This series has absolutely captured my attention and I've been binge listening to the first 3 books this weekend. I absolutely love Bernie, the main character, who is an intelligent middle aged women with a real job who just happens to hear a lot of talk that leads her to assisting the police find their way to the right suspect. There is a lot happening in this book and I can't wait to see what happens in the next as this cozy had me up late into the night listening away! As of now this is the last available on audio so I'll have to find time to squeeze a sit down read into my schedule to read the next couple of books in this series!
There's nothing like returning to Sugar Creek Gap and visiting with Bernie and her friends the Front Porch Ladies. Their beloved Zeke that all the single older ladies loved to dream about had gotten married to one of the most pompous rich women in town. The woman wasn't known for a nice personality, so it came as no surprise when she ended up dead. The sheriff actually asked Bernie for some help this time.
I wasn't happy with what was going on with Bernie and her boyfriend Mac, but I trust this author from other series and main character love connections, so I know it'll end up being fine. The showdown was short but exciting. I just loved what Bernie did to the killer! I won't be waiting too long to read the next book!
All She Wrote by Tonya Kappes is the 3rd A Mail Carrier Cozy Mystery. This fun tale can be read on its own if you are new to the series (but why would you want to). It contains Tonya Kappes engaging writing style which draws a reader right in. Bernadette Butler is a great protagonist. I like that she is my age and starting over with her life. The Front Porch Ladies, Vince, and Bernie’s family are other enjoyable characters. They are likeable and realistic. The southern setting of Sugar Creek Gap, Kentucky is charming. I enjoy the descriptions of this cozy southern town where everybody knows your name and your business. The mystery suited the story. It is straightforward with a couple of suspects and a red herring. There are good clues to aid readers in solving the whodunit. I enjoyed the humor that is scattered throughout this appealing tale. All She Wrote is well-written with relatable characters in a welcoming southern town. I would expect nothing less from this author. I look forward to Bernadette’s next adventure in Return to Sender. All She Wrote is a fetching cozy mystery with clan concerns, a plethora of packages, gossip galore, tasty treats, and murderous mulch.
All She Wrote earns 5/5 Packages & Gossip...Entertaining Fun!
Tonya Kappes has definitely penned another delightful murder mystery on which Bernadette Butler and the Front Porch Ladies can focus in this third book in her Mail Carrier Cozy. Harriette Pearl, one of the Front Porch Ladies, has set her sights on the very eligible Zeke Grey, however, Florence Gaines, the wealthiest woman in Sugar Creek Gap, is keen on Zeke, too. She’s also not shy about flaunting it, her philanthropy, and her lunch date with Zeke. Harriette’s reaction...bright green! Florence’s niece is new in town having taken a position at the high school, but her real “mission” is to keep an eye on Florence. Then Iris Peabody, Bernadette’s long-time friend, is known to have “special feelings,” nothing psychic since most are more miss than hit. Today it’s hard to dismiss her prognostications when she mentions Bernie’s son: “High school. Teacher. Grady. I don’t know what, but something is off.” And Bernadette, our delightful mail carrier, is once again learning her position is much like a bartender or therapist, she is privy to so much information from the packages residents receive, the relationships they have, and the gossip they share, but the shocking marriage and murder in the mulch was not something typical on her route! It seems Florence has an enemy, but which one—New husband? Niece? Green-eyed Nemesis? It is a delightful puzzle perfect for a bit of “snooping.”
I so enjoy that the lead characters are of a mature age, and the running around questioning, gathering clues, and predicaments are developed with good sense and realism. The mystery, Kappes-style, always occurs a little later in the story providing plenty of time to build up the suspense around the victim, then cleverly exposing the suspects to mull over when the body is finally uncovered...in the mulch! Greed? Secrets? Along with the engaging murder mystery, Bernie is the consummate mother, in a positive way; when it comes to her son Grady, she wants him happy, but adult children can often be a challenge to manage. All is delightful fun! Recipes, of course, are my favorite treat...literally and figuratively. In this book, I can’t wait to enjoy Southern Strawberry and Cream Cupcakes, Hummingbird Cake, and Turtle Bars.
A little extra...I also enjoy the clever names given to titles, series, towns, and businesses, and Tonya is one to always provide a nice giggle with the names she creates: the Social Knitwork Shop for a knitting class, Leaf and Petal for wheelbarrows full of mulch, and the Pie in the Face Bakery for a sweet treat. Lots of fun.
Disclosure: I received an ARC from the author. My review is voluntary with honest insights and comments.
Bernadette (Bernie)Buttler, along with the Front Porch Ladies, are curious about their new neighbor, Courtney Gaines. Courtney is the niece of Florence Gaines, the wealthiest widow in Sugar Creek Gap. Florence let everyone know she is seeing Zeke Gray. The Front Porch Ladies have all been competing to get Zeke’s attention. A few days later Florence makes another shocking announcement that she and Zeke are now married. Later that same day while delivering the mail Bernie overhears what could be Florence and Zeke's first marital spat. Courtney also let it be known that she is upset with some of her aunt’s decisions. Just a short time later Florence is found murdered. Bernie gets involved in the investigation after some people near and dear to her are suspects.
This series gets better with every book! Bernie is a very relatable and realistic character. She is a well-developed character, as are the secondary characters. Grady (Bernie’s Son) and his wife Julia are expecting a baby in this book. Between the baby pending arrival and the murder investigation, Bernie's emotions are all over the place. The Front Porch Ladies are always fun and provide some comic relief. The mystery is well written. There are several suspects, each one has a good reason to kill the victim. In addition to several suspects the mystery is full of twists and turns to keep you guessing whodunit. I look forward to the next book in the series.
All thoughts and opinions are my own, and in no way, I have been influenced by anyone.
Bernadette Butler is looking forward to the birth of her first grandchild. With her son and his wife living in her farmhouse, Bernie is adjusting to life in a small town, a move that was within walking distance to her post office job and gives her more time to do other fun things (now that she doesn't have farm chores). But her new neighbor, Courtney, is causing her some concern. Is Grady spending too much time helping her, or is it just her imagination. And then there's all that gossip about the town's very own wealthy widow in Sugar Creek, Florence Gaines...is she involved with her neighbor, Zeke, who also happens to be the heartthrob of several of Bernie's Porch Ladies friends. And when murder occurs, can Bernie use the gossip on her daily mail route to determine the murderer and clear one of the suspects, someone that is near and dear to her. This is an enjoyable small Southern town, ladies gossipy, cozy murder mystery. Bernie is in her 50's, so older than some featured in cozies, but a strong, independent and outspoken woman who is comfortable in her current lifestyle. Sometimes her outspokenness gets her in trouble, but she is quick to admit if she has made a mistake. This is the first book I have read in this series, but it was relatively easy to pick up the various relationships and back stories. I have already downloaded the first two books so that I can catch up on Bernie's adventures. Disclosure: I am voluntarily reviewing this book and all opinions are strictly my own.
Bernadette is settling into her new life off the farm. She has her new house, closer to town, a new dog, she's taking knitting classes and she has a new grandbaby on the way.
Florence, the Grand Dame of the town, is doing some crazy things. She awards her scholarship to someone questionable, she decides to elope, she ends up dead!
Bernadette feels like she needs to figure out who did it, after all members of her family are suspected. With the help of her friend Iris, the opinions of the Porch ladies and a slew of people who had reasons for wanting Florence dead, your head will be spinning trying to figure out who done it.
In Bernadette 's personal life, she will experience heartache and extreme joy in the same story. I hope that her sadness gets resolved.
A satisfying read that make you anxious for the next book in the series.
Bernadette Butler has a new neighbor, and she's worried about the friendship that the young woman has struck up with her son. When Florence Gains, a do-gooder who demands recognition for everything she does gives a scholarship to a person the rest of the community doesn't think needs it as he comes from a well to do family. She receives some backlash. When Florence is found murdered next door to Bernadette, there are several suspects. Including Bernadette's very pregnant daughter in law, as she had been there to tell her to stay away from her husband.
Another fun story with developed characters, some humor, some intrigue, and a couple of animals that keep Bernadette busy.
I think I'm leaving the train after this book. The series started out great, but I noticed inconsistencies between the first and the second book and now there's even more in book 3. That doesn't work well with me. I'm a stickler for details.
Mac has gradually become my least favourite character and I no longer see any reason for Bernadette to be interested in him. He's actually kind of a dick in this one and their "relationship" (apparently it's very hard to come to terms with what a relationship means even if you're over 50) feels so awkward.
Bernie didn't want "companionship" in book 2 and even spent time complaining about the word and what it meant. Yet in this book... It's suddenly a companionship. And it's dead boring. And useless. Apparently being over 50 doesn't make it possible to talk things out like grown up people and sort things out in an adult way. *sigh*
Oh well... The murder was fine. Once again the most predictable person was the killer and that irked me somewhat. The entire book was planting the idea that the murderer was an over-all horrible person so you were supposed to root for them going to prison, I guess.
Book 3 is about Bernadette a mail carrier lady . Her son Grady and daughter in law Juliet are having a baby in this one. Bernie has taking up knitting and The Front Porch Ladies ( that Bernadette calls the older ladies on her route that always waits for their mail ) were there in the Knitting Shop that Keith's owned Social Knitwork. Iris Bernie best friend told her to do other things now since Bernie let Grady and his wife have the farm for their new born. Anyways a rich lady Florence stop by with her niece that just moved in. Florence was being rude to the knitters but Courtney her niece seemed kinda of embarrassed by it. Florence was dating the older bachelor Zeke that everyone had an eye on. Well Florence got killed in Courtney back yard. Juliet was suspect because Courtney seemed to want Grady. It was it Zeke that had a secret or the young adults that Florence did not give a scholar shop to or was it her neice. This book did not really run with the story of what happened in some of the plot. And I would not like a most Mail carrier knowing all my business. But Bernadette is friendly enough. But she is totally nosy in her work as a carrier
Bernie gets caught up in another murder, and this time, it hits too close to home. Florence, the town philanthropist, turns up murdered. Bernie has several potential murderers in mind, and one happens to be a close relative. Bernie tries to eliminate the suspects, and only realizes too late a flaw in that reasoning. It’s a good mystery, and it’s always nice to catch up with the characters in the story. Bernie’s relationship with her boyfriend, Mac, seems to be going downhill in a hurry. But with the birth her first grandchild imminent, she likely will be too busy spoiling the baby to bother with a boyfriend!
Tonya Kappes writes so that you feel you are one of the characters. This time Bernie is once again in the middle of a murder trying to solve it with the help of friends. This time though one of her own could be the killer. Find out who by reading the book.
All She Wrote A Mail CarrierCozy Mystery, Book #3 Tonya Kappes 5 Stars
Synopsis:
Welcome to the southern small town with endearing citizens, adorable animals, a smidgen of gossip with a touch of humor where there are twists and turns around every corner as they solve a local murder.
Mail carrier, Bernadette (Bernie) Butler, along with the Front Porch Ladies, are curious of their new neighbor, Courtney Gaines, who is the niece of Florence Gaines, the wealthiest widow in Sugar Creek Gap. Florence lets it be known that she is seeing Zeke Grey, which doesn't set well with the Front Porch Ladies. They were all in competition for Zeke's attention.
Shortly after learning that Florence, who announced it rather loudly, that she and Zeke got married, while delivering the mail, Bernie overhears what could be the first marital spat.
As Bernie is happily awaiting the birth of her first grandchild, her best friend shares a feeling that something isn't right between Bernie's son, Grady, and her daughter-in-law, Julia. Grady seems to be very chummy with Courtney, which has Bernie singing high praise of Julia and how there is a new baby on the way.
When Florence turns up dead in mulch, coupled with what Sheriff Angela Hafley mentioned, Bernie can't help but want to get involved and when Sheriff Angela requests Bernie to be a 'snoop consultant', she readily agrees. Bernie's snooping leads her to information that hits a little too close to home and Bernie enlists her best friend, Iris for help. (Goodreads)
Review:
The characters are well rounded and well developed. Bernie and Iris are great friends, and I enjoyed reading about their adventures. When Iris has a bad feeling about Bernie’s son and daughter-in-law, she cannot help but be concerned. And when someone is killed and it looks like a member of her family is blamed, Bernie has to solve the murder or die trying.
The writing style flows smoothly and it defines the characters very clearly by their actions and words. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions pulled me into the story from the very beginning.
The mystery was well plotted and carried on well throughout the book. There were enough clues to sift through and suspects to consider and it was not easily solved, which is how I like my mysteries.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. With engaging characters, a warm southern setting and an engaging mystery, pick up your copy and enjoy.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book and provided my honest review.
This series gets better with every book! I love Bernie. I really relate to her! I love the way she is working things out. Don’t get me wrong, she is a well developed character. There was just something in her life that she is working through. It’s so realistic to me. Isn’t there always something new coming at you? Sometimes it’s easy and sometimes it’s something that we need to chew on. Bernie has something that most would need to chew on. The author has also written in a variety of supporting characters that really play a big part in the atmosphere of the story. The Front Porch Ladies are always fun and provide some comic relief. Her parents, son Grady and Julia provide warm, family support. I can’t wait to read more about Grady’s expanding family. Iris is Bernie’s best friend and Mac has played a big part in Grady and Bernie’s lives. One character I like a lot is Vince. He doesn’t have a big role but I’m drawn to him. I look forward to Bernie’s chats with him. Bernie also has Rowena and Buster as part of her support system along with a duck on her mail route. I just love when animals are included in the story. This one had the added fun of a bird, Blue Belle. I sure hope she makes some more appearances. The mystery was a good one. There were a few suspects and each had good reason to kill the victim. I like how the author isn’t afraid to have her character flawed and conflicted in her sleuthing. It really follows a natural path that makes me feel better about my reaching the wrong conclusion. My opinion is this book is a five star read. I was able to lose myself in the story. I felt comfortable with the characters, even the victim. I wonder how the loss of her will affect the town, especially charities. I’ll stop here so I don’t spill the beans. Y’all go on, fix up a snack, find you a comfortable spot and settle in with this book. You can read it out of order if you’re just interested in the mystery. In my opinion, though, you’ll get a better picture of things by reading the books in order.
All She Wrote is the third instalment in the Mail Carrier Mystery Series by Tonya Kappes. I loved returning to Sugar Creek Gap Kentucky and visiting Bernadette, the Front Porch Ladies and we can’t forget Buster and Rowena.
One quote in book I resonated with was when iris and Bernadette say “We can be just two old biddies together.” Iris winked at me. “Promise?” I knew Iris and I would always be together no matter what. Through thick and thin. (My BFF and I are always saying this )
I enjoyed this instalment so much, it was even better than the first Stamped Out! Tonya Kappes has done it again writing another wonderful story with characters I love and want to get to know better. I love that Bernadette aka Bernie is in her 50’s I can relate to her, and I want to learn to knit at the Social Knitwork ! Hell I want to rent the house next to Bernie and hang out with them.
I always know that if I need to escape for a little while that I can pick up one of Tonya’s books and be transported into a town with people I want as neighbors and friends. The stories are well written, filled with humour and a little murder.
There were just enough suspects, twists and turns to keep me guessing and not wanting to put the book down! I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves cozy mysteries.
I’m looking forward to book four Return to Sender releasing in June, there’s so much more I want to know...
I requested and received an Advanced Readers Copy from the publisher. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
There is a lot going on in Sugar Creek Gap these days. Mail Carrier, Bernadette Butler's son and daughter-in-law are expecting their first child. Florence Gaines, the richest widow in town, will soon be awarding a College Scholarship to one lucky high school graduate. Florence's niece, Courtney Gaines, has recently moved to town and taken a job at the same school where Grady teaches. Courtney has also rented the house next door to Bernadette from Mac Tabor.
When the scholarship winner is announced, many people are shocked and upset about the selection. Immediately following the scholarship announcement, Florence left the church and joined Zeke Grey at city hall, where they got married. Later, while delivering mail to Zeke's house, Bernie overhears part of what appears to be a marital spat.
Bernie expects Mac to show up Saturday evening, but her friend, Harriette, shows up first. While Bernie and Harriette are talking in the kitchen, Bernie hears a loud scream outside. Going to investigate, she sees Courtney out in the rain. When a lightning flash lights up the area, Bernie notices a pair of shoes sticking out of some newly laid mulch. Under the mulch is Florence's body and she is definitely dead.
Who killed Florence? Why was she killed? Was the killing related to the scholarship program? Can Bernie figure out what really happened?
This latest addition from Tonya Kappes has plenty of plot twists and side issues to keep a reader engaged from beginning to end.
Overall I liked this book. I will admit that this is definitely my least favorite series. Bernie has a new neighbor show up. She also happens to be the niece of someone she knows. When the person dies things got interesting. I will admit at times I wasn't a hug fan of Bernie but in the end most everything works out.
This is the third book in this series. Yes, I got pulled down the rabbit hole. As I continue to read these books, I am finding it more difficult to put the books down. Some of the things that happened in this book has seriously pissed me off. Now I must rush and read the next book to see if everything works out. The author definitely has a way of keeping me coming back for more. What a great series!
Another murder mystery to solve in this small town and rest assure Bernie is ready to help the local police department solve this murder. It was great to see that the front porch ladies are still there and helping Bernie along the way. I’m curious to see what happens next with Bernie. I’m a bit sad to see a certain relationship work but eager to see what happens next. If you enjoy southern cozy mysteries I would recommend this series.
All She Wrote by Tonya Kappes is a fabulous, fun can't put it down, great read. I just love how Tonya Kappes pulls you in with her alluring characters, fascinating small town, and captivating mystery.
Bernie Butler is the Mail Carrier in the small town of Sugar Creek Gap. This is a plus when she wants to hear all the gossip. When the uppity Francine Gaines is found dead in her niece Courtney's yard, which just happens to be next door to Bernie, the snooping begins especially since her son Grady and his wife Julia could be suspects. Bernie keeps her ear to the ground as she makes her rounds delivering mail to report back to the sheriff but not everyone likes her snooping. Can she help find who really killed Florence and why?
Bernie is levelheaded and fits right in with the town's people. I had a good laugh when she was trying to knit. The victim Francine Gaines flaunts her money and wants all the attention but that doesn't always work in her favor in fact it doesn't make her too popular with everyone. Her niece comes to town to keep an eye on Francine for the family because they think Francine is losing it but is she really and what really is Courtney up to. From the start I didn't like Courtney there was just something about her that rubbed me the wrong way and made me not trust her. I love Bernie's best friend Iris and her feelings she gets. The Front Porch Ladies are always ready to help and gossip. They remind me of some of the women I know. I would love to sit down and have a cup of coffee or iced tea with them all. The book just has a comfortable feeling even when there's a murder to solve. I think that one of my favorite lines is at the end of the book when Iris says to Bernie " We can just be two old biddies together" true friendship.
This book is so good and full of friendship, some romance, small town gossip and a good mystery to solve. I highly recommend this book and series
I received an ARC of this book for my honest opinion and review
Bernadette (Bernie) Butler, along with the Front Porch Ladies, get introduced to Bernie's new neighbor, Courtney Gaines, while taking a knitting class. Courtney is Florence's niece.
I had to laugh that Bernie's snooping skills are far better than her knitting skills with visions of using her knitting needles as weapons out of frustration. I could picture the Front Porch Ladies all waiting in anticipation for Bernie to deliver a "smell-good letter", which lead to a comment about "trying to hold a conversation with these four women was like being in a room full of squirrels." As the list of suspects grows, so do the chuckles; as this mystery will keep you laughing and guessing.
I received an ARC and I have voluntarily reviewed this book.
Bernadette had no idea how life would be once moving into town. Her new address makes it easier for her to head home after work, she has more time to spend with the “Front Porch Ladies,” as well as living closer to Mac. When Courtney Gaines, niece to the infamous Florence Gaines, the wealthiest woman in Sugar Creek Gap, moves in next door to Bernie the gossip starts flying. When Florence marries heartthrob Zeke Grey, tongues really start wagging! Zeke was on all the older women’s radar as husband material. Not only are the Front Porch ladies upset, Courtney gets into a heated argument with her aunt about the wedding. Later Florence ends up dead in Courtney’s newly tilled backyard, Bernie find herself thrown into the mix. Will she be able to unearth the dirt on the killer or will she be buried with the truth?
I enjoyed this book even more than the previous two. I love how Bernie relates to the Front Porch ladies. Harriette is a favorite character of mine, she is spunky, fierce and loyal. I’m not sure what’s going on between Bernie and Mac, I hope they figure things out! With loveable characters and a plenty of suspects to keep you guessing, this entertaining cozy will keep you turning the pages. The laugh-out-loud moments and Southern sayings will put a smile on your face. Tonya Kappes certainly knows how to craft a cozy series that will keep you coming back for more. I received and advance copy of this book, all opinions expressed are my own.
I probably would’ve given it three stars but I deducted one for all of the vilification of the “hormonal” pregnant lady. 🙄
Also Bernadette’s son Grady is a jerk for sharing inside jokes between him and his wife with some new woman in town. He spent so much time with the new woman it was stressing his very pregnant wife—but she’s just being “hormonal.”
It was nice to see at least some of the wrongly accused holding Bernadette accountable for all her false accusations and demanding apologies.

Bernie lives in the small town ofSugar Creek Gap KY. Her parents run the local café and her married son is a teacher about to welcome his first child. Bernie's mail route allows her to know more about some of the residents than the Front Porch Ladies … and puts her in the right spot to find out why Florence dies so suddenly after getting married. Cute characters, lots of suspects.
The third book in the Mail Carrier Cozy Mystery Series is the darkest of the Series. Family and friendship relationships are strained as the richest woman in town is killed. As usual Bernie becomes involved in trying to help the sheriff solve the murder while coming to terms with what is most important in her life. The main characters are becoming more complex and real.
There are the usual red herrings which make solving the mystery more complicated. I look forward to seeing how this series progresses. I was fortunate to receive an advanced copy of this book.
This is another wonderful book in this series. Bernie gets a new neighbor, Courtney Gaines, who happens to be the niece of Florence Gaines. When a body shows up in Courtney’s yard, there are several suspects. I kept going back and forth, trying to figure out who the murderer was, finally sticking to one person. The real killer! I really loved the ending; well, except for one part that made me sad.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
This was really great, i loved it the intrigue was well written with great twists and i read it in one sitting. I love how Bernadette's friends look out for her and are protective. I guess the only thing that made me a little sad was the romance part; Mac is sure acting strange but we will probably learn more in the next book so i'm happy
