Courtney Peppernell is a true romantic.... and it turns out I just am not.
Her poems were pleasant and sweet. It was nice to have a window into what sounds like a really loving relationship between her and her wife. I thought the collection was well written and structured.
Despite all of this, I think I've learned that romantic poetry in general may just not be for me.
All together my review as like a series it was good 😌 it was definitely refreshing from what I have been reading so if was pretty nice to try out a new genre of books !
Courtney you had really opened my mind to poetry and I thank you for it !
Overall the rating for the whole series is a 3.75⭐️⭐️⭐️
Why I Listened to This: 1) My soul wanted to be fed poetry (Or rather I missed poetry I could relate to). 2) I was hoping for something soothing to help lull me to sleep (sleeping struggles during lockdown). 3) I was looking for doable (short) lengths.
Expectations: Something along the lines of the title, Pillow Thoughts; I was expecting comfy, yet possibly challenging to my perceptions.
In General: I did not want it to end! (>.<) I purposely slowed down the process as I was just trying to prolong the experience.
My Experience: It was fantastic to hear the author read her own work to you and talk about her writing, how she saw and experienced things, etc. Her voice is quite comforting!
Opinion: Even though I've finished the audiobook collection, I would adore it if I was gifted with any of her books. I suspect that reading her work (with my own inner dialogue) and seeing it there in print and processing it might wreck me on a whole other level.
Recommendation: These are really helpful if you're going through a tough time. There are sections (or chapters) for various scenarios of life and personhood. I'd say give this a go in any format, audio, print or digital. I feel like Courtney will have poems that can speak to almost anyone.
I love the way she infuses emotion into every word. Truly, every word matters. Sometime words are not poetic. But emotions are very raw. Just feel the emotion. And read it again and again sometime alone. Sometime with love one.
I had these three sitting on my shelves for years before I finally read them all this month. It's maybe 20% poetry, 80% rambling prose that felt more like first drafts that needed more tweaks to find a better flow. Not my cup of tea but certainly someone else's. I do still find this series a good 'research' into modern day poetry; I simply wished the spark that was in the poetry didn't fizzle out in between the rest that felt like repetitive retellings from previous pages and earlier books of the series.
Me gustó mucho porque eran poemas divididos en capítulos acordes a las personas a las que "se los dedicabas". Bueno, no sé si me explico. Me gustó mucho.
I fell in love with every word that was on every page. So insightful and emotional. I found myself relating to everything that was written based on my past love life and experience. This is the book that confirmed how much of a romantic I truly am. Would definitely recommend.
Picked up in an effort to read more poetry. Plus, check out the covers! Gorgeous. Unfortunately, the covers were my favorite part. I tried really hard to get into the mood of these, but they just felt trite and lacking substance. Not for me.
The first three collections of this series. If you read them individually they're all 3 stars but as a collection you'll notice how repetitive they get.
I feel like liking this poetry collection really depends on your own experiences and how much you can relate. Although its only small poems a handful of certain quotes leave a really deep impact on you and you cannot forgot them. Some of my favourites "I am in awe of even the way you walk and yet you walk right past me" ^ THIS. I don't even know why this is my favourite one it just is. I think about this so often its a problem istg. "People should fall in love more. Fall in love with the way your coffee swirls as soon as you pour the milk in. Fall in love with the look your dog gives you when you wake up..." ^ This entire poem in particular made me feel so not alone because I haven't seen anyone who enjoys these smallest things in life and get so excited and happy about these things. There's a whole lot more of these beautiful phrases that i can't stop thinking about. I teared up a little relating to these and also feeling the pain they've experienced. It's such a good collection.
And the contents oml is the best contents page I have ever seen. Its literally perfect to get to the poems that you need at that moment. The 'if you are in love' and 'if you need a reason to stay' are probably my favourite
Pillow Thoughts I is my favorite book of all time. My go to book to help cure or ease my depression or depressive episodes I may face. The first book where I felt like the author was speaking directly through me. Made me realize the power writing could have, made me realize mental illness is not as lonely as it tries to convince you it is. This is the most re read book of mine.
