God with Us: Encountering Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew

Rate this book
Much has been said about why Jesus died. This book focuses on why Jesus lived. God with Encountering Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew shows that Jesus didn’t just come to be our teacher, a miracle work or prophet, or even just Israel’s savior and redeemer. Jesus is Emmanuel, God with us. Notable Scripture scholar Edward Sri leads readers on a faithful exploration of Jesus’s kingdom-building mission and how it revealed God presence, which remains with us today. Helpful discussion questions are provided for personal and group study. This newly expanded edition of the study originally titled The Mystery of the On the Gospel of Matthew is an outstanding introduction to the first gospel.

Honestly surprised this book isn’t more popular. Even after years of bible study and team formations with Dr. Sri, I found most of this book new and very interesting. Perfect read for a student whose mind is blown by the Old Testament prefiguring the New, and the New reflecting the Old.

God with us

Edward Sri brings the love of his Catholic faith and his wealth of knowledge to a new level. His understanding of scripture and how he explains their meaning is outstanding. I always learn something new and I'm grateful for his teaching style. I've read several books by Edward Sri and hope to own all of his books.

This book works as a nice companion to the Gospel of Matthew. This book focuses on the forest rather than the trees, so to speak. It is not extremely in the weeds, but rather focuses on the main themes that are developed in Matthew's Gospel. I found this to be a helpful guide to understanding Matthew's Christology.

3.5 stars. Good book, but not the “wow” that No Greater Love was.

Read this in our church book group. I had never read this author and shall read more. I am familiar with Matthew's Gospel, but learned some new insights. Well done.

This is a solid overview of the Gospel of Matthew. It is scholarly and profound but is written such that those of us who are not scholars can understand it.

Amazing! Sri really explains how the Old Testament prophecies are fulfilled in the life of Jesus Christ.

Very approachable book on the Gospel of Matthew. For me it was solid but not outstanding, but I’d recommend as an entry level book into the gospel of Matthew.
