A Love So Beautiful

Rate this book
Television and novels label us boys and girls who are friends, and live awfully close together since young as “childhood sweethearts”, moreover, they generally divide it into two categories:

One, the “in love with each other” type. Two people who are close together like siblings, poking honeycombs and getting stung by bees together, stealing sweet potatoes and getting beaten together. By the time the two would look back, only then would they realize that the friendship from long ago has slowly blossomed into love.

The other one is the “sees and hates each other” type. Two people who opposes the other with equal intensity, already itching to rush ahead to bite the other when spotted from a distance. When they get the chance, they’d pull the tire valve of each other’s bikes. But later on, when the two would grow up, they would suddenly realize — ah! this is true love.

Unfortunately, Jiang Chen and I are neither of the above mentioned. In a very long time, me and him were simply just neighbors who live across each other. Him playing his piano daily, me watching Chibi Maruko-chan with gusto. Occasionally, when I forget the content in our homework, I would press the doorbell of their house. He would always mock me, and impatiently ask why I didn’t remember.

Probably, because I’m seeking out a favor, so I never bickered with him. Of course, it might also be because I don’t like to argue with people since young. I’m someone calm and collected, a little bit extraordinarily

I absolutely loved this book. The tv show is super cute too and does not differ much from the book. It was pretty hilarious. I think this is going to become one of my favourites in the “feel good” category.

I loved the drama once I got to a certain point in it, but the book is so much better! The drama spent too much time on the two main characters' high school years in my opinion while the bulk of this novel took place after their three year break-up when Jiang Chen returned with the school stories interspersed as remembrances or side stories. Furthermore, the book and the drama have a lot of differences, especially where the supporting characters are concerned.

The book itself hasn't been published yet with an English translation, but I did find one online. With the drama on Netflix, I hope it's considered along with its companion novel "Put Your Head on My Shoulder".

I saw the web series A Love So Beautiful and found out it was based on a novel. After some stumbling around the internet I found this lovely blog that translated the entire book to share with the world. A side note the blog's icon is the first prince from another lovely Chinese series Ashes of Love. I was delighted to see the handsome tragic character as I loved him too!! I believe the translation team consisted of three people and wow definitely lots of praises for them!! For doing the hard work and also including detailed t.n translation notes which provided cultural tips. The book and the series were humorous, long, romantic. The story spans roughly 6 years starting when the main characters were 17 y/o high school students into their young adult life. This was my first time with a main novel that also had side stories.

So realistic it's okay? They leave a lot of things unsaid in this relationship. The ML is always trying to get one over the FL from his pride. They aren't often on the same page. Many of their conversations are cut off before they can get to a really good understanding. In a way it's realistic, but as a reader it's frustrating as heck.

I was really dreading reading the sidestories, actually, because they go over incidences in their younger years, and they really hurt my heart on the FL's behalf. I was right, and also wanted to smack the ML whenever he made the FL cry. There's a certain imbalance in their relationship that I didn't feel was satisfactorily ironed out. All in all, my feelings once I finished reading was half happy half frustrated.

This is very realistic, i think? And a lot of things are left unsaid, like the in laws, the crushes and so on..

ML - well, i guess lots of people will feel 50-50 because yeah, he's good but he's the typical traditional man, yk? But he's bit modern too? To say he's egoistic, alpha male and so on, nah i dont think so. Sometimes you can see how ego he is and domineering in terms of letting the FL do all housework.. but the more you read, you realised, he's good eh. He said this and that but at the end he's the one who's doing it. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, YOU CAN SEE HOW MUCH HE LOVES THE FL.

FL - Er, tbh, she's quite unlikeable xD. Truly hate how stupid and the fact that she's too lazy to understand something is.. haih.. terrible.. terrible.. so, to sum up her personality, i think she's too chill. Too carefree.. running away from problem.. but aye! She suits the ML la for sure.

So, i think this couple is suitable. Do they compliment each other? In a way, i guess. But can't really put this on my best couple list. And, i only like the part after they start to dating. Before dating, I know that ML likes her but it truly does feel like one sided. ML so mean siaaa. But somehow after the dating, ML be good and FL can fight back which I truly like. Atleast after dating, i can see that they are on the same level and not only FL running to ML. 🙃

Is this novel worth reading over and over? Nope. XD thinking of reading story about her office friends but i kinda can't get into this author style of writing.
Wanna know more about Su's family, Wu's family and more but nahhh I'll just let it be 😭😭

The FL is hilarious, but besides that, I wish we could see more sides of her. She once expressed her insecurity at always being the first one to initiate anything with the ML but all of her fears instantly disperse in the next few sentences.... and she proposes to him again... girl stand up!!!

While a lot of those moments of her chasing the ML are supposedly funny and cute, I found myself speechless at her actions. In comparison to the ML, she has already moved the heavens for him a hundred times. He's moody and reserved except for the instances where he is suddenly affectionate and even then he acts coy...at his grown age...

Too many times I've wondered if there was something wrong with him (in general) or something wrong with her (for chasing him)...

Anyway, despite all this it makes perfect sense that they're made for each other.

The writing itself was enjoyable which is why my rating isn't as low as how the romance made me feel. I really liked the FL's narration, her bizarre analogies and her overall dramatic personality.

Thanks to wonderful translation. 🙏

The novel is so much better than the drama! Written down, it has a lot more subtext that you completely miss in drama form. I read it three times and my enjoyment increased with every reading. I didn't like the main couple's relationship in the first reading. The subtleties in their conversation and actions went over my head and I labeled them as imbalanced and abusive. But once I put the book down, I couldn't let the couple go in my head. Scenes in the book kept coming back to me, so I read the story again. With every rereading, their love gets sweeter and their story more precious. It's short, sweet, beautiful, and definitely a romance to read.

This book was just so sweet. I read an English translation of this Chinese novel, and just loved all the cultural idioms explained. Sometimes I just couldn't stand Jiang Chen, but then again you love him because he was so dedicated and loyal to the spastic girl from high school. LOVED. Now I am trying, with great difficulty trying to find an English translation of the next book in the series: To Our Warm Hours. If anyone can find it, let me know.

I really liked the series a lot and finding out it was based on a book and that 3 amazing girls translated it for us non Chinese speakers was just what my withdrawal needed.

At first I was not happy with Jiang Cheng but becoming more familiar with their relationship I accepted their dinamic. Both human and flawed but mostly in love with each other. A love so beautiful indeed.

When you’re tired and your brain need to rest from heavy seriousness books, this simple yet a cute love story can help make your heart fluttered and smiling just by imagine those characters. I read the translation with some explanations about those Chinese idioms and it keeps me hook for a day whilst I finished the book.

A must read. I watched the the drama before I read the book. Neither was a disappointment although I prefer the book better. The characters were well described; and I liked how the author made the female lead, a girl who didn’t fall in love with outer appearances.
I liked how Jian Chen is soft for Xiao Xi, and how she’s dense to it all from the beginning. I like how the story is cute and dreamy.

Is it weird that I felt empty after finishing this? I got so used to reading 1-2 chapters whenever I could and now it’s just… gone.

The way the author pulls in literature quotes and other random facts did well in highlighting Chen Xiaoxi's eccentric personality and unique perspective. And I can see how well Shen Yue did in bringing this character to life.

As a sincere fan of the A Love So Beautiful (致我们单纯的小美好), it was a fun experience to see how our iconic scenes were first put into words on pages. And what makes it a greater read for fellow fans is the side stories featuring life after marriage + awkward daddy Jiang Chen. (Adorable!) It also will make us appreciate the screenwriters of the series much more for adding our beloved Jing Jing and Lu Yang into the plot and thus colouring the story to perfection.

But I must say, there were times when the characters seemed plainly too mean, too one-dimensional, and lacked to portray growth from their teen days for the sake of consistent "character concept". And I can't help but feel pity as the story is great to us readers only because we get to see both of their perspectives on the matter. In real life, communication is the key to relationships and a bad partner like Jiang Chen shouldn't be tolerated that much!

Perhaps, it is because of their miraculous compatibility despite the million realistic odds against them, their love was "meant to be"? I don't know. Overall, To Our Pure Little Beauty is a fun read with precious scenes. 3/5

Thank you to t e a - q u i l a team for the diligent and high quality translations.

The thing about this is it's mundane tone writing even if there are funny parts. I think this is how love is portrayed beautifully: loving the person even with their bad habits. I can't express enough how much I adore this.
