They are coming. Find the Goliath or be destroyed.
The chilling words are the first thing Mitchell hears after an assassin’s bullet nearly ends his life. He tries to ignore them, convinced the voice in his head is a side-effect of his injuries.
It isn’t.
The warning is only the beginning. A glimpse into a struggle against an enemy older than time.
An enemy that’s very real and much closer than he ever imagined.
An enemy that will do whatever it takes to keep him from finding the centuries-lost starship and ending not only the fight but their very existence.
Narrowly escaping capture, Mitchell falls into the hands of the Riggers — a ragtag crew of black-ops commandos who patrol the outer reaches of the galaxy. Guided by a captain with a reputation for murder, they’re dangerous, immoral, and possibly insane.
They may also be humanity’s last hope for survival in a war that has raged beyond eternity.

I was really into the plot... I was really not into the poor female representation though.
I strongly considered toughing it out. I was into the story and appreciated having a fast, action-packed read on my hands and then would be immediately taken out of it for a deep sigh and eye roll at the casual misogyny.
Listen, it's not blatant by any means. It's covert and subtly indicates an inability to create nuanced female characters.
First, why does every female in this story have to be super model hot? There's a subtle difference between describing someone's physical attributes (blonde, tall, lean, etc.) and the narrator letting you know indisputably that they're hot. If your story centers around military women and trophy wives of important men, just describe them as "fit" or "lean" or whatever. I don't need to know that they're all sexy.
Second, what is with the narrator and panties? It's unnecessary. It comes up when a young (specifically 19 or 20 young) woman walks up to Mitch and gets his autograph and says that she masturbates to him. I don't have a problem with a young woman expressing her sexuality in a healthy way. I have a problem with the fact that we need to make it VERY CLEAR how young she is (because it wouldn't be hot if an older woman said that) and we need to emphasize that her shirt barely covers her breasts and she's possibly just wearing panties as shorts.
Also, with Kathy: Kathy takes a run every morning before her squad wakes up. It was also apparently important to note that Kathy does not merely put sweatpants on but "over her panties". At the risk of sharing intimate secrets over the internet, I too put pants on over some sort of underwear. I really don't understand why it's necessary to say that your sweatpants go over your underwear. They usually do. The only reason to emphasize this is for the visual image in our head not to be of a young woman getting ready in the morning but specifically in a young woman in sexy panties putting pants on and covering them up.
I find it interesting as well that in the future, almost every important man is with a woman at least a decade younger in him. This is made clear in the gala. In and of itself, not a problem but it ticked me off that the first most important thing about a woman is how hot she is and the second most is how young she is.
Final nail in the coffin of casual misogyny: Mitch gets in trouble for allegedly raping a woman. It's clear to us, the readers, that he did nothing of the sort. However, rape and sexual assault are disturbingly common for many women. With report rates being low and many perpetrators running free, you're getting into dangerous territory by making a false rape accusation being a major plot point. I think one could, but it needs to be done carefully and respectfully and if you can't do that, please don't even touch the topic. I'm not opposed to sexual assault being a key point of a narrative, but this compounded with all the other points mentioned was just too much.
I struggled to finish this series as it quickly devolved into a never ending string of impossible situations always followed by a miraculous last minute save. The only reason I powered through was that I wanted to see if the author ever strayed from the repetitive story line. He didn’t. I can’t recommend these books. Spend your time with another book - any book. I’ll even save you hours of boring reading. Of course, the hero wins and gets the girl in the end, against all odds. Again and again. This story could easily have been told in 2/3 fewer words, but I guess the author thought he was being paid by the word; not quality of story.
This series combines AI and time travel in an amazing, entertaining and thought provoking way. M.R. Forbes continues to impress with a level of creativity and attention to detail that kept me wanting to read more and more. Thank you once again!
The whole time travel thing was not well-explained and just took too much away from the story. Also, I never could embrace the characters...I never learned to care about them. Rather disappointed in this set because I have enjoyed his writing in the past.
The story has great potential and some great moments. But, this one felt rushed. I honestly bailed before the end (which I never do) because the tedium just wasn't worth it.
The first one was free and so interesting I bought the whole set. Rarely have I read a series from start to finish. Most become redundant in the action and unremarkable in the plot. This series was different and exciting and fresh in every volume. The constant switch between the present and future and past meant having to stay engaged the while time. That was not hard to do. Although the character names were the same in most volumes their personalities changed as the story navigated through the different time frames. The protagonists fought each other using various means in each story and just when you thought it was over the author found a crafty way to move the story forward. Look forward to seeing what the author does in his next storylines.
3.75 stars for the series overall. When I started reading this box set, I had every intention of leaving a review for every book, but I found myself partway through book 3 before I even realized it. I don't know how much of that is because it was a fast-paced, non-stop action story, and how much was that there was very little in the way of clearly marking the end of one book and the beginning of the next. Trying to avoid spoilers in my review, I'll say that many times I felt portions of the books were filler that went over ideas and events that had already been covered before. I know that that idea is part of the plot, but to cover it over and over again, kind of slowed things down for me. Your experience may vary. Many of the characters were extremely well written and to watch them evolve over the course of the books was satisfying. Mitch, the main character, eventually got there. When he did, it was in a big way. Word of warning, there are a number of "unsavory" characters in the cast. Redemption really isn't one of their mission objectives, but they are there when it counts. There are a few scenes scattered throughout the series that may be triggering. This is not to say they should be skipped, in my opinion, if possible. While uncomfortable to read, they are integral to conveying who certain characters are on a base level. Something I personally applaud is the fact that so many of the secondary (important) characters that surround Mitch are strong, intelligent, and plain simple badass women. There are a couple of airheads here and there, but they are not important to the story beyond moving the plot forward. The battle scenes seem to be well written. Strangely, while I am a fan of military Sci-Fi, reading details of a battle does not always bring me closer to the story. I just can't follow the action well. Perhaps due to my dyslexia?
***********************Small spoiler alert**************************************** The central theme of the time recursions had me confused for quite a while. I'm hesitant to say it was due to the author's ability to write. As mentioned earlier, I am dyslexic, so that may have had a lot to do with it. It does seem to be a bit of a complicated idea. Even after finishing the series, I'm not sure I ever fully understood it completely. It didn't stop me from enjoying the story overall. *****************************************************************************
So, while I had a few issues with minor details, I am more than happy to recommend M.R. Forbes' War Eternal series. It was a long read, and chock full of rich and developed characters that you will either love, or love to hate..
This series started with such promise, such gusto and such a unique idea, I was hooked. But by the 5th book, it was dragging, by the 6th book, the story was getting old and not very interesting and by the final 7th book, I just wanted it to end and to be honest, the ending was just that, nothing fantastic, just a gradual climax and then.. poof!! all done. So I want to summarise my reaction to the 7 volumes in this one review.
Book 1 - Funny, Gripping, adventurous and seriously entertaining. Always action and always on the edge of your seat Book 2 - As good as the first novel, maintains the pace and excitement and very entertaining. Book 3 - Introduces a new character, looses some of the gripping entertainment, but good storytelling , some surprises and a good read Book 4 - So things are coming to a head, what we hoped was the final climax to end the story and then, wham.. no...we are thrown to Book 5. I enjoyed book 4 and it could have been a great conclusion to the story, but I understand there was still much left to do in the Author's mind so away we went. Book 5 - This started confusing, then became clearer some way into the story but lacked the gripping entertainment, surprises and gut wrenching action of the previous books. We had invested so much emotion and time in the characters of the first 4 books and then, blam, its all gone. I found the story pretty predictable and the pace was much slower than previous and I just didn't have the emotional investment in the story without all my favorite characters. Book 6- The story is getting old now and nothing new is really happening, just going back to old acquaintances. The author tries to make it interesting by throwing a few surprises in, but these are too few and overall I found the pace too slow. Book 7- yeah, just wanted the story to end now, my original dream of this series having some fantastic conclusion, some mind bending intricate plot woven in that all becomes clear at the end was torn to shreds. This book was the slowest and dreariest of them all and the conclusion was as boring as I expected it to be. Don't expect any twist or last minute story turned on its head here. Its just a grunt going about his business shooting stuff and completing the battle.
So after all that, I can only give it 3 stars. The author failed to maintain the great premise he started with and , quite frankly, seems to have run out of ideas by book 5.
The premise of the book – repeated reruns of a universe with some individuals able to recall and debug past lives – is intriguing. I explore a similar theme in my novel, The Day it Rained Forever (to the reviewer who pointed out I’m not Ray Bradbury, thanks but I had actually noticed) if in a much less ambitious form.
The notion of a sentient AI that outgrows its maker is not novel but played well.
A detail though that grates: the notion that such an AI is controlled by source code that can be edited. A small fraction of software is distributed in source code and the odds, even if this happened, of the language being intelligible to someone who hadn't seen it before or after centuries of development is beyond implausible. The way any reasonably scalable AI is likely to work is almost certainly heavily data-driven rather than code-driven.
Even so I would rate it at least a 4 based on keeping my attention through 7 volumes but the final issue that drops the score: dire need of competent editing. There is a ludicrous number of typos and disentangling the intermingling of like personalities and spacecraft from different timelines isn't helped by this sort of distraction. In the final detail about the author, we are told he’s from the “west cost”. In my own self-published novels, I have friends and family read them; I paid for an editor for The Superpower because I wanted to rush it out (it has a passing similarity to events of the US 2020 election).
So: dear author, find friends who nitpick your writing if you don't want to pay for editing. And befriend a computer scientist if you want to factionalize AI.
They're aspects of this series that were well gone. Twists which I never saw coming. I did enjoy discovering the curve balls even with all the filler which was added along with it. This is a hero story. A story where the main protagonist, from luck or skill, wins in some way. Now some of the fighting/ battles were enjoyable to read but how he wins, I was scratching my head. I enjoyed the concept, some of the action was well done. I had no issue with the writing, even with a few clear mistakes. And I got through all 7 with only some skipped chapters (lost interest in the plot) The bad, for me, was the main character's bad trait was he liked to sleep with everyone. A fact that saw him bedding multiple partners throughout the series but none went anywhere. He shows no emotion to them and when one dies, he just shrugges it off and keeps going unaffected. I also disliked that no one questioned the ai and their judgment. Clearly, it's defective by some of the stuff Origin does in the early books, but Michelle goes alone unquestioning.
The author certainly knows how to create a nice universe and is not afraid of diving into some more complex lines of thinking.
Mitchell, the protagonist, is facing off against an ever evolving AI that will and has many times over destroyed all of humankind. At some point, this does get to be a bit repetitive, but you do really want to find out what happens next.
The ending has to be one of the weaker parts and I could have lived with an alternate less happy version of it for sure. Likely less confusing than what is in place now.
This will suck you in and have you hope, curse, laugh and just fight along the whole way. The quiet moments will build up your hopes to see these completely destroyed again.
Thank you M.R. Forbes for a piece of your mind and fantasy
I became hooked on hard science fiction starting with The Last Planet (mental telepathy) by Andre Norton in 5th or 6th grade. Recently read about a National Geographic writer/photographer who stumbled across a tribe in the Amazon jungle 50-60 years ago that he claimed were telepathic and talked with each other in what they called the "other language". Although he couldn't talk in the "other language" to the tribe members he could with the leader of the tribe. I am sure you can google it.
Greatly enjoyed the ever evolving AI, and the "recursion" concept. Would have liked to have had a page with the "family tree" to help keep track of the main characters.
If you've never played three dimensional tic-tac-toe with 9 surfaces and 729 possible locations, you may have some difficulty comprehending the circular nature of time as it repeats itself through multiple iterations. Don't worry about it. Somewhere between the first iteration and the second, your vision starts to clear. This is one heck of a series. Adventure enough to satisfy anyone, some love (but no sex scenes). Your best bud; your mom and your dad; your husband or wife; your children; your parents; your brothers and sisters, every possible relationship.
The kind of love you find in a big family. The kind that let's you argue among yourselves, but heaven help the scumbag that tries to hurt one of your family.
Far Out, Man!😵🚀💫 Military sci-fi💥💫🔫🗡 With time travel⏳ , AI, and paranormal elements. The 1st books were pretty straightforward military sci-fi then the author got into Time travel⏳ Or reincarnation of the main characters, Mitchell🐺💪🔫🗡 and Katherine💃🔫🗡. The enemy👺 in this series is Watson, A seemingly omnipotent being who is everywhere and nowhere at once, manipulating humans at will and destroying them whenever and wherever he wants to. But for some reason he just can't seem to get his hands on Mitchell🐺💪🔫🗡, his arch enemy. So various battles go on throughout the series and through time⏳ as Watson👺 attempts to destroy Mitchell🐺💪🔫🗡 and Mitchell attempts to destroy Watson👺. The jumping around in time ⏳ is confusing.
I got this ebook series📚 from Amazon with Kindle Unlimited.

This series is comprised of seven books. I do not consider them to be books as much as episodes in a long book. I have only completed book 5 so far. I think I need a break.
The "Eternal War" reads a bit like the Eternal Book. It just seems to go on and on. There is much action and plot twists, but it is slightly repetitive in a "Groundhog Day" sort of way. Book 5 would appear to have been intended to be the ending, but there are still 2 more episodes. I am going to take a short break in this read. Just feeling a bit repetitive.
Well, I did not take that long of a break. Books #6 and #7 read a bit more like completed books. Forbes has really ramped up the action sequences. This has decreased the repetition and introduced some nice plot twists. I am not sure I like the approach to how the time recursions come about, but it is an approach I had not seen before.
I found the final ending at book #7 to seem just a tad too unexplained. Not that I was looking for a longer explanation. Overall I really liked the books, but I could have gotten by with a condensed version of books 1-5.
So many modern sci-fi novels are high on action but low on plot. This series has plenty of both. The boxed set includes seven books. The story carries solidly through each taking the reader on an adventure spanning time and space and asking key moral questions about artificial intelligences and the potential power and weaknesses of machine intelligence. Not only is this a story of good versus bad, but it is a story of logic versus emotion and love versus hate.
This is, by far, the craziest series of books I’ve ever read! Time travel. A war against a malevolent AI that’s been going forever. One man who keeps getting close to winning, only to lose every time and so much that, oh, somewhere in Book 3, I was ready to stop fighting the war, too.
Amazing, mind-numbing action. Slow. Steady. You’ll need to breathe this way to get through all seven book and to an end that even Watson didn’t see coming.
From start to finish this series keeps throwing new ways for the enemy - an evil AI seeking total domination over mankind, to always have one more trick to remain undefeated. Across the universe and across time Mitchell Williams is driven, determined and unstoppable in his battle to save mankind from annihilation. Great characters and a twisting plot will keep you engaged for hours.
Do you like action and adventure ? Do you like suspense and mystery ?You'll get all that and more as you turn page after page of the seven novels in this box set. Time is both friend and enemy to the main character, Mitchell, as he battles the main villain, Watson throughout future past in a two steps forward one step back scenario between confrontations . Who wins and who looses ? You'll have to read every page to find out, enjoy a very good read.
Thoroughly enjoyable read with lots going on all the time.
Enjoyed the entire series.Excellent characters both good and Machiavellian. Fortunately for me, the prose created a movie in my head. If you enjoy space battles and interesting aliens as well as new technologies, it is a winner!
Massive adventure in reading, seven books all together in an amazing spiral of intellectual combat, as well as a generous amount of space combat. The complete series had a good flow that kept my mind engrossed through all seven of these books. This was an immense pleasure to read !
Amazing series I simply could not stop reading, I lost many days and nights submerged in this awesome series a must read for all mike mason
One of the most wonderful and amazing series I've read I lost myself submerged in this wonderful captivating authors work bravo a must read for all believe me. Mr michael mason
This story should be a movie or a TV series! This set of ebooks has everything, suspense, life or death battles in space and land - just not planet Earth! Characters are well developed and each has an interesting personality. Reading this set was easy and surprisingly went quickly!
I am having a hard time to express just how much I have enjoyed these seven fantastic books. I was hooked from the first chapter. My only egret is that I have finished it. What a work of art. Simply one of the best series I have had the pleasure to read. I loved it, thank you Mr Forbes.
I wasted too much time trying to shut my Brain off enough to read this piece of crap. Don't like knowing that I got sucked in to buying this trash long enough ago that I can no longer return for a refund. This book is badly written & unsuitable for any audience of any age.
I tried to like this series I really did but at the 31% mark just couldn't take it. The characters, if you can keep them straight, are boring, one dimensional stuck within a convoluted timeline which I'm sure made perfect sense to the author if not the audience. No spoilers or reason to say more I'll just leave you with don't waste your time.
I have not found a book I didn’t like from mr forbes.
Every book I’ve picked up by this author I’ve loved. I love how the story goes in this one it gives you space travel action, plus tossing in time travel. You never know what’s around the corner, he always will keep you guessing.
It took some time but I finished 7 books of War Eternal. There some moments when I thought I had enough but every time I picked it up again. A real rollercoaster with plenty of nice, interesting and worthwhile changes and other directions in which the story kept developing. I thoroughly enjoyed reading War Eternal.
This series is an amazingly cool adventure to partake in. I wish there was a show for this. With the right actors it would be absolutely amazing to see. The writing is good and descriptive. It’s a thrilling and fun story that leaves you repeatedly on the edge of your seat wanting to read more. Definitely 18+
The last two books spoiled this series for me. It could have been easily ended in the fifth book if the author had wanted but was dragged over another two books with a massive anticlimactic confusion filled ending.
