I wanted to drop as soon as I realized this was the Kendrick book. I thought by skipping book 2, I was skipping his book. =_=

The prologue made me think that Jackson was going to have a redemption arc but nooooooope, this is actually a Willow becoming badass story that begins 125 pages in. It was super super frustrating to get to that point and realize EVERYTHING I READ WAS JUST EXPOSITION. I know that Jackson wasn’t a great person but at least he didn’t force Willow to gnaw her own freaking leg off like Kendrick did to Lee. It seemed like Jackson’s whole life, no one taught him how he was supposed to act because of his rank in their pack.

Do I want to finish this book? Eh, not really. I kinda empathize more with Jackson than Willow (that prologue had me all omg he’s misunderstood this situation and he was a real jerk but he’s actually a cuddly oaf aww). And I really can’t stand Kendrick. He’s probably gonna tell some sort of redeeming bullshit but oh hell no, I don’t wanna hear it.

Now excuse me while I go bang my head against the wall and regret reading all those pages and becoming invested because really? Really??? REALLY!!!!?????

MY FAVORITE BOOK IN THE SERIES!
I used all caps, which is something I dislike when people do, but I had to yell it because I loved this book. I read it twice in the same weekend and I will likely re-read this many more times. It is simply great. Yes there is a lot of abuse and violence in the world Lynn Katzenmeyer has created. Some of the themes and the character's trauma is hard to take in, but it is done SO WELL.

Hands down, the best. Had my chest constricted for them the whole read. I wanted it to not end. I have seen some critique of elements with Willow our main character. It does take her a long time to see beyond the confines of the wold shifter society that she has lived in, but I am fine with that because it is realistic. How many of us truly challenge our core beliefs and transform our lives especially as teens? I was not a Willow fan until we got into her head, then I was glued to my screen reading and re-reading.

This has an element that I love in all romance, though keep in mind that this is not a traditional romance and if you are searching for those commonly used elements you will not find them here. To get back to that part that always catches my heart, the "He's loved her forever." It gets me every time and this was no different. I don't doubt that Willow's mate loves her. I also recognize that love does not make compatibility, respect within a relationship, and long term happiness a given.

It is nice to think that "We're mates, now everything is perfect." is the way it works. Well what if it doesn't? We all have hurt the ones we love at one time or another. It might be small, a joke that triggered something sensitive for them. A hurtful statement made thrown out in anger. Just ignoring things that are important to them.

What I love about Lynn Katzenmeyer's work is she catches the subtle and the egregious with the same skill in her story telling. I was riveted. Please return to Jackson. Please. I want to feel the pain from his side too. Which sounds odd. I am not particularly attached to him finding a HEA, I just want the inside look at his love and his journey as a bully. If anyone can explore that it is this author.

I also want her to write more. Selfishly I want it to come fast and still live up to the standard this book has set for her work, so I will say this. I want the flawless finish more than the speed. Take your time, I want books I will re-read as often as I have this one and plan to continue. Work that I have to think about and emotionally digest for days. I have not found that before in this genre and it is a genre I love. Thank you for this book.

O MY GOODNESS !!!

I Loved 💘 the first one second books in this series but this book blew me away. I laughed, I cried and I never wanted anyone taken out and beheaded more than I wanted someone to do to Jackson. How he could treat Willow like that and get away with it really *issed me off. Aster needed a good spanking and needed to grow up. I am so happy that there are more books coming and I really Love 💘that these books are long and detailed. I grew to love almost all of the people in these books. I got to watch them grow and become (most of them) the people they were meant to be. It made me so happy to see them find their person, Become parents and find what they were looking for. It's so nice to see the underdog get their happy ever after. It upset 😡 me that we didn't get to meet the twins, But that will probably happen in the next book. I hope that I don't have to wait to long for that to happen. I have found my new favorite Author and I am going to buy all of her series. I couldn't put this book down once I got into it and can hardly wait to get started on the next one. It is so nice to finally find long books that grab me and don't let go until the last word. I could picture the people and places she discribbed and really know what they looked like. It was wonderful. Thank you so much for taking me away from my every day life and letting me live a day or more in someone else's shoes for a little while. It was Amazing...

Kiotenai pack is toxic poison and should be disbanded

This pack is toxic poison.

Aster is right and Kendrick should die. I would’ve rather read about aster and her pack because that is a good pack, but after 2 books about Kendrick and his woe is me attitudes I am done with this author

Aster is great and would’ve rather read about her.

Willow and Kendrick don’t make a good couple.

The relationship growth in this book is non-existent as it’s split too much between too many characters that we don’t truly get a sense of love between couples.

Willow is not the best and needs quite a bit of improvement complaining about aster letting weaker pups eat first, but everyone in that pack is so toxic that it should be disbanded.

Jackson and Kendrick just give dumb excuses for destroying their mates.

What?

I loved the first 2 books of the series. This one left me with too many unanswered questions. How an untrained submissive with panic disorder suddenly fights and trains others. A dead alfa's command still in effect so she can't communicate as she should. A total about face change of character in Jackson(a bully stays a bully). Most of all, with the way this pack works, WHY is Jackson not published and just allowed to come back???? Aster defends him, knowing him??? Too many questions.

Wonderful Winning Willow

Fallen Lorde backtracks on some of the more exciting events in Ghost Eyes and shows the backstory behind Willow Lorde’s epic victory against her father-in-law to become Beta of the pack. This is the third book in the Kootenai Pack series. It can be read as a stand-alone, but the story will make more sense if you start at the beginning and read Tooth and Claw.

The Opening

The prologue serves to remind the reader what happened immediately after the challenge scene in Ghost Eyes. But then chapter 1 takes us way back in time to when Willow and Jackson first became a couple.

This story would have worked just as well without the prologue. In fact, it would make a better stand-alone without the prologue, which would only serve to confuse newcomers to the series. Further, the events narrated as a told event in the prologue are much better shown in chapter 21, making the prologue redundant.

Chapter 1 is a great introduction to Willow and her struggles. It begins with clear conflict and ends on a fabulous cliffhanger ending.

The Characters

Willow is a badass female protagonist and a clear sympathetic character. Despite being small and relatively frail, she uses her dexterity and cunning to win challenges. The way she is introduced in chapter 1 is wonderful, showing her fear and insecurities. You can’t help but like her.

I like the subtle differences in opinion that develop between Willow and Jackson. But I like the more overt ones, too, such as the question of children. I’ve never liked Jackson since he hit Aster in Tooth and Claw. The way he is introduced in this book, I like him even less. I do like his malapropism, though, especially how it annoys Willow so much.

I still don’t like Kendrick much, but at least he’s trying to learn his lesson from his time with Jen in Ghost Eyes. The further away from Aster’s story we stray, the more appealing he becomes, and I loved his character development arc in the final stage of this novel. However, I detested his actions near the end of this book in relation to interfering with Willow’s relationship with Jackson.

The Plot

This fabulous werewolf romance starts with wonderful relationship-related action and just gets better as it goes on. I really loved the resolution at the end…a happy ending for two characters who have suffered across three whole books.

I enjoyed the events of chapter 18 when Willow’s skills become apparent and Jackson’s disdain more evident, but I absolutely adored the climactic events of chapters 20 and 21. Awesome stuff. In retrospect, a slower and much earlier introduction of Willow’s abilities may have provided better foreshadowing, but I still loved how this chapter shifted the whole direction of this novel.

The slow development of the main relationship arc starting on p.142 and accelerating on p.144 is wonderful. I truly enjoyed seeing the changes unfold.

I didn’t like the plot pinch beginning on p.197 concerning Kendrick and Jackson. However, it does work. I just don’t like how it makes Kendrick look such an idiot.

The Setting

As I mentioned in my review of Ghost Eyes, I love how we keep going back to that same dingy motel. It’s intriguing how Willow was “welcomed” in contrast to the previous welcomes the other characters have received. It serves to cement the reader’s view that Willow is now badass. So badass that she causes more reaction than a one-armed teenage runaway.

Otherwise, the setting was adequate to show us where we were as the story unfolded. Since this is the third book in the series, it wasn’t as necessary. Readers who come to this book as a stand-alone won’t be confused.

The Prose

This story is successfully shown rather than told, except for the prologue as mentioned before. I mean, it’s shown, but the main portion of it relates to past events that one character is telling another, making it told from the point of view of story exposition.

Like with the previous books, there are multiple typos that detract from the story. This is sad because this novel is so good that it deserves better editing. Below are a selection of typos I noted in passing.

p.40: She licked chest his hair and… p.50: He’s an expert on the law which more valuable now… p.97: You’re going to hack it a part because… (apart) p.111: Heston’s tail thumped (missing period.) p.112: he growled and fist flew toward me… p.227: the wolf who fell… (toppled) p.124: it’s only a matter of time before the pack starts to push pack against… p.133: You’re knew to this… p.145: you’re tearing this pack a part… p.157: Some nights after a session, he as… p.192: By Kyla… p.194: His wants to be better led actions. p.201: Excellent, thank you Emily.

My Opinion

Overall, I loved this paranormal romance. I’ve enjoyed the whole Kootenai Pack series so far. This book just tied off so many things left over from the previous two books in a wonderful way that kept me eagerly turning the pages. This novel is an easy 5 out of 5 for me.

Willow is my favorite in this series so far. She's petite, anxiety ridden, smart, caring, and secretly the biggest badass of the pack. The Moon Goddess deals Willow a bad hand when her Moon Blessed mate turns out to be Jackson Lorde. The guy who bullied her in highschool. Jackson is a terrible mate; he doesn't listen to anything Willow has to say, doesn't want to have pups with her, and doesn't treat her as an equal in any way. When Willow discovers that Jackson's fight for next beta of the pack will be a fight to the death, Willow enters the ring before Jackson. Her wolf is small and quick, so when she unexpectedly wins the title Jackson is pissed. Jackson leaves her beaten and bloody, but Willow picks herself up and moves on. She soon becomes the best Beta the pack never expected. She takes her duties seriously and gets shit done. She and Kendrick develop a friendship that soon turns into something more. When Jackson shows up again, things get complicated even though Willow already has her mind set.

A third of this outing hashes Willow’s POV from her first shift through the Beta battle, showing pack leadership expectations for a perfect Beta pair. (i.e. Jackson’s struggles with his father’s high expectations despite obvious limitations; Willow’s chafing under alpha orders to accept Jackson’s ridicule of her and his womanizing.

Getting past the events of Ghost Eyes, Willow’s family shows their displeasure over her new role that brings her so much satisfaction. In discussing Jen’s ‘disappearance’ with Kendrick, she offers good recommendations and advice setting the stage for a flexible friendship between them.

To this reader’s taste, the outing would’ve been better served as novella and the telegraphed ending was so evident by the midpoint of the book, I didn’t really want to continue but did in the hope other goodies would be revealed.

Again another entertaining read, It was nice to finally get the Alfa's happy ending. I did still scratch my head at some of the story lines:
How was Willow still under a dead Alfas command, but this command did not stop her leaving Jackson like it should of and how did she transform into this unbelievable super undefeated Beta over night?
How did Jackson turn from a controlling manipulative mean bully to a doating mate who just wants her to be happy?
And why on earth was Lee defending Jackson, it was very hypocritical of her and completely out of character.
Like the other books I finished with a head full of questions, but I did enjoy the book so can't complain to much.

I liked it.

I have started to hate Lee/Astrid(?). She needs to let go of at least a bit of her grievances to even consider the possibility that K is redeemed. How can she promote that Jackson is redeemed and not want to accept that it is possible for K too.

Hated our heroine's family, Jackson's sister was really not likable either. Jackson is such a prick! I am sure he will be getting his own book which will tell us about why he did all the things he did. I wish the writer would resolve these questions in the current books.

There are still things very vague in the writing style but this was much better than previous two books.

A must read after the first and second in the series

I was so glad to read this book and see the conclusion of Kendricks story. It was a big journey from book 1 to 3 but I was really happy with the direction Lynn took it.
I’ve really liked this series and the different angle on the classic shifter mates that Lynn takes. Definitely recommend them all

Great read and completion if series

This would have got a 5-star rating if it wasn't for the grammar, spelling, pronoun, writing errors. Most of the time I had to figure out what the author was trying to say in order to keep reading. I thoroughly enjoyed the ending of the book series. It was well worth the read!

SPOILERS BELOW

Not gonna lie, I skipped the second book in the series to read this one because I had no interest in Kendrick. and then Kendrick ended up her lover 🙃 whelp. but he was markedly better than freaking JACKSON that douchbag. that man could never return and I would be pleased. hopefully he stays gone, but I don't think that'll happen.

Good.

Trigger warnings for abuse but man these characters crawl in your heart and take up space. This series broke my heart for them but they keep struggling to find their happiness. I hope everyone does eventually.

What a jurney

This book was mostly about Willow and the way her life was planned out for her. The fear of a major change in her family causes her world to spin out of its projected course. I really enjoy the way these books are written.

Thank you Ms. Lynn! I loved this book! I agree with you that trauma is a hard subject to talk about and harder to deal with. You did an excellent job. Thank you for giving Kendrick and Willow their HEA!

The author couldn’t help herself in the third of the series

Past/present clunky exposition. Willow magically transforms from servile, weak wolf into the loving beta to loser Kendrick. Posting a review just so I don’t forget to avoid in the future.

This story truly blows my mind!
A well written series about Rejected Mate.

Trigger warnings:
Steam level: not explicit, close-door sex mentioned

The gist of the book is about "what if". What if the fated and the blessing mate is wrong? To wallow in self-pity or has the courage to live alone is a choice. The person you love the most, hurt you the most.

Willow is an engaging protagonist, a beta woman without support from anyone, not even her family or members of the pack. I admire her dedication to gain respect. I admire the way she reacted to the unforgiving person. The author does a great job to depict the vulnerability of a woman in the pack - as collateral, in such a demanding role at the same time not being appreciated enough.

I've never expected such a deep revelation from this book: The redeemability is nothing about the degree of remorse, the power of forgiveness is overstated.

The ending is one of the satisfied hard-earned HEAs I've read in a long time.

I wonder if we would get Jackson's POV or his side of the story in the future.
