When Wren Delacroix and Detective Caius Reilly investigate a new crime scene, they’re surprised to discover the killer has left a personal note, addressed directly to Reilly. As they unravel its cryptic message, they are led down a twisty road to reveal secrets about Reilly’s past and about his mother, a victim of the serial killer Mark Quentin Rhoads. This new killer means business. He’s vicious. He’s smart. He’s brutal. He’s playing a game with them. But only he knows the rules.
V. J. Chambers writes about being inexplicably attracted to the dangerously alluring. Her works span mundane settings and fantastic ones. She writes about serial killers, cult leaders, werewolves, witches, for-hire assassins, zombies, space pirates, and regular everyday people.
She lives in Shepherdstown, WV, with her boyfriend Aaron and their cat Isis.
In this book, Reilly's past comes out to play. Quite literally. Wren and Reilly are called to take over a case not only due to their success rate in closing cases but because a note left at the crime scene was specifically addressed to Det. Reilly.
What a twist-y story! David Song is revealed...and ALIVE! The way he so easily confessed leaves me to think there may be more at play there. Also, the twins being adopted...and the new mother mentioning the 'Lord'. I seriously hope nothing comes from that. But I guess I will have to read on to find out, as should you!
Still some random typos in the book which weren't too bad, but enough to make me stop and need to read the sentence over again.
Wren & Reilly are recovering from their last case when they are called to a murder scene. The killer has left a message for Reilly. He must delve into his past to figure out who is taunting him. He and Wren's relationship takes some interesting terms as Hawk still has a hold over Wren. Surprising revelations about David Song and the cult are explored as Wren tries to leave her past behind. The murderer strikes again putting Wren and Reilly in a life or death situation. This was supposed to be the end of the series but the author noted on the last page that due to popular demand it's continuing. It wasn't a cliff hanger though
Someone is sending cryptic messages to Detective Reilly at the newest crime scene. Why? There are secrets that are about to be revealed in Reilly's life, both personal and when he was younger. Interesting how things develop in this story, and what happens next. Also how the writer brings things from past stories into the current one. But is this the last of this series? I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book from Booksprout.
Wren and Cai are great together. This entire series kept me totally engaged. It started out as a freebie for the 1st book and I before I even finished it, I knew I wouldn't be able to NOT read the rest of the series ... limited income or not, I was smitten. I would recommend these books to anyone that likes an ongoing mystery that has a lot of twists and turns

This is the fifth book in the series and as with the others it’s kept me intrigued throughout. The author makes great use of their descriptive writing which makes this not for the faint of heart. I love this series, the plot and the characters are brilliant.
