Lost Boy by Kristen Painter and Bruno Miller

A post apocalypse novella. Humanity is all but eliminated by an alien race. Are we doomed or is there enough fight and willpower to rebuild from scratch and survive? Or is this just a manipulation to the finality of the human race?

No answers here, but an interesting premise and a potential hope.

Followers of my reviews know that I read anything that Kristen Painter releases, but I was a little nervous for this partnership, not because Bruno Miller isn't an excellent author but because usually his dystopian stuff hits a little too close to home and feels a little too real, which is great if you love that kind of thing, but I am more a vampires and romance kind of girl.

That being said I felt compelled to give it a try, and I am really glad I did. This is a very well written author blend, and I couldn't tell who wrote which part while reading, although knowing both authors' styles I could probably figure it out if I really wanted to.

A book that can blindside me once is always a bonus, I do love a good twist, but this one got me a couple of times! Kudos to the authors for mixing things up, and taking a pretty saturated genre and spinning it with a new edge.

I highly recommend this short story for fans of anything Post-Apocalyptic, and even if that's not your thing, (like me), but you love Kristen's other work, for the sake of $0.99 I would say give it a shot.

A solid (and unexpected) 5 stars from me! I didn't expect to enjoy this as much as I did!

Lost boy

If you are like me, you will go into this story with a preconceived idea of the story line. There are no explanations at the beginning, but keep reading because it will all become clear. Interesting story and a very different approach to telling it.

I really liked the dual POVs in this book. It did take me a few chapters to realise who "the soft ones" were and who "the shells" were, though.

The pacing was good and I liked the descriptions of the landscape, how barren everywhere looked and how hard it was for the humans to survive.

The plot twist was very good and for a few pages, I believed the lie that Naomi had told.

I liked the growing friendship between Noami and Jakob. It felt natural and against all odds, despite their differences, they actually had some things in common which helped them work together.

I would've liked a bit more world building and details of the invasion. The information given was limited and so I did get confused a few times.

The ending was ok. It seemed a little abrupt to me and I wanted to read even more about what Naomi and Jakob faced next.

Decent, thoughtful short fiction.

Lost Boy is the story of a boy who meets up with a woman who has figured out how to survive the invaded world they now inhabit. Finished with an open and ambiguous ending, the chance for this to grow into a serial short series is there. I'm not a big short story reader, but really enjoyed this. 4/5stars

An nice journey with surprising twists. I was sure I had it figured out after chapter 2. I was embarrassingly postive. Boy was I wrong. The twists made an already intriguing story even more interesting. I hope the authors continue this story because I need to know what happens next!

Good short fiction

A good story with a nice twist, keeps your attention and it’s finished before you realize it. Worth the effort for a good story from a great writer

Different

This short story was different. The way that you kept the suspense going was good. I hope that you will continue to add to this series.
