About the author

In September 2009, Professor Salim T S Al-Hassani was granted an Honorary Fellowship of the British Association for the Advancement of Science, now the British Science Association for his work to promote the scientific and technological achievements within Muslim cultures. The Honorary Fellowship of the British Science Association is a distinguished honour, conferred to date on about 90 people.

In February 2009, Professor Salim T S Al-Hassani was presented the Building Bridges Award by the Association of Muslim Social Scientists.

In 2001, Professor Salim T S Al-Hassani received the Fazlur Rahman Khan award for excellence in engineering, science and technology.

Current Position :

Salim T S Al-Hassani is an Emeritus Professor Mechanical Engineering and an Honorary Professorial Fellow at the School of Languages, Linguistics and Cultures, Faculty of Humanities, University of Manchester.

كم حزنت كثيراً وقتما أنهيت هذا الكنز...
هذا الكتاب لي معه قصة طويلة...
من بداية الصيف الماضي وأنا أبحث عنه...
ذهبت لجميع فروع مكتبة جرير ووجدته فقط باللغة الإنكليزية...
سألت متى سَيصدر بالعربية...
أخبروني "ربما لن يصدر...
أو انتظر 3 أو 4 أشهر"...
دخلت موقع الكتاب...
وعلمت أن دار النشر هي مجلة ناشيونال جيوغرافيك الأمريكية...
فتبينتُ بالتأكيد من سيترجم الكتاب هي ناشيونال جيوغرافيك العربية...
فأرسلت رسالة عبر الفيس بوك...
أخبرهم بأني أريد الكتاب...
فجاء الرد بأنهم لا علم لهم...
"وخذ الإيميل الرسمي وما تريد أرسل لهم"...
فأرسلت لهم ولم يستجب أحد...
فدخلت موقع المجلة وأخذت الرقم...
فاتصلت بهم إلى أبو ظبي...
أجابوني بأن "الكتاب موجود بالعربية...
إلّا أنه حصّري فقط في الإمارات"...
ومتى سيأتي إلى السعودية؟...
"عليك الاتصال بالموزع في بلدك"...
فاتصلتُ بالموزع...
أخبرني بأنه "عليك الانتظار أكثر...
ولكن الشيء المؤكد...
بأنه سيأتي هذا الكتاب لا محالة"...
مرّ الشهر والشهران وقد نسيت الكتاب...
وقبل اسبوع ذهبت لجرير... فوجدته...
واشتريته أخيراً...
فرحة لا توصف عندما وجدته بعد بحث دام اكثر من 4 اشهر :) :)

بعد قرائتي لهذا الكنز علمت حقاً من نحن...
استشعرت بأننا كنا للعلم منارة... وبنينا المجد بجدارة...
ليس هناك علم من علوم العالم إلا ووضع أسلافنا بصمتهم فيه...
بدئاً من البيت والعادات اليومية وانتهائاً بالكون والواسع...
لو كنت مُشرّعاً لأوجبت قراءة هذا الكتاب على كل المسلمين في كل أنحاء العالم...

خواطر كثيرة تدور في رأسي حول هذا الكتاب... إلا أن الزمن ليس من صالحي... لذلك سأكتفي بقول:...
5 نجوم قليلة على هذا الكتاب... فهو يستحف منّا أكثر...

حين تلمح كتابًا وتشعر أن به كنز معرفيّ؛
هذا ما حدث لي حين لمحته على مكتب إحدى زميلاتي فبادرت لقراءته بنفس اليوم.

موسوعة مذهلة؛ جديرة بالاقتناء، جديرة بأن تكون بكل بيت عربي مسلم؛
مع التحفظ على أيّ حديث له عن الموسيقى وما يتعلق بها من بشر أو آلات؛
فما يحرمه الإسلام لن يزينه بعيني أي إنسان.

مع ملاحظة أنّ اعجابي بالكتاب والتشجيع على اقتنائه لا يعني موافقتي أو نسياني لمخالفات بعض علماء العرب العقدية الذين ورد ذكرهم هنا؛
أمثال ابن سينا ونصير الدين الطوسي والمأمون وعلاقته بتعذيب أحمد بن حنبل في قصة خلق القرآن.
إنما استحسنت جهودهم العلمية وإثراءهم بتحسين الحياة الدنيا وفقط.

عندما هممتُ بتسجيل اقتباسات من الكتاب وجدتُ أن عند كل اختراع توجد فقرة على الأقل تحتاج التدوين؛
جال ببالي أنه يتحدث عن ١٠٠٠ اختراع فهل سأكتب ١٠٠٠ اقتباس!

We got this book after driving down to New York for a weekend to see the 1001 Inventions exhibit at the New York Hall of Science. I can't say enough good things about it!

As a Muslim and as the daughter of an Arab who always taught me to be proud of my heritage, I did know that Muslims are responsible for all sorts of advances in math and science. But this book went beyond algebra and astrolabes and taught me lots of things that I didn't know. It covers math, science, art/architecture, food, politics... and the book itself is beautiful, a great coffee-table book.

Due to an unfortunate combination of politics and the way our news media works, so many people have inaccurate or limited pictures of Islam and Muslims. Books like this are important to remind us of positive influences that Islam has had on the world, and that today's Muslims are heirs to a brilliant civilization. We have an obligation to appreciate that and live up to it in our own lives now.

٥ نجوم تضعها وأنت مغمض العينين ..
جميل جميل جميل وعظيم ورائع ..
هذه الموسوعة من الموسوعات التي أهيب بك أخي القارئ أن لا تخلو منها مكتبتك ، إنها من الموسوعات الجميلة التي تثري المكتبة العربية والإسلامية ، كما أنها من الكتب القليلة التي تتناسب مع جميع الأذواق والأعمار ، فإن مل القارئ القراءة فالصور خير مستراح ، وإن أراد الاستزادة من المعلومات فالكتاب غني وثري بل ومتنوع في المعلومات وفي طريقة عرضها ..
هذا الكتاب (تغذية بصرية + إشباع معلوماتي) مما يجعلك تغلقه وقد أشبعت حواسك جميعا ولم يبق إلا الدخول في الصورة واستنشاق رائحة الأماكن وهذه أرجو أن يتوصلوا إلى تقنيتها قريبا :)
حسنا الكتاب كموضوع أعتقد أنه واضح فهو يتحدث عن كل الاختراعات الإسلامية والقوانين العلمية الإسلامية التي بني عليها اختراعات في العصر الحديث مما يجعلك تصل لنتيجة أن جل إن لم يكن كل ما نحن فيه من تطور وتقدم ما كان لولم تكن هذه الأسس التي بناها العلماء المسلمون ، ولكن وكالعادة فأنا لست ممن يتعصب ويتحزب لكل ما يخص المسلمين بل أعترف وأؤكد بأحقية النعيم الذي يعيشه الغرب وذلك أنهم تعلموا الدرس جيدا بينما كنا منغمسين إما في الترف أو النزاعات مما جعل الحضارة تنسل من بين أيدينا ليأخذوها ليس غصبا بل أحقية ولله في كونه سنن من أخذها أخذ بحظه من هذه الحياة ..
نعود للكتاب مرة أخرى بالإضافة لما ذكرت من مميزات فإنه احتوى في آخره على ذكر المصادر التي اعتمد عليها وذلك إن أردت الاسترسال أكثر والإسهاب في معرفة هذا التاريخ العظيم ، كما تحدث في بضعة صفحات عن أبرز الشخصيات العلمية الإسلامية بشكل مختصر ، وتحدث أيضا بشكل مختصر عن علماء أوروبيين استفادوا بشكل كبير من العلماء المسلمين بل وبعضهم كان يتكلم العربية ويعلم بها ، ثم ألحق خريطة زمانية راااااائعة وهي من أجمل الإضافات في هذا الكتاب على شكل خط يمثل الزمن وما فوق الخط يمثل تاريخ المسلمين وأبرز الأحداث بناء على الترتيب التاريخي وتحت الخط يمثل تاريخ أوروبا وبالتأكيد تجد ثلاثة أرباع الخط الأول كان للمسلمين الحظ الأوفر منه ثم في الربع الأخير برز الأوربيون وكان أغلب ما برزوا به مبنيا على ما وصل إليه المسلمون على مدى الخط الزمني ، ثم بعد ذلك وضع خريطة جغرافية ليبين لك أبرز الأماكن التي وجدت فيها هذه الاختراعات وتجد فيها (دمشق - مصر - تونس - الأندلس ... إلخ)
ثم ختم بتعريف سريع بالأسماء والأماكن والمصطلحات التي وردت في الكتاب بشكل عام ثم بعد ذلك الفهرس بحسب الحروف وكان هذا هو ختام الكتاب..
كما ذكرت الكتاب ثري جميل غني مناسب لجميع الفئات والأعمار أرجوك لا تفوت قراءته .

أؤمن أنّ علينا تضمين محتوى هذا الكتاب في مناهجنا التعليمية ، أو على الأقل إدراج نبذة بسيطة عن دور المسلمين في تطوير كل علم ندرسه في مدارسنا ..

It's a treasure, a journey .... whatever you call it you will not be just. these awesome medieval islamic paintings, and these great HQ pictures and Colours gave this book a Soul.So you could see our ancestors in your own eyes ...alive.

الكتاب يتكلم عن الاختراعات اللتي اكتشفت من قبل العلماء المسلمين و اثرهم في علم الطب و الفلك و الهندسه
علماء مثل جابر بن حيان أبو الكمياء \ ابن سينا في الطب الاغلب يعرف اثرهم بس الكتاب شامل لعلماء اخرين ويسلط الضوء لاكتشافات كثيره

عجبني طريقه تقسيم الكتاب و الصور المستخدمه و اللوحات خدمت العمل كثير
محتواه مناسب لطالب المدرسه +10 سنين الى القارئ الأكبر

واحد من اهم الكتب الي لازم يقراها كل مسلم معاصر او غير مسلم حاب يعرف نبذه عن العصر الذهبي الاسلامي
لطالما كنت فخوره لكوني مسلمه فالفخر فطرة فيني

I have read this book when I was in college, I remember it was too heavy for me to take it home from my College library, so I would go to the library just to read this book, but it was not a book that you can finish that quickly (it's BIG). It was amazing, I found out so many things, and so many inventions that we were led to believe was the invention of the western world, but really were not. Not just that, I learned a lot of history, and at that time I was not much of a reader.
I will be reading this again.

Dr. Salim (who I personally know) has done many contributions including the 1001 Inventions museum in the U.K. which has traveled throughout the Middle East. If you missed the museum, you need to read the book.

Recently saw the museum exhibit. Bought the book because I wanted to delve deeper and learn more about what a wonderful history Muslims have had, that seems to have been forgotten, omitted, or simply unknown even to modern Muslims. The Golden Age was truly a time of higher and deeper thinking about all the complexities of life and the world around us all. This book has great illustrations and descriptions. Great historical but more personally an inspirational piece of work.

بينما كانت اوروبا في سبات عميق وفي ظلام شديد كان المسلمون يعيشون في أكثر مراحل حياتهم نورا وازدهارا ...وانت تقرأ هذا الكتاب او اقل ما يمكن ان يطلق عليه هذا "الكنز العظيم" تختلط بك المشاعر بين الحزن والحسرة على ما كنا عليه وما اصبحنا عليه ..وبين مشاعر الفخر والاعتزاز بكل هؤلاء العظماء من المفكرين المخترعين الذين اسسوا لمعظم مانراه الان اينما يحل نظرك في منزلك او في الشارع او المستشفى او الجامعه تأكد انه بدأ من عند المسلمين..كتاب عظيم يجمع كل انجازات العلماء المسلمين وتأثريهم في عالمنا وكيف بنوا الأوروبيون حضارتهم الحالية ع اساس ثابت وهو العالم الإسلامي ..لم ينكر العالم الغربي ذلك بل تجد علماء المسلمين موجودين هناك بين كتبهم وجامعاتهم ..لكن المحزن ان هناك الكثير منا لا يعلم عن هذا التاريخ المشرف ..هذا الكتاب يجب ان يدّرس في المدارس والجامعات الي جانب المناهج التي هي بالاصل يعود فضلها الي هؤلاء المسلمون العظماء الذين قدروا الإسلام حق قدره ...كتاب عظيم انصح به وبشده

I was pretty amazed at the number of ideas and inventions which were improved or spread to Europe from Asia and Africa or improved within the Muslim empires of old. Simple things we take for granted, for example, coffee, were spread through the Muslims. From the medical instruments designed by Al-Zahrawi, recognized by 19th century Western medical historians as being at the forefront of surgical innovation, Ibn Sina's (or known as Avicenna in the West) Canon or Al-Qanun and his Book of Cure, Arabic maps which Columbus studied, the intriguing alchemical experiments carried out by Jabir Ibn Hayyan (or known as Geber in the West), perfume recipes recorded in Al-Kindi's Book of the Chemistry of Perfume and Distillations which eventually spread to France, Hassan Al-Rammah's purification procedures for potassium nitrate to make exploding gunpowder to the amazing feats of naval exploration by Admiral Zheng He, a Chinese Muslim, this book outlines the history and tells the stories of these historical names and what they contributed to science, architecture, agriculture, astronomy, etc. Truly a valuable history book.

I would give it 4 stars for the tremendous effort which the author dedicated to make this book.

the book's quality is awesome, it covers every aspect of the islamic/or arabic civilization, it's informatively very dense and accurate, un-biased historically to some degree. the illustrations is well made and enlightening specially when showing how mechanical machines work.

but despite all these compliments I was not satisfied with the book. the book gets very dense and detailed that it becomes absolutely boring to read, I even left off reading 2 complete chapters(market-town) owing to that. and at a lot of times when the book starts describing shapes of some mechanical/medical gadgets without illustrations using only words I totally get lost.

ignoring these later disadvantages It's good.

كتاب جميل جدًا ، كنز عظيم حقاً .. عند قراءتي للكتاب فرحت وحزنت بنفس الوقت .. فرحت كثيرًا بما فعلوه ، وحزنت اكثر بما اضعناه .. في كل علم من العلوم قدموا الشيء الكثير .. كل شيء تقريبًا نستخدمه الآن من اختراع المسلمين ، او تتمه لما فعلوه .. الكتاب اشبه بمجله ويوجد به الكثير من الصور ( وانا لا احب هذا النوع كثيرًا ) لكنني استمتعت به بشده ، انصحكم به.

تخيل زمانًا ومكانًا يعمل فيه أناس من مختلف البلدان والثقافات والاديان والخلفيات ليكتشفوا معارف جديده ويفهموا المزيد عن العالم ويخرجوا بابتكارات جديده يتداولونها مع بعضهم البعض بمنتهى التفتح والحريه. عالم لغته السائده هي العلم وهي لغه تستخدم لخير الجميع. عالم يعتمد فيه التقدم على تداول الافكار والعمل في إطار من التعاون.
لقد وجد ذات يوم مثل هذا الزمان والمكان. كان هذا منذ وقت طويل جدًا، ربما طواه النسيان.

هذا الكتاب مميز جدا للبداية منه لفهم الحضارة الإسلامية، كان البروفيسور سليم الحسني وفريق العمل معه موفقون في تبسيط الحضارة الإسلامية بشكل مذهل، لازلت أوصي به لكل أصدقائي وطلابي كبداية للمبتدئين، وحتى المتخصيين وطلاب الدراسات يمكنهم الاطلاع على المواضيع المطروحة في الكتاب، فهذا الكتاب يضع بين يديك ملخصات مميزة عن أفكار عملاقة يمكنك البدأ منها، أوصي بهذا الكتاب وبشدة لكل من يريد مدخلا للحضارة الإسلامية.

This book is a treasure must be possessed by every muslim family especially in this era of science and respect to scientists. this book documents the period when religion and religious ideologies did not govern every single aspect of people's lives. Its a proof that once upon a time people actually left religious differences behind for the sake of making scientific revolutions and changing the world. I am really glad there is a version of this book for school-age children to learn from.
