Libby Fischer Hellmann left a career in broadcast news in Washington, DC and moved to Chicago a long time ago, where she, naturally, began to write gritty crime fiction. She soon began writing historical fiction as well. Eighteen novels and twenty-five short stories later, she claims they’ll take her out of the Windy City feet first. She has been nominated for many awards in the mystery writing community and has even won a few. Her newest work is MAX'S WAR, her 6th historical saga. MAX, set before and during WW2, It will be released in April, 2024.
Libby began her career as an assistant film editor for NBC News in New York before moving back to DC to work with Robin McNeil and Jim Lehrer at N-PACT, the public affairs production arm of PBS. Retrained as an assistant director when Watergate broke, Libby helped produce PBS’s night-time broadcast of the hearings. She went on to work for public relations firm Burson-Marsteller in Chicago in 1978, where she stayed until she left to found Fischer Hellmann Communications in 1985.
Originally from Washington, D.C.—where, she says, “When you’re sitting around the dinner table gossiping about the neighbors, you’re talking politics”—Libby earned a Masters Degree in Film Production from New York University and a BA in History from the University of Pennsylvania. In addition to writing, Libby writes and produces videos, and conducts speaker training programs in platform speaking, presentation skills, media training and crisis communications.
Libby’s best-selling novels have won widespread acclaim since her first novel, AN EYE FOR MURDER, which was nominated for several awards and described by Publisher’s Weekly as “a masterful blend of politics, history, and suspense”.
Libby is known for her portrayal of strong female characters. EYE introduced Ellie Foreman, a video producer and single mother who went on to star in five more novels in a series described by Libby as “a cross between Desperate Housewives and 24.”
Libby’s second series, also six novels now, follows Chicago PI Georgia Davis, a no-nonsense hard-boiled detective operating in the Northern suburbs and beyond.
In addition to her popular series, Libby has also written five standalone thrillers in diverse settings and historical periods that demonstrate her versatility as a writer. Readers will meet young activists during the late Sixties, a young American woman who marries and moves to Tehran, three women forced to make dire choices during WW2, and a female Mafia boss who chases power at the expense of love. And in A BEND IN THE RIVER, she takes a break from her thrillers to write an award-winning novel of two Vietnamese sisters trying to survive the Vietnam war. MAX is the upcoming 6th addition to the loosely-linked series she calls her "Revolution Sagas."
I did not find any connection to the main character or the author's writing style. The story itself was interesting but presented in such an awkward and tedious manner, that I found myself trailing off after a few pages. Nothing in the story compelled me to read just one more page. After feeling relief with each chapter being over, I called it quits.
As I read these stories I was thinking that, while they involved more violence than I have known, the lives lived are not unlike mine and other people I know. Not fully realizing the parental love we hoped for. Not understanding the setbacks that occurred at a young age. Not knowing ourselves as well as we'd like. While these books are fiction we have all "been there" a time or two ourselves. Great writing, riveting scenarios, masterful character development-all of this makes for great reading.
I had heard about this author for years but this was my first time trying one of her books. Unfortunately, it will be my last. As I was reading, I began wondering if there was an earlier book in this series but booksinorder.com said no. There were characters with no background and previous actions with no explanation. Yet there was SO much background on the many plots she was trying to weave together that I was bogged down at every turn. Too bad because this was Book 1 of a free set of four Gloria Davis novels and the other three will remain unread.
Got this 4 book set from a bargain offer on Kindle. Wow, am I glad I did! The writing is taut and the plots are interesting. Mostly I just really like the character Georgia Davis. I have already purchase the 5th book in the series and will be reading it next. Also will probably go back and try the Ellie Foreman series after that. If you like gritty female detectives, you will like these books.
Despite the disturbing scenarios, portrayed in all four of the books, this was an extremely stimulating journey through the life and times, which were, Georgia Davis. Action abounds throughout these adventures and the reader is continually kept on the edge of their seat. Very hard to put down and harder still not to grab on to the next book once one is completed. Highly recommended reading.
I live in Illinois and I believe this is the first book I have read that takes place in Illinois. I like recognizing the streets and suburbs of Chicago that I am aware of and the travels to central Illinois to cities I frequent. That along with this being an amazing series makes it No. 1 recommended read for me! Definitely a series you will be glad you read!!!
The main character is brilliant and broken. I like Georgia Davis a lot. Her flaws make her human and helpful to those in trouble. They also interfere in successful relationships. The complexity of the criminals and their organizations kept me guessing and turning pages. This is a great series!
Georgia receives a note from a sister she didn't know she had, who now is in trouble and needs her help! Trying to find her leads her into sex trafficking, babies and organs being sold illegally, the Russian Mafiosi! What a story! Also we are involved in Georgia's love life for those of you who are interested!
This series is not particularly well written but that doesn’t take away anything from the underlying story of a female ex police officer’s life in the very male world of law enforcement. The stories link well together and there’s lots of action alongside her struggles. Definitely worth a read while lying on the beach or sitting in a long plane ride.
PI Georgia Davis has you on a suspenseful journey from book one to book four! Each book starts with a bang and the all to human Georgia Davis will have you turning pages with her edgy attitude. Highly recommend
I love Georgia!!! I books are like SUV or any other suspense drama on TV. I am lucky that I just to see the words, I can see the story in my head. The story lines and characters are written well. The mystery and suspense will keep you reading.
I purchased the Georgia Davis box set and am enthralled with the settings, stories, and characters. As weird as it sounds this was a good one to get “sheltered in place” with so I could do some marathon reading.
I always get a little Leary when trying a new author. New to me that is. I happily read every word of this boxed set. I am excited for the next one. It's nice to find books with fresh ideas and Libby knows how to write them. Thank you for a great week.
I am an avid reader! Couldn’t put this series til I finished it! I would recommend this author to anyone who loves mystery books, especially to my sister who I taught the love of books when I was 7 years old and she was three years old!
Usually I find myself at o with the protagonist, but this woman is really amazing and her bak story is compelling. The actual plots are well spun and well written. The combination is a great read!
Georgia Davis has the most interesting cases. I thought it was cheating spouses and insurance scams. She or her friends arrive in the nick of time to save the day.
Georgia Davis is an amazing PI who is intuitive and gutsy. She gets drawn into situations that always are multi layered and leaves the reader breathless.
The Georgia Davis PI Series: Boxed Set of 4 by Libby Fischer Hellmann is a collection of conundrums to challenge your sleuthing skills as you follow the PI through four fascinating volumes. Must read, 5-star thrillers.
I was first introduced to her when reading about Ellie Foreman in another series of Helman's. I like how writers will include information from one series in another. You already have some insight to the character.
Book 1: Toxicity introduces Georgia and Matt; book was more about Matt; they are both in the police force but have to live together secretly; Matt during the story falls for the rich woman ricky feldman who is also Jewish which makes matt go for her; georgia was never really accepted by his family; their relationship seems to be in limbo. Plot is intricate and keeps you interested.
Book 2: Easy Innocence takes off where 1 left off; Georgia is now a PI. She gets a case and where she should only be finding a way to get her client cleared she thinks like a cop and still wants to find the killer. At first I wasn't sure what I thought of Georgia's new life as a PI but then I saw how she expertly cracked the case. Good plot that will leave you guessing. I like Georgia's character. She is strong and won't put up with bureaucracy. She does what's right. She also doesn't give in to what other people want. She is true to herself.
Book 3: Doubleback takes off where 2 left off; Georgia is continuing her work as PI. Her old friend Ellie Foreman is in this story. I like Georgia's character. She is strong and determined to fix things. I would have liked to see more romance with her character. The story has a good plot and keeps you entertained. Looking forward to seeing her character develop even more.
This series is a true page turner. I'm so glad I discovered Ms. Hellmanns books. The writing contains enough action and mystery that it seems the pages fly by.
Georgia Davis is getting her PI business going after she walked away from the police department. The police seem to be only moderately motivated to solve the mayhem.
