Usia mensamar ketentuan,
Lorong-lorong menjadi tua,
Diulangi oleh ingatan sisa,
Bangsa-bangsa jadi biasa.
Ku cari juga kelainan,
dari detik tengah usia,
tetapi yang tiba rupa biasa,
Yang berkerlip hanya garis beza,
atau condong cara.
- Condong Cara by Muhammad Haji Salleh (Kalau, atau dan Maka)

A truly wonderful, a mix of political, spiritual, nature, travel and just amazing poetry from Muhammad Haji Salleh’s previous work. Despite being a renowned literary scholar and National Laureate in Malaysia, its hard to admit that this is my first time reading his work. I honestly dont know how to write my review on this one as it it is indescribable. Particularly because he wrote his poems so well and the topics are so diverse that within this collection - that we as readers felt that we aren’t just reading poems. We are following along in his journey. For the first part which is titled ‘Jurnal Eropah’ - its like travelogue within the poetry. The acute observation as foreigner living in a foreign land was stamped all over his prose in this section. For example, when he wrote about fall season in Leiden Netherland (1994) : “Musim gugur melayang ke atas daun
tangkainya terpatah oleh panas rapuh,
akhirnya tergelincir di ubanku.
Hujungnya kuning seperti Nestapa,
Diberatkan oleh titik halus kabus,
Kuning mencair jadi kenangan.
On ‘Watak Tenggara’, his poems started to become a bit gloomy. Its not a bad thing (at least for me as i love reading despressive stuff) as he contemplated on the existence, loss, exile and even few reflection on reality of living for the working class in the country he visited. In ‘Penunggu’, he wrote about a man that frequented to the government office waiting for his matter to be settled but was told to wait few times unless he can give bribe.
“Sekali terbayang penyelesaiannya,
hanya rupiah yang dapat membeli waktu,
dan untuknya bukan satu penyelesai,
dia tidak punya wang,
dan setelah berhari menunggu,
dia tidak lagi punya waktu.”
‘Sajak Sejarah Melayu’ demonstrated how he took apart many pieces of Malay History and rewrote them in the form of poetry. The fall of Melaka were penned in ‘Ceritera yang Ketiga Puluh Empat’ : “Telah lama alah Melaka ini,
Feringgu Hanga Pemecah Terakhir,
Pada Negara yang diretakkan,
Oleh Biaperindan orang-orang besarnya,
Bukit Istana diusung ke parit oleh Zalimnya
Yang tak tertebus pada tujuh keturunan”. The poem illustrate that portuguese might be one of the factors why Malacca Glory ended but internal crisis is the biggest contributor to it. There are other chapters that are equally good but i might not be able to review them all as I dont want to sound repetitive. Overall, What a unique style and a great pleasure to read this as well. Ultimately, i have to buy more MHS works after finishing this one.
