Fox Demon Cultivation Manual

Rate this book
By some freak coincidence, Song Ci mistakenly consumed the blood of the Demon King, causing himself to become a demon too. A weak scholar…… forced to suffer in silence.

What was even more tragic was that no matter where he went, demons would attack him from all directions braying for his blood, or they would squeeze his neck while interrogating him about his relationship with the Demon King.

As such, Song Ci became an anti-fan of the Demon King. Regardless of who praised the Demon King, he would be the first to stand out and refute them.

Song Ci fled for his life as he searched for the gate leading to the Demon Realm. Along the way, he clung on to the thigh of an influential man, and went to great pains to persuade him to slay the Demon King together with him and restore peace to the human world.

Song Ci, “Sooner or later, I will skin the Demon King, rip the tendons off him, and drink his blood!”

Rong Bai (smiling), “I admire the way you think.”

Who knew that, after entering the demon realm —

Tens of thousands of monsters bowed their heads and kowtowed to this thigh beside him and shouted “Long live the Demon King!”

Song Ci was stunned.

Rong Bai (smiling), “What did you say you were going to do when you came to the Demon Realm?”

Song Ci, “It, it’s all a misunderstanding……”

Summary is a bit deceiving, it -is- a humorous story but that's not all it is. There are several mini-arcs, all quite interesting and they build up for the main arcs. I enjoyed reading this and I hope I will get to read other books in this series, since I'm rather curious about other pairings that were introduced/talked about.

Not gonna lie, I started this novel because I missed tgcf too much and I needed something to help me get over it. The main plot starts developing after something like fifty chapters so I was super confused at first but I ended up loving it. I'm gonna miss Rong Bai and Song Ci (and also Wen Changchu that little shit)

Cute and lighthearted, a pretty average webnovel. The plot takes a while to get going and I liked the interactions between the protagonist and the side characters (eg. the wolf pup) coz they were pretty cute. I wasn't really a fan of the time travel plot in the second half, and I skimmed the last few arcs.

maybe i need to take a break from danmei because i have had the worst experience with it lately.

fdcm started out so promising. it was interesting! funny! cute! i was invested. the more i read the more confusing it got but that was okay, sometimes you just have to roll with plots because eventually everything will make sense. at least, it should make sense

fdcm did not make sense. it was less the translation and more the writing. this danmei is apart of a series but you could 100% read it without the other ones. my struggle mostly was the pacing and how some things were not explained as well as they should be

it’s a bummer when the characters & main pairings as top notch, amazing, wonderful, etc while the plot is less so. song ci and rong bai chemistry and tension were the main star. i loved their dynamic and all their interactions. they got me through many arcs i didn’t care for simply because of how much i enjoyed their dynamic

i’m almost tempted to mtl the sequel just to see what else happens to song ci & rong bai, that’s how much i liked them 🥹

3.5 stars.

This book was a little confusing in that I’m not sure there was really an overarching plot. Most of it seemed to be extraneous events to better develop the main pairing’s relationship. Even the villains were overly violent and confrontational, to the point where they behaved against their own interests. They didn’t have much substance and were essentially characterized by their hatred and lack of humanity.

I know this sounds like a negative review, but I did enjoy this book. It was a fun read, but it wasn’t anything to write home about.

This is the story of Liang Bei’s cousin from the prequel after he left for the demon world.

Fox Demon Cultivation is part of a trilogy, and Fox Demon is the second book. The prequel, Your Ninth Royal Highness, Please Change Your Clothes, was the one I read before this, and I have yet to read the sequel, The Demon Lord Is Fleeing for His Life Again Today. Definitely read the prequel first! From the description, it may seem like a standalone and it can actually be read as one, but I liked how I could connect the story because I had read the first book. The first book was so-so in my opinion (rated it only 3 stars), but this second book was so much better. Now I can’t wait to dive into the final book.

The start reminded me of TGCF with the bridal sedan and missing maidens, but instead of divine elegance, we get pure fox demon chaos. And I loved it.

Liang Shuhong’s personality did a complete 180 after becoming a demon. Song Ci feels like a new version of him, except this time, with actual character development. At first, the change felt abrupt since he was so docile in the first book, but considering everything he’s been through… yeah, it makes sense. Even though it was mostly summarized, it still justified his transformation.

The story got a little weird midway, but it still delivered. Most of my questions were answered by the end, and that extra? Hot. Okay, not gonna say more. This book had me so hooked I barely left any reactions on my reading thread.

The humor is sharp, the world-building is solid, and the romance? Chef’s kiss. And that last extra was sizzling hot. Definitely didn’t expect a smut!

Alright, I officially like this more than the first book. Haha. Time to jump into the last of the trilogy! 🤭

Just as with many, many books nowadays the plot quality starts combusting in on itself ~75% of the way into the novel. Unlike many, many books the plot quality dive is quite substantial -- going from often optimistic/humorous/suspenseful mystery into something that tries exceptionally hard to be tragic and epic and yet it actually never actually fulfills anything that it promises. From random and convenient situations, such as the forward momentum of the novel is greatly lost over the course of it. The worldbuilding wasn't strong to begin with, except for the chess arc. Side characters started becoming very bland ~75% of the way into the book and the antagonist seems randomly contrived and shoehorned in. The plot starts going off track in the latter 75% of the book which really doesn't help matters and only contributes to the slow death of the book when the ideas start getting used up.

As with a lot of authors, this author is one of those who are the strongest at writing short stories (aka the first few plot arcs) and should have probably tied it all together with some in between material or an overall mystery, but because there is no real plot structure or overarching arc tying the plot together or organic development and tying together of plot elements it managed to fall quite flat.

This book has probably given me premature grey hairs. There were some genuinely enjoyable moments and arcs in this, but on the whole, it was such a mess! I thought the arcs leading up to entering the demon realm were, even if slow and confusing at times, quite intriguing. I especially loved Feng Zhuojun’s story with Jiang Liang. Actually, it was pretty cool how pretty much everyone in this book was gay (I know that the author has several books in this universe, but anyway). Feng Zhuojun kind of being the gay elder/encyclopedia and voice of clarity for Song Ci was really refreshing after reading so much danmei where it seems like the main couple are the first gay couple Ever. I also thought Song Ci’s character was incredibly strong, albeit so unrealistically dense, at least in the first two-thirds. Actually, most of what I really enjoyed about this book was the first two-thirds. And yet it wasn’t until 60% in that, in the author’s words, the main story began. And so the mess truly begins. I’m still pretty confused about the time travel, but I thought Song Ci’s journey to the divine realm was a nice sequence, and his relationship with Rong Bai of the past felt natural if not completely earned. But once he’s back in the present, that’s where this story completely falls apart for me. Both leads have truly melodramatic backstories. And I’m not opposed to melodramas. I mean, I love SVSSS and TGCF. Those are melodramatic as hell. But these melodramas feel purely for the purpose of having the characters kinda just go insane and on murderous rampages without ever reconciling that….? There’s just so much about Song Ci’s character especially that was just lost for me. Honestly, it felt like the author rushed through this book and could’ve used some intense editing (this was kind of confirmed by the author in the postscript, that she was less serious about FDCM than her other books in the same universe). I think I had a bit of high expectations for this novel because my friend recently read and and said this was her “it-couple” (which is how I’d describe Wenzhou from Faraway Wanderers lol), but even the relationship dynamic really fell short for me. There were some great moments in the first two-thirds, but they were of course limited due to circumstances surrounding Rong Bai’s soul. Then, there were also some great moments in the divine realm. But I didn’t really feel a great payoff once everything was settled. I enjoyed little moments mostly due to Song Ci’s idiocy and Rong Bai’s amusement with him, but this couple, despite having this incredibly strong life-altering tie to each other, didn’t feel nearly as vivid as other danmei I’ve read in the same genre. Overall, this was fun and candy for my brain at times, but it feels like I finally read one of the novels that some previous novels I read were satirizing…

On a positive note, I really did think that all the deities—fox demons, vermillion birds, etc—were very neat albeit poorly explained. Also, wtf is the difference between a demon and a devil? Come on. Also, Song Ci continuing to rob those rabbit demons always gave me a giggle.

I’m going to give this a 2.5 (I’ll round down just because I can’t in good conscious rate this the same as other recent 3-star books despite having some fun with it. I gave Devil Venerable 3 stars and that was much much better-written). This was definitely enjoyable at times but on the whole disappointing and frustrating. I probably would not recommend unless someone is truly desperate for a danmei. Sorry Kristina!! <3

EDIT: actually I would lowkey read a book surrounding the two cultivators from Mo Yao, Fu Chi and the other guy whose name I forgot. That was actually my favorite part of the novel.

3.5⭐

Ay, no sé.

what do i say about this book? i feel like this book put my emotions thru the ringer.

i was obsessed; obsessively wanting to absorb every single chapter, and before you know it, it's past your bedtime.

some of the arcs are painful; i cried in at least 2 of the arcs. between devouring each and every chapter, and then being so unbelievably sad, i was also angry at what the f was even going on near the end. one of the arcs definitely wasn't enjoyable to read, but in the end, no regrets in reading this book.

if her other books ever get translated, would definitely hop in to meet these characters again.

The story was fun even though a bit disjointed.
We, as the readers, follow Song Ci, as the main character, and his struggles to get used to being a demon, and as such we do not have the grasp of the whole picture. The author themselves at three points in the book address the reader, first to explain that we, as the reader, will not see the complete plot, as we see the story through the eyes of Song Ci and he is clueless and second time, in the second part of the book, to inform us that the proper plot is only then staring. The third time is only a few chapters after the second one and it is to state that the plot for that book is done and that the rest of the plot will be explained in the sequel. At that point the reader finds out that this is the second book in the series of three and sadly that this one is the only one translated.
As much as I really liked the characters of Song Ci and Rong Bai, I really would have liked to know the whole story and not just snippets. Thus my low rating of this book.
So if you are looking for a book to just read something that is funny from time to time, but also has serious plotline and backstory and a very slow burn romance, than go ahead and read the book. You will not regret it, as the story is beautifully written and will drag you in. But if you are like me, and need to read the whole story (have the plot lines finished and properly knotted), then maybe you should just skip it, unless you know how to read Chinese.
(Note to self: maybe I should learn Chinese, just maybe.....)

Hilarious, adventure-packed with a cute couple!

I love the dynamic between MC and ML. The MC, our utterly loveable dork, is shameless, naive and timid (for most of the series). His character growth will make you fall for him even more.

The humor is on point! Seriously, FDCM has some of the best laugh-out-loud moments. That said, there are some angsty and gut-wrenching moments that will definitely make you cry.

As I love the romance between MC & ML, I wish we have more time to explore them as a couple together. While the last chapter + extra are lovely (and smutty), it feels as if we skip forward the healing part for my two babies, considering their past separation & suffering.

Same thing for some of the side couples. The ending for couples in the first two arcs feels inconclusive. They deserve an extra IMO. As for the other side characters, I hope there will be screentime for them in the third installment.

Since FDCM is written as the second part of a trilogy, the ending is not fully wrapped up. While I love the first two arcs of the series, the second part of FDCM is quite messy. It feels cramped with new characters' introduction and set-up for the third installment. The ending feels rushed, with several plot points left unresolved.

Conclusion
Despite the inconsistency, I love FDCM for its hilarity, romance, loveable cast (main + side characters), and complex world-building. I will definitely read the prequel & sequel when fully translated!

Where to start with this one...I have some mixed feelings to be honest.

The idea of the story was good, though the writer failed to deliver probably due to lack of experience. I've read a translation, so I don't know if the editing failed there or if the original novel was just like that.

Mind you, these issues could be considered minor, but a couple of examples here:

- One the same page, you have the word "mirror" 7 times.
- Some sentences could have been better. For instance: "He started to feel so weak in the knees he almost fell to his knees".

Things like that.

The character descriptions could have been better too, not everything is "sparkling eyes" and "brilliant smile" (not verbatim, but you get the gist).

Last but not least, the arcs after the time-travel felt rushed.. it felt like the author couldn't wait to just be done with it. The ending left a lot to be desired too, and don't even get me started on loose ends or the bootstrap paradox the author never explained.

Overall, it was a fun read but it had the potential to be so much more.

LOVED this one! The plot is really well linked with not only the main but super nice secondary characters!

The Main character was tricked 3 years ago to drink from this fruit that was in reality blood from The demon King. He became then half demon, so he travel all this time looking for The demon King so maybe he can fix him to be human again.

So finally he ends up meeting a very powerful Daoist monk who tells him that he can help him to go to the Demon Realm (were The demon king is)

Soooo the funny part, this Daoist monk is THE DEMON KING HIMSELF ( is not spoiler, is pretty clear from the start) but he is totally oblivious all the time and make really good comedy relief!

Of course, with the days go on, their conexxion goes more farther than a simple friendship :P

Honestly this story made me feel so good. The plot is well written and the main characters are the absolute sweetest and the best soulmates, I could rant over them for hours; the descriptions about the way they looked at each other were so cute my heart swelled ;;;
The English translation is also really good and I liked the writing style a lot, even when it was a bit repetitive. This is certainly not a masterpiece but I enjoyed it so much I don't even care, it's still a really good book.
If you want to read a funny, light, interesting and heartwarming (and sometimes dark) story, I think you'll like FDCM.

Interesting......
I'm aware that this is only the second novel based on a world in a different novel.
You don't need to read the first book to understand this one as they are basically standalones.
In saying that, Fox Demon Cultivation Manual was a good book, albeit with flaws, enjoyable, funny and thought provoking at times. it deserves the hype.
However, the ending was so rushed and left little to no closure on the reader's part.
I'm aware that there is another standalone novel that will answer the unanswered but it still was frustrating to read the last chapter, knowing that it was the last chapter, but not at all feeling anything like a last chapter.

The story opened with light hearted horror and lots of comedic scenarios surrounding the main character who starts thigh hugging his main lead counterpart very early in the storyline. The first half of the novel was action filled as the MC follows his golden thigh to collect treasures in different locations. They reach their last destination and the novel loses its spark as fast as the golden thigh loses his attractiveness becoming an insecure clingy nymphomaniac in the last 30 chapters. Time jumps made it more convoluted further degrading the ending chapters. It’s a 3/5 for the first half and for the funny likable characters in it.

The summary totally baited me. I honestly thought this was going to be a more light-hearted type of story, but the backstories crushed me. I'll admit I was a bit thrown off by the slow pacing in the first 50 chapters, but once I got further into the book, everything started to make sense. The development was good. Some arcs were confusing as hell and maybe a bit of the ending, but overall this book is really great. The romance is beautiful, the side characters are loveable and I would definitely read this again for RongSong.

I'm still trying to decide how i feel about this. The story was super different than the summary, so i feel a bit lied to? Overall it was fun, the plot was nice and the characther were cativating enough to make me want to know what was going on with them, if only the story didn't have time skips/travel and so many dream realms, they made the damn timeline so messy it gave me a headache. Plus the fact the author used courtesy name's to side characther and the book had many many side characters and more than one side characther had multiple identitys, do i look like a joke?

The amount of info-dumps in this book are not normal, but baffling enough the novel doesn't seem complete. I mean at the end I found out that this was a series but that isn't an excuse, this book has so many plot holes! Either way I liked the main couple, they're so cute together even if their relationship wasn't explored that much.
Tbh would have prefered one long novel divided in arcs than many separated novels where only this one is translated...

cute and chill, but with some good good tragic backstories.

thoughts:

-i liked all the arcs, but sometimes i was just like ???? hello what's happening????

-i love the main and side characters. they're great, they really made the story

-like song ci is so shameless... rong bai is so soft towards him and him only... i love them...

-ending was ??????

-i need to read the rest of the series for it to make more sense. but it was good!

i know there are a lot of mixed feelings surrounding this novel. most people either hate it, or they love it. in terms of literature, im not hard to please. if i enjoyed reading it, 5 stars!!!

sure, the plot might be a little messy and the side characters may overshadow the protagonists at times, but i for one could not get this book out of my head since i finished reading it a couple months back.

4.8/5!! i enjoyed it a lot :DD
