A Convenient Bride

Rate this book
He meant to have his cake and eat it... to marry a drab little countrified miss, hide her away in the provinces, and pursue his own licentious pleasures in town. And Lord Ashford found just what he wanted in Penelope Stanwood, penniless daughter of the late vicar. Little did he know that he had chosen a spirited hellcat. For, determined to win her husband's love as well as his title, Penelope would attract the aid of Beau Brummel himself to become the most desirable woman in London, the belle of the ton!

I have never heard of this author (let alone read anything by her) before. It appears she has written less than 10 or 12 books and this one being her only historical. I really liked this book. It was a light, fluffy read which is something I really needed when I read it last night. Oh, it had its angst moments but it didn't have a dark, brooding, tortured hero (not that I don't love them, too--just not last nite). Anyway, this is written more in the style of a Harlequen Presents but with a Regency setting. If I can find one of her contemporary ones I think i'll give it a try. Anyway, if you don't mind light, fluffy books this might be a good one to try. SPOILER: Oh, there is cheating--sort of--I mean it just depends on how you look at it. They were married but had not yet consummated their marriage. And this is what I really liked about the book. Instead of "kicking him to the curb she decides to kick the mistess to the curb by fighting for him."

It has been a while since I've read this book, and while I still enjoyed it, I didn't enjoy it as much as in the past. Probably because I realize that while it has an HEA and the hero learns to love the heroine, he's not really a nice person, especially in the beginning. He's screwing around with a married woman, and you're never really told if it stops after the wedding, but I don't think so. That bothered me more than it has in the past.

A relic from my teenage years and one of the first romances I read. I remembered details of the plot but not the title or author until my sister—who had owned the book—and I brainstormed with the help of another sister and Google to find it.

Liked this simple story. A very little angst but enough to keep things rolling. Loved that she was helped by the ton leaders to 'get one over' on the H. No sex, but a lot of almost ( including almost forced ) H finally realizes her reasons for not wanting to consumate their marraige.

I think this was the very first Regency I read, back in the early 80s, and it remained a favorite. I'd love to read it again, though I imagine it probably doesn't hold up.
