After years of tension, war has finally come to the Union worlds. Hordes of rebels, seeking revenge for their lost worlds, ravage the Peripheral Zones.
One of the leaders of the rebellion is Charon Antares, a strict and shrewd dictator who doesn’t accept any weaknesses or cowardice. He has been struggling for years to liberate his planet, Zetherion, from the Union control. When another one of his braver mission ends in disaster, the rich and powerful sovereign plans to deprive him of his authority. To save his status, Antares agrees to execute her insane order that may cost the lives of thousands of his people.
A young and easy-going girl named Cerridwen lives in a peaceful world. One day, by accident, she comes in Antares’s way. When she finds out about the tragedy that happened to her family, she vows revenge, but without collaboration with Antares and the rebels, she will not be able to fulfil her plan.
Meanwhile, a group of the Union scientists decides to end the enemy’s invasions, once and for all - they build a deadly, inhumane weapon out of sight of the government.

Many Questions Remain

Bloodstained Skies The Hostile Alliance Part I The Root of Rage by Alex Carter Emerson, is the story of Cerridwen Felvennis, a young and naïve woman, growing up sheltered by a father devoted to protecting her from every possible harm. The story becomes a whirlwind of Cerridwen being introduced to the reality of survival in a cruel world. The Union controlling society with an iron hand is being pushed by Rebels led by Devi Kali, a woman with enough money and mystique to make her Rebels feel she is a mortal God. Certain scientists within the Union want to create a SynthBreed soldier robot activated by a human brain to fight and destroy the Rebels. Trouble is the SynthBreed soldier would have brain implants giving permanent, total control over them to the Union. Cerridwen’s over-protective father and her hated brother just happen to be the keys to the brain control. Being headstrong and foolish, Cerridwen lands in the midst of the Rebels whose goal is to stop the Union from creating the SynthBreed. Cerridwen is a thorn in every Rebel’s side except for Nadee Chandri, who befriends and protects her. Author Alex Carter Emerson now has the bones of his story.

Other than the rambling nature of the tale told by Author Alex Carter Emerson, the underlying story thread remains true. Emerson does his best writing in the battle scenes. The descriptions of the amoured warriors with faces hidden behind golden masks of monsters, the detail of perceptions during fights to the death and descriptions of weariness of heated battles are quite vivid. The depiction of the warrior on the Book Cover begins to make sense in the last Chapters of the story.

I found the story disjointed at times. Author Alex Carter Emerson has great potential, and a strong edit of his book would be helpful. As I ponder the story now finished, I can see where he is headed. The ending leaves no doubt there will be a sequel.

I rate the book, Bloodstained Skies The Hostile Alliance Part I The Root of Rage, as an overall 3 out of 5.

Bloodstained Skies: The Hostile Alliance
Part I: The Root of Rage

A humanoid, an insectoid and a reptilian walk into a bar...or a warehouse..or a spaceship....and somebody (or everybody) starts shooting. A decent, plucky young woman who was just minding her own business gets caught up in the action, losses people she loves and takes sides in a great galactic rebellion. Action, adventure, gunfights, close escapes follow – and with great regularity. All in all, author Alex Carter Emerson delivers an exciting tale that makes for a fun read. And, best of all, he promises to continue the saga of his heroine, twenty-year-old Cerridwen Felvennis, in at least one and possibly more volumes to come.

Readers should know that it will likely take them several chapters before they can even begin to keep straight in their mind not only who's who, but also who's what and who's on who's side. The names of the races and people are a jumble of letters and sounds that do not roll off the tongue or stick in the head easily, but once they do, the reader is in for a ride worth taking. (A dramatis personae would really be helpful, or a score card that lists the teams and players, as this is very much like watching a sport with which you are unfamiliar. You may not know what is going on exactly, but you can still enjoy it until you catch on).

There is very little down time in Bloodstained Skies. Yes, there are a few pages where nothing seems to happen, but then – bam – you flip the page and you are knee-deep in rebels, dictators, gunslingers, sentient beings whom even the author says look a bit like dragons. This is not a deep, dark novel with an agenda hidden between the lines. It is just good old-fashioned fun of the kind that used to be serialized in Analog or Amazing Stories.

"High above the crew’s heads hung the frosted glass sarcophaguses. Coils of cables surrounded them like a spider’s web that trapped unwary insects." This was my favorite sentence the science fiction/ action story of Cerridwen Felvennis. I discovered many more. I won't give away the ending but the anger and determination of the lead character clearly shows through:
"Cerridwen wanted to inhale or move her eyes, but she became motionless like a stone, and her heart stopped hammering. The other people walked past her, and the vehicles drove on the road at their usual pace. Everything appeared natural, except for her."
Alex Carter Emerson maintains a good balance between showing and telling. There are a lot of descriptions of aliens, the setting but I didn't feel like they showed first the plot. I appreciated that Emerson was equally descriptive of the character's emotions, particularly how their feelings twisted their faces or otherwise affected thier bodies. A good read if you love Star Wars and Dune.

For a first novel, Alex Carter Emerson has done a great job. I was particularly impressed by the author's ability to colour-in scenes with great descriptive detail, and to keep the reader engaged in a fast-moving, ever changing plot. I read one chapter or so each day, and looked forward to my next reading instalment, which speaks for itself. If Alex is considering revising this work to make a second edition, a fresh round of editing could lift it well into the four-star league.
