Danger, loyalty and loving the enemy…

Book 4 in The Unmarriageable Series is now available! Read for Free with Kindle Unlimited!

Shunned by society and even by her own family after the treachery of her late husband, Isabelle de Renarde has long given up any thought of love or remarriage. But desperate loneliness drives her to make an assignation at the Hart Inn – which is where, inevitably, everything changes.

For the Hart is in turmoil once more, captured by a small group of French raiders led by the wildly reckless Captain Armand le Noir - who always succeeds in the end. Dazzled by Isabelle’s beauty, Armand regards her at first much like the task in hand – a distraction from his own pain. But the Hart seems to work its magic and inconvenient attraction gets in the way of both unwise assignation and the search for lost prisoners of war.

With the raiders only partially foiled, the adventure sweeps from the inn to a neighborhood ball and then to France itself.

Amidst the constant danger and the intensity of their growing love, Isabelle and Armand live on the edge of betraying each other or their own loyalties.

But someone is manipulating them, the true enemy is unclear, and in the end they must both risk everything to be together.

Mary Lancaster is a USA Today bestselling author of historical fiction and historical romance. She lives in Scotland with her husband, one of three grown-up kids, and a small dog with a big personality.

Her first literary love was historical fiction, a genre which she relishes mixing up with romance and adventure in her own writing. Several of her novels feature actual historical characters as diverse as Hungarian revolutionaries, medieval English outlaws, and a family of eternally rebellious royal Scots. To say nothing of Vlad the Impaler.
Her most recent books are light fun Regency romances, with occasional forays into Victorian mystery.

Mary Lancaster writes the best French and Russian heroes. One of the best things about the book is our hero, Armand who's not only French but also a commoner to boot. He's clever, resourceful and not afraid to take risks.Such a relief from the usual stuffy English dukes who populate the Regency romances these days.I've read enough books from the English perspective about the Napoleonic Wars. Armand provides a different perspective and it's interesting to see how his loyalty to France causes problems for his romance with our French émigré heroine. Isabelle is by no means a conventional heroine and the kindest thing about her is her affection for her young cousin. She's otherwise fickle and at the same time stubborn about the most trivial things.I don't get why she she made such a fuss about leaving England. It's not as if anyone would miss her. The romance is pretty much instant, but I like how the author gave them enough time and space to think about the consequences. The Hart Inn has such an interesting background. Always something or the other going on.

Well that was different: both the hero and the heroine of this regency romance are French. I think that's the first time in my reading life. The usual regency romance is about England and English.
Isabelle is a French emigre and a widow. Her parents, French aristocrats, fled from the revolution in France when she was three. She grew up in England and she considers England her home.
Her beloved, Armand, is a loyal French officer. They first meet when he and his men sailed to England to help a group of escaped French prisoners of war get back to France. Mayhem ensued. Guns, swords, smugglers, kidnappings, spies - it is all intertwined in this story of love and intrigue. The action takes place first in England, and then in France.
The pacing is furious, the tension high throughout the novel, and the characters original. They might be a bit overly emotional and dramatic for my taste, but then they are both French. Maybe that's how their Gaelic temperaments manifest. Nevertheless, I enjoyed their story.

The Broken Heart, Book 4 of the Unmarriageable series, was about Isabelle de Renarde, a distant cousin to Mrs. Longstone, the mother-in-law to the late Lord Verne, and Captain Armand le Noir the leader of a small group of French raiders who were searching for lost prisoners of war.

The former lover of the current Lord Verne, and the widow of the traitorous late Mr. Pierre de Renarde, Isabelle was on her way to the Hart Inn for a fling with Sir Maurice Ashton, a potential new lover. Though she chose not to follow through with the tryst, there was an uproar that still threw her into the company of Sir Ashton. Captain Le Noir and some of his search party showed up, a fight ensued, and all of the English citizens, including the owners of Hart Inn, became the captives of Le Noir while he continued searching for his people.
When all was said and done, le Noir and some of his men managed to escape using Isabelle and Mr. Villan, the innkeeper, as hostages, although they were released once they were safely away from the British soldiers who arrived to capture them.
What bothered me the most, I suppose, was that I didn't like Isabelle's character when she appeared in Book 2 of the series. She was an utterly detestable woman in that story, constantly trying to separate Lord Verne and Cecily so she could continue her affair with him...even though she was already married. I didn't think she deserved her own story. But then, in this book, Isabelle was determined to pay a visit to her former lover, Lord Verne, and his new wife. She wasn't certain if her feelings for him were over or not. Why would the author do this? Isabelle should have left Patrick and Cecily alone. She should not have tried to develop a friendship with them. That is an awkward situation, to be friends with an ex and his/her new love.
This book made no sense. It should not have been included in the series. Armand, although a very likable and well-developed character, was never part of any of the other books and Isabelle did not deserve to be the Heroine of her own story. It was totally misplaced and the author misjudged in writing it. If the author had to write a story about Armand, she should have given him a different Heroine to fall in love with, for he deserved better than Isabelle.
Definitely not a five-star worthy book as I didn't see why it was even part of the series. Its only connection, other than the witch (I'm being nice here) Isabelle, was the Hart Inn. The rest just didn't fit. I hope Isabelle is not in the next book.

Isabelle de Renarde's husband was a traitor. Now a widow, she has come to the Hart Inn for a tryst with Sir Maurice Ashton. The dashing Captain Armand de Noir descends upon the inn while looking for escaped French prisoners, in order to take them back to France. Unfairly ostracized because of her dead husband, the melancholy and directionless Isabelle's loneliness drove her to arrange a tryst at the inn with a man she didn't even like. In the melee that followed, she intervened to save Armand, while at the same time trying to help the English soldiers capture him. She was torn between attraction and duty. Armand was dazzled by her and tried to convince her to go with him to France, where she was born, but had left at the age of two.

It takes some manipulation by Lord Torbridge, a character from previous books, to get Isabelle to go to France on a mission to recover a shipwrecked and wounded British soldier and his wife. While in France, she reconnects with Armand, and together they navigate the dangerous recovery mission.

Book 4 has its share of intrigue and danger, but the love story of its dashing hero and strong, though vulnerable, heroine is satisfying to read. I wish that were some kind of list of families and characters described on Mary Lancaster's website, because so many characters from other books pop up. Even if I've previously read them, I don't always remember their roles, and it does make a difference if you know their back stories. 4.2 stars

The Broken Heart by Mary Lancaster is an intriguing read, bull of betrayal and angst. Isabelle is the widow of a traitor and everyone knows it, making her life less than enjoyable. She is currently sitting in a private room in an inn waiting for an assignation with a man she doesn't even like. All of a sudden a group of men takes over the inn, looking for some escaped prisoners whom they hoped to take home. Things get complicated. Isabelle is instantly attracted to their leader, Captain Armand le Noir, and tries to help while saving the innocents they have detained in the inn. Before the night is over, she is fully in love, as is Armand. But it is not meant to be. Without his prisoners, her and his men leave.

If you are looking for an unlikely happily-ever-after, this is the book for you. Through the ins and outs of the story, both Isabelle and Armand have no belief that they will ever see one another again, with praying to be reunited. There is a good plot with plenty of intrigue and even a vindictive woman. It was an entertaining read with plenty of love to go around. I recommend it.

I received a free ARC of the Broken Heart from Dragonblade. All opinions and interpretations contained herein are solely my own.

Terrific romance AND mystery

This is a wonderful story that is mystery and romance wrapped up together. Isabelle de Renarde is a rather notorious widow, not for her own actions, but her deceased husband was a traitor to England. Many of her former “friends” and family have turned their backs on her and her loneliness has lead her to plan a clandestine meeting with a man at an out of town inn simply for the sake of company.
But her plans go awry when french Captain Armand leNoir and his cohorts arrive unexpectedly looking to escort a few french prisoners back to their own shores. It is this conflict that brings Isabelle, once a french emigre as a child whose family settled in England after escaping the revolution in their homeland, and Armand the french captain who seems to have no care for his own safety.
The two have in instant attraction but it is deeper than the physical. They both have pasts that enable them to have empathy for the other’s situations. The two are drawn into a web of intrigue, spying, and danger before the tale ends and it is definitely a page turner!
I loved the story of these two characters and the world they navigated to find true happiness with each other. I highly recommend it.

I love when a book grips me and guides you on an heart sighing journey filled with unexpected twists that holds your full attention to the very end and The Broken Heart does just that! Mary Lancaster has written a story woven from beginning to end with threads of intrigue, espionage, smugglers and love. She's filled this story with characters that come off the pages and pulled you into their tale, a story that is well-written, strong plot and great dialogue, with setting descriptions and action sequences are wonderfully vivid which brings this read together perfectly. Isabelle arrives at the Hart Inn for a assignation but before she can decide if this is what she wants she meets Armand a devil-may-care French Raider. As they embark on a dangerous adventures their emotions and feelings escalate in this heart-stoping romance filled with drama, deciet, jealousy, uncertainties, deception and with forces in the background trying to manipulate them. It is so enjoyable to read stories that are all truly individual to the characters and revisiting characters from the other novels.  Mary has outdone herself with this novel that is a must read!

💋💋

Oh! this book is so good.
Wait till you meet Armand (sigh)
That guy has just become my new dream.

I love to read anything by Mary , this series is just as good and just as riveting as anything she’s written before . Totally addictive and satisfying.

Isabelle a has starred in some of the other books in the series, the poor woman has had no piece, a husband who was a traitor. A lover who she adored but he married another . Abandoned by her family, what’s left of them .
She deserves happiness and a man who loves her.

Enter Armand , a French smuggler/ spy who’s after saving imprisoned fellow spy’s from English soil .

The two fairly spark Upon meeting and their chemistry melts the pages upon reading.
Sexual tension between them is the order of the day, it seems to ooze from every conversation.
Making for Excellent banter from the two .

From English inns ,to Ballroom liaisons , to French shores this book never stops and always entertains .

A wonderful Five Stars

Armand is a darling but I wish he talked more about his dead wife and son. Basically I wish he had been more heartbroken.

I liked Isabelle a lot more here than I expected to. But once again, I cannot get past her affair with Verne and the fact that Cecily wants to be besties with her. There is once again a line where Verne says "You are beautiful and young and charming...and anyone man would have you" to her in front of Cecily. And I just can't!!

Also, Isabelle keeps thinking about how she cared more about Verne than he did for her. And I was just not convinced that she loved Armand more.

ps: Isabelle's character and this romance would have worked a lot better sans the affair with Verne. A heartbroken wife, jaded with love and life, then a widow of a traitor who is shunned by everyone and who falls in love with a spy. And Verne already had another issue. I would have liked his romance with Cecily a lot better too if he had never been with Isabelle.

Isabel has been basically shined by society because her dead husband was branded a traitor. Being lonely since her husbands death she agrees to meet an acquaintance at an inn. Unsure if she can go through with it she gets her rooms for the night and when the inn is captured by a group of French raiders Isabels new adventure begins. Captain Armand Le Noir has been forced to capture hostages at the inn where he believes his captured men are being hidden. Feisty Isabel is very outspoken and Captain Armand is becoming more attracted to her the more time he spends with her. Isabel was resigned to the fact that she would never be married and was going to settle for an assignation to try to fill a void until she met Armand whom she would never be able to marry. I really enjoyed reading this book, it was a fun story and loved both characters.

Isabelle de Renarde is a French emigre who came to England as a small child.  That she considers England as her home has not helped her because her husband was a traitor.  Since his death she is trying to find work as a governess and regain a life for herself.

Captain Armand le Noir is a French army officer in England to rescue escaped prisoners of war.  The inn near the smugglers cove will turn out to be a turning point in both their lives.

Will either of them be able to give up their chosen country in war time,  if so which one???

An exciting story full of spies and danger.  Fabulous characters that are torn between honour and love.

I loved it.

Another visit to the Hart Inn where anything can happen and often does! This time with Isabelle and Captain Armand. Isabelle is a French emigre but has lived in England since she was a very small child. But her late husband was a traitor and she has had a hard time getting work and being lonely.
She meets Armand at the Inn, where he has been trying to rescue escaped prisoners of war. Their lives intersect and an attraction blooms, but there is more at stake that will make their journey not very smooth.
Mary Lancaster, who is one of my favorite authors always creates tales of the heart and this one is full of spies, danger and intrigue that kept me enchanted until the end. Another great addition to this series!!

Isabelle de Renarde is a French emigre but has lived in England since she was a very small child. Her husband was killed because he was a traitor to his adoptive country. She’s now a widow headed back to the Hart Inn to meet someone. She ends up meeting a wickedly handsome Captain Armand le Noir who trying to rescue lost prisoners of war. Smugglers, soldiers and nobles come the Hart Inn where lives interact and attractions grow and love blooms. A captivating adventure for Isabelle and Armand filled with mystery and danger as their attraction grows. An excellent story I loved and I voluntarily wrote a review.

Love after a traitor

Isabelle was married to a traitor! Armand is the Hart Inn to bring prisoners back to France. Isabelle was there to meet a prospective lover but Armand arrives and she is persuaded otherwise. Her supposed lover blamed to anyone in hearing distance about their supposed liasion! Armand escapes but later returns! There seemed to be no way that love could be blossom! Midnight trips to France and did Isabelle get married when she returns to France? Mystery intrigue and a jealous woman also thrown in the mix! This was another book that is a page turner and what I call unputdownable!!

I've avoided this book for a while, because, while I adored every book in this series, I REALLY didn't like Isabelle's character in the previous books.

MARY I AM SO SORRY FOR DOUBTING YOU!

I think this has almost become my favourite in the series. It has EVERYTHING I want in a historical romance -great, complex MCs, a plot that is intriguing enough and drives the book and the romance forward - and atop of that SPIES and intrigue and an ending that you see coming, but still feels fresh and unexpected!

I really enjoyed the change in setting as well as a slew of new, interesting characters.

Can't wait to read the next one, but I'll definitely be rereading this one soon.

In France, they speak French

This is the first of Ms Lancaster’s books that I have read that takes place mainly in France. It makes it feel different. Widow and widower find true love. Well written.
One thing, the mayor gets confused and thinks the heroine is referring to him when she uses the word you when she is referring to him and the entire town. This is a common mistake in English because we do not have a plural ‘you.’ But, guess what, they weren’t speaking English! Oops!

5 STARS INTERESTING INTRIQUE GREAT HISTORICAL ROMANCE DRAMA

Mary Lancaster gets 5 STARS for Book 4 in this wonderful exciting & different series from her other ones: The Unmarriageable Series Book 4. Action & excitement from the beginning with this tale about a French woman who had ended up in England in her young years before 5 years old during the time of the French & English War & Bonepart.

There is quite a bit concerning smuggling between the two countries also.

Two broken Hearts meet at the Hart

Book 4 doesn’t disappoint. The Hart Inn draws you inside to the people gathered there and you or sucked in to the magic. Mystery, spies and love! Wow, what an amazing adventure Isabelle and Armond had over two countries. A forever love with a happy ending and many thanks to the Hart Inn for bringing them together.

Another entertaining entry in the Unmarriageable series. The MC are both easy to like, but I need to add that Armand is particularly adorable. It's got to be hard to write a swashbuckling hero who's simultaneously a little crazy, hot, and genuinely funny, but Mary Lancaster has nailed it with Armand. Solid four stars. ****

The first third of the book made me think it was going to be one of my favourites. Unfortunately the middle dragged and I felt the ending was very anti-climactic. I liked the main characters but am not sure if I'm very interested in the continuation of another of the characters in the next book in the series.

🤔

Sorry this one didn’t do it for me. It was well written. It gave the time a different perspective. It brought the results of war to a more personal level, including the actual effects on individuals and families.
I just wasn’t as engaged as I have been in the past. I wasn’t feeling the h, maybe because of her previous appearances in the prior books. While one gives a more personal perspective of her, I still didn’t feel her and subsequently, not the story. 🤷🏾‍♀️

Exciting story

This is a story that doesn't get old. It is hard being in war no matter what country you are from. I had 2 children with my husband but he had leave to go to sea and my son was 4 months old before my husband saw him.

Greater depth

Than the previous books in the series. Also, not the usual trope of the innocent but clever girl and the man with more experience and a certain amount of darkness. I was actually moved at the end and that’s hard to do.
