I'm the Last Face You'll Ever See

Rate this book
Take a terrifying look inside the twisted mind of a serial killer in this modern day nod to Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho.

Sean’s nightmares seem psychically connected to Stephen, a loner who lives in the back of the building. After several grisly murders including a dead body reveal like no other, Sean and best friend Anna set out to expose him as the killer despite warnings from Anna’s boyfriend Danny.

The killer speaks directly to the reader and lives by the chilling words he tells his victims, “I’m the last face you’ll ever see, so you will love me forever.”

Had I known that the genre of this was horror ... I might not have selected it to read and review. That being said, once I did start reading, it was hard to put down. Fair warning .. if you read at night like I do .. make sure the doors are locked and the light are on.

Horrifying murders in an old apartment building have the residents on tenterhooks. The first killing is gory ... graphic ... guaranteed to make the reader's skin to crawl. But it doesn't stop there... more bodies will fall.

The killer believes that the women he has killed loved him, wanted him, played hard to get although they probably never met him, never dated him, wanted nothing to do with him if they did know him. What he says .... I'm the last face you will ever see ... and you will love me forever.

It's dark and gritty and utterly gruesome. The plot is designed to keep the reader glued to the pages. The many, varied characters are skillfully drawn. There are twists and turns and ups and downs that lead in one direction, then another. The suspects are as many and varied as the number of characters. The ending was unexpected ....

Ok. So I have to warn you. If you’ve read anything of Matt’s, you should know his stuff is horror. If you haven’t, then be warned now. His stuff is so very well written, but it is horror and it is very dark. This one also needs to come with trigger warnings. I don’t want to go into too much detail so I don’t give anything away, but there is neglect, physical and sexual abuse in this and it leads to something else. I can’t say what that part is because it will give stuff away.
Sean and his best friend, Anna, are woken at the sound of screams one night. Only to find out, that the newest neighbor has disappeared. When Sean goes to unclog the garbage chute, Anna helps him and they discover where the body went and what happened to it. And they are all horrified. They have a feeling the all know who it is, but how do they prove it? On top of it, Sean has been sleepwalking and having dreams of fog and dark clouds and watching the killer making his kills. He and Anna, after the latest murder, make a plan to capture the guy for the police, only it doesn’t turn out the way they hoped. It actually turns into Anna’s worst nightmare as she realizes what has really been going on, to a point. And things turns horrid.
I’ve seen the movie Psycho, and let me tell you, this is more horrifying than that. Matt definitely has his horror down pat. He gets you hooked so much into the book that you can’t put it down, even if/when you’re biting your nails and wanting to hide your face like watching a scary movie. But you just have to keep reading. It’s everything a horror should be. It’s dark, twisted, scary and action to make it what it is. This one is just perfect as a horror. The twist in this one will shock you. But when you find out the twist, everything begins to make perfect sense. Except the ending. That one has me a little thrown. When you read it, you’ll understand. And believe me, if you love horrors, you need to read this. I was completely shocked. I had a inkling something wasn’t right with the killer and the way things were happening, but I had no idea it would turn out the way it did. It’s an awesome written book.
I really wish I could say more, but it would really give so much away. Just know that if you like all the murder mystery/horror stuff, this is the perfect book for you. Another great book.

This is one of the worst books I've ever had the displeasure of reading. The only reason I didn't DNF it is because it's short and easy to read, but trust me that is NOT a positive.

Besides being a written cliche (murderer that talks at his dead Mother while also inner monologuing about why what he's doing is right and asks God for forgiveness, characters that immediately suspect one individual just because he's weird, neighbors that act strange including one that is hinted at playing a bigger part later but isn't, and lastly a reveal of the killer that makes NO logical sense) this is one of the most repetitive, poorly written pieces of fiction I have ever experienced.

Let me give a few examples below:

He doesn't just kill, he relishes the kill. He doesn't just kill, he lives for the kill.(This is literally the same sentence written differently back to back.)

There is no funeral to go to for *Redacted for spoilers* because she is being buried in Ohio, where she is from.

It pulls the blade from its finger and rubs the blood between thumb and finger, smiling into the mirror as it puts its finger to its lips... (He repeats a lot of words so much they start to sound nonsensical.)

And my absolute favorite: A low, dark fog begins to move down the hill into the graveyard. The fog comes quickly, a huge billowing dark gray dog bank, rolling in, covering the graveyard. When he looks back at *Redacted for spoilers*, he sees him disappear into the fog. Dark fog is everywhere. Night fog. Darkness.

There is no excuse for poor writing like this. I've read other indie authors and while not all "great" in the sense of the word, they have a firm enough grasp of writing to know that you don't repeat sentences and words on this scale. Do yourself a favor, hire an editor (which would trim 219 pages down to a crisp 100) to try and make sense of this so it's not so frustrating to read.

I don't care how bloody and violent you make your book. I'd rather time be spent on everything else to make it unique instead of another copy and paste of previous works.

If Goodreads allowed a 0 star rating, this would absolutely be one.

this is the first book I read from this autor and let me tell you that I loved it! Such a good book
with great characters that keeps you obsessed with every page since the first one. The ending of
this book.. come on! I just didn´t expect it! Can´t wait for book 2! Amazing job! definitely a must
read!

I must say it was a really good book a absolutely great story! Matt's ability to use his words to put us as the reader smack dab in the middle of the action is scary. I just kept reading and turning pages totally engrossed in what happened and what was going to happen. Just when I thought I knew who the killer was I was thrown in a totally different direction.

This book will scare the living hell out of you...but you can't put it down. So many thanks

keep writting matt you have talent

4.5 stars...A book told over a series of events leading with a murder and more, puzzling dreams, and dark shadows. Can you guess who the killer is? Brilliantly written. This had me puzzling with who it could be. One character is at the fore front of suspects but I had my doubts about him. There is a twist in thing toward the ending hmm yah I'd advise not to read this at night.. A drama filled ending mixed with sadness. Trigger warnings for horrible murder scenes included. This is not a romance at all but a mystery horror story as the title suggests.

Well, this absolutely was everything you could want in a horror story. There was blood, gore, screaming, so much intrigue, and a twist you won't see coming.

This downtown apartment building has seen better days. Each apartment contains someone with a bit of a story, an interesting quirk, and the ability to be the killer. When a string of gruesome murders and a fire hit the tiny building, the tenants are worried for their lives. Luckily, the supervisor, Sean, is in charge. He knows everyone and knows the building like the back of his hand.

Once I was deep into the story and in the killer's head, it was edge of my seat nail-biting. I kept guessing at who would be next, who the killer was, why they were taking out this specific building. The character arc of the killer was so deep and wide, I almost sympathized with him!

You want to read mystery and horror look no further this book has it all...
And just add a bit of blood!

Extremely well written , when reading I could imagine everything what was happening very visual.
There is a twist and a question , who is doing these dreadful deeds ?

All the characters have substance they all are extremely likable.
They each have a story will they all remember it ?
So very worth five stars...

Jennifer does what’s best for herself, she’s waited long enough for boyfriend, Gavin, to commitment. She’s headed for San Francisco where she hopes life will be better.

Sean DeGaza is the manager at the Setab apartments. After a late night hook-up, there’s a terrifying scream. He starts getting calls from tenants and his friend Anna and boyfriend Danny. Even though the police have been called, Sean makes a decision to enter Jennifers apartment, with Danny in toe. But they see nothing unusual except for Jennifers keys still being in the apartment. With not enough evidence there’s nothing the police can do.

Both Sean and Anna are overly concerned about Jennifers disappearance. But life goes on as a building manager. Sean still has to take care of things. Adi, one of the tenants has complained about the trash chute being backed up. As Sean and Anna make another visit to Jennifers apartment, Sean decides to look into the trash issue from there. With the blockage below, Anna makes an attempt to loosen the blockage and what she finds is horrific. But once again, there’s not enough evidence for the police.

Sean is scared, he starts having continuous nightmares of a dark shadow man and a fog. He suspects a few odd tenants like: weird Mrs. Gordon and her son Norman but the one that stands out the most is Stephen. Stephen resides in a more secluded area of the building and Sean has heard strange noises coming from the apartment. He goes to Anna and Danny but there’s still nothing he can do. Sean continues to have the nightmares and no matter how much, he, Anna and Danny try to make sense of it all, the nightmares continue. Sean starts to believe he may even have a psychic connection with Stephen because he is sure he is the killer. Things get even more terrifying at the apartments. Anna and Sean, need to put an end to the horror and come up with a plan to catch the diabolical Stephen in the act once and for all. Will they succeed or will it be the end for them both?

As Matt Converse does, he’s created another dark theme story of raw terror. The plot itself is very psychological as the author takes the reader deep into the mind of the killer and Sean’s nightmares. The story also brings out memories of a dysfunctional family and covers different categories of abuse.

“I’m the Last Face You’ll Ever See” is a riveting story, that’s twisted, and definitely get’s the three G’s: gruesome, gory and gritty. Converse certainly holds nothing back when it comes to the very explicit gory details. This is another one of Matt Converse’s stories that will need to be read with all the lights on!

There's a new twisted mind in town and his name is Matt Converse.
This is a dark, twisted, tale of mystery, murder and, well, read it and you'll see. If you are a fan of the macabre, of murder mysteries that aren't just blood and gore but also mind-twisting roller-coasters, then you love this dark tale. Set in San Francisco, this story takes you through a maze of weirdness, twisting left, then right, until you reach an end that will have you breathing a sigh of relief and pride for having survived the trip. Well done.

A great horror story that'll take you on a wild ride. It's dark, twisted, and suspenseful. There's moments you'll think you've figured it out only to be taken a different way. You'll be on edge till the very end. It's a story that's mind bending and will have you questioning things. You never know what you'll get from one moment to the next and the ending is one you won't see coming. Definitely recommend.

I’m the last face you’ll ever see.

Intensely disturbing, you don’t just get a glimpse inside the mind of a serial killer you become totally immersed in it. It is by its very nature an abhorrent experience. Matt takes the central premise of Psycho and runs mayhem with it even whilst paying homage to it, he conjures up very credible and horrific scenarios, not for the faint of heart.

I hate doing this. I hate not finishing a book. I don't do it often. I usually stick with it...
After about the first two chapters I saw where this was going..
It's predictable. The author drags it out as well. This might of been a great short story but he decided to repeat things in different ways 3 or 4 times in a paragraph to make a novel out of it.
Don't recommend.

Those that gave this book 5 stars need to seriously go and read a book that is actually worthy of 5 stars! This was nonsensical, constantly repeating itself, tripe ....I only gave 1 star because of the name of the book - the only good thing about it!

As mysteries go a little predictable, but good for horror. I gave it 5 stars maybe because it's been really long since I read a horror book when it always was one of my favorite genres and I did like the story; but I have to say that this book is highly repetitive.

And we're done. Hit or miss writing (that's really bad when it's bad, and only good [not great or superb]) when it's good only carries an interesting story so far, and the rape scene was the final nail in the coffin

This was a terrible terrible book. It could have worked as a short story, maybe. But the writing is by far some of the worst I have ever subjected myself to.
