terrible

Beginner in the title is not an understatement. This is the absolute basics with only the smallest amount of detail. If you want guidance on a meditation practice, start here but be prepared to look elsewhere for real learning.

This is a good brief introduction to many of the types of meditation out there. Gives some understanding as to the origins of some meditation and how/why it works. Also have some exercises to begin your practice.

This was an interesting read. There were a few techniques that I already use and there are a couple that I am going to try. I suggest beginners read this book because it is easy to follow.

I received an ARC copy and I am voluntarily leaving a review.
