His best friend, apprentice wizard Idun Wintermoon, is determined to save him from that terrible fate. But to do so, she must defy the head of her order, and face powers far beyond her ability. To survive, she’s going to need an ally. Luckily for her, Lissette Forlatt - a down-on-her-luck sellsword - is on the case. Together, they’ll brave worse than the elements and rogue mages in their quest to save Njal. What they discover might shake the jarldom to its core.

Read for SPFBO, this is only my personal opinion, group verdict might differ widely!
Bone Traders by Rachel Ford is a quick, easy and fun read.
We have a young apprentice mage, who goes against her mentor's will, setting out to rescue her giant friend, who's been kidnapped.
There's quite some clumsiness which adds humour to the adventure, and had me well entertained.
There's a nice little sapphic rep in here as well, but just a tiny dash, not a major part of the story.
If you're looking for something deep and thought provoking, this is not it. If you're however on the lookout for something light and entertaining, a quick bite between the big tomes, this is well worth a look!

This would've been a book I'd have liked as a younger teen. Has a nice message that some things that you consider important in the grand scheme of things may not be worth anything without friends. Two MCs both flawed which was good; each one's strengths are the others weakness so they balance nicely. Writing was on the easier side so whipped through the whole book fairly quickly.
If you like your fantasy heroes slightly bumbling but good hearted and with decent potential (and gay) this series will do you right. It's fun and wholesome, and devoid of relationship angst.
Good start to a WLW fantasy series, featuring an apprentice mage, and a sword for hire, who wind up together - tracking down some nefarious people bent on harming their giant friend for his magical bones.
First off I want to say this book is enjoyable I recommend you read it You won't regret it.
if you don't have issues with a simple world building so to speak not that what this author has done in this book is not good because it is. But if you want some game of thrones kind of World building or Lord of the rings kind of world building I don't personally think it's that detailed but it does have a set balance and with multiple books in this series something tell me that the world will eventually expand for our characters or at least I hope so But just because it doesn't have a big world building does not mean that it lacks in detail don't want to get that twisted with the story has going for it is a very simple easy understanding of mechanics It kind of reminds me almost like Harry Potter a little bit with the magical academy school. to there's politics involved that we really only got a taste of it a little bit so I look forward to seeing that develop as well because it is a part of these two women's lives.
2 it's kind of a mix of mystery investigation with supernatural or magical element involved which is a very interesting twist set in a time of medieval times with that combination of magic we have bounty hunters. There's so much things in this book that we only scratch the surface of and I get the feeling we're going to learn more and more about this world as it continues on and other books.
We have evil witches and wizards we have not so good humans So it's not just the magical creatures that are bad creatures or anything like that or I feel like it's very balanced everyone has the capability of doing something bad.
But yeah the world building is just it is really simple is really good it gives you enough information without overwhelming you or trying to give you multiple names and places and new language to understand and that's what I like about this book and the author's other books when it comes to her developing her world She does not bog you down with a lot of unnecessary information and simple is sometimes the best because with her style she can add more to the world in the lore as she decides to continue to write in either world that she does and that's why I like about her series in general it's an interesting method to use
another thing I liked in this book that does stand out compared to her other series is that in this book we get two point of views one from the the mage who is the love interest as well the other from the bounty Hunter who is also a love interest both women meet is not love at first sight they do crush on each other but it's not the romance is not the forefront of this book so they're not lovey-dovey and over each other or anything like that it's focused on what's the problem that these two women want to solve and I absolutely love the fact that we got both of their point of view cuz I understand them both I understand what they coming from their trials their feelings their even insecurities that they have The backstory is really detailed and I look forward to learning more about each woman's backstory they both come from different size of the tracks. That's the only thing I'm going to say on that because I don't want to spoil it for newcomers that like myself who discover this author and now I'm going on a bench read if all of her series that I can get my hands on.
I do wish the point of views was done more her other series that she has on her profile for me I personally love it when I can understand both of the main characters especially when they're not only the main characters but love interest to one another so I like that she did this a little bit differently So that's why I started with this one I did do another review on one of her other stories but I just started with this one because I found out of the two points of views.
This book at the end sets this up with what the future books will look like get a little bit of information on what is going to happen next as far as what the characters are preparing to do going forward and I like it I look forward to it it's I think the second book from what I've read in the comments is definitely going to be a big test for everyone going forward and it's really going to set the tone for the remaining of the rest of the books coming after.
Another thing I want to point out is that any newcomers that are coming in I would say this to you Yes this is a standalone work meaning that the issue that happened in this book is contained in this book each book has it own case for my understanding therefore each situation could be resolved in each book by itself but there is a chance you will miss out on character growth in character development even maybe some world building that probably was explained It might not be re-explained in the next book So for that reason I suggest you start from the beginning You won't regret it it's a good book her humor hasn't really came out to play just yet so I didn't have a like laughed out moments or anything like that but I know she can be pretty good with the humor.
One of my only complaints I have and this is a personal pet pee for me The only thing I was disappointing about was the character Liss who is the warrior I didn't get a chance to really see her skills heard about them from the other characters point of view but I didn't get to see her in action from her point of view at all and that was the only disappointing thing for me I love hand in hand combat or any physical combat in general and I really wanted to see that so hopefully going forward I really get to see her shine. One other thing I do want to mention that she does show other skill sets that she has outside of physically fighting which is good and I enjoyed those skill sets that she did show but I definitely want to see physical fighting as well not just hear about it
As for Idun we did get to see her show off a little bit her weaknesses and what she's good at especially in a situation that I won't spoil but and that's perfectly fine I look forward to seeing her grow and develop as the story goes on.
But outside of that if you love fantasy badass women, magic women, women with a sword and a school that kind of reminds me of Harry Potter but not quite has it own flare to it and slowly developed world building cuz I really think the world is going to open up as the story continues as the books continue then this is the book if you want simple formula that works doesn't complicate things You're not scratching your head cuz you just got overwhelmed This is the book and so I reckmen everyone that likes this kind of stuff and give it a try if you have Kindle you don't even have to pay for anything Kendall takes care of it cuz you pay Kindle LOL but I don't think anyone who likes those things will be disappointed
This was fun to read. In some ways it’s a typical fantasy adventure but with its own twists. The story is told in alternating first person. We start out with Idun, a mage student who unintentionally harmed her teacher. She’s worried that she’s going to be kicked out of mage school. Her best friend, Njal, a giant and a mage, is missing. Then we meet Liss, who it feels like we spend most of the time with. Liss is a freelance sellsword, like a mercenary soldier, only she’s honest. Liss approaches Knut, the sheriff of the area for work.
They both end up looking for Njal, even though Idun knows it’s the end of her dream of being a mage. Despite initial mistrust, the women realize they need to work together. They each use their strengths to try to rescue Njal. Of course, as in all adventure novels, things and people are not what they seem nor do events go smoothly. That creates an exciting and dangerous adventure, followed by some revelations and a cute romance amid more misunderstandings. It’s a fun adventure story and I hope to read more about Idun and Liss.
Wonderful fantasy world. I really enjoyed the adventure. Lots of fun character's mages, giants, sellswords. Mages and apprentices and of course they don't do as told and things never go as expected. Definitely worth a read.
I volunteered to read an ARC copy of this book. This is my honest opinion.
Our heroine tends to chaff at the rules, particularly when they stand in the way of helping a friend. But she may have bitten off more than she can chew and a little help goes a long way.
This is book one of this series.
This is something of a high fantasy story with magic and fantastic races, but it is also more than that. These things are just the background, albeit and very well detailed and put together world, in which our characters interact. The characters are the stars of the show and they are stars indeed. Well crafted with good back stories that grow over time, I really enjoyed them one and all. Our two heroines are front and center and I enjoyed their banter along the journey. I am definitely looking forward to seeing more of them in future books.
Highly recommended.
I received an ARC from StoryOrigin for review purposes.
for starters, the narrator was out of this world. Fabulous job. What did I dislike the most that I have to wait to get book 2. This book had a great plot and story. the author jumped right in to action & packed it with adventure. The world building was done quite well to where I was not bored by it but actually enjoyed it, and the characters were very well written. This book was given to me by a story origin. To read voluntarily my opinions and views are my own. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for an epic fantasy book. With a great story it’s well written it draws you in quickly, which i personally enjoy very much! once i set down and had A chance to listen/read how ever you choose to put it, it was a was a book I was not able to stop once I started it was that good! I highly recommend this read and look forward to reading the next one in the series.
The book have made a great impression on me as a really quality piece of Fantasy. While the plot is classic and safe - black is black and white is white - the story flows effortlessly. The reader’s got immersed into its magic.
The characters - humans, mages and giants - are all very human, like close friends, and one falls in love with Idun, Liss and Njál as the story goes on. And it makes the reader to thirst for more, to meet the characters once again.
I liked the brisk pace of the story and absence of no-nothing episodes. I’m not going to reveal a word of a plot, which kept me awake for three nights in a row. So, just go and have the pleasure of discovering it yourself. And I am already waiting for the Book 2 to appear.
**** SPOILER ALERT **** Ford introduces a brand new series in "Bone Traders: Sellswords & Spellweavers, Book 1" The author does a fantastic job, as usual, of world building and character development while they weave a tapestry of a tale balancing exposition and action. Q: Will Idun be able to keep studying at the University? Q: Will Idun be able to rescue her friend? Q: Who is behind the kidnappings of the giants? A: Grab this book and find out! I highly recommend this entertaining page turner and I look forward to more books in the series to come. In the interest of transparency: I was given a review copy of this book and I am voluntarily sharing this review. It is my own honest opinion.
SAPPHIC BOOK BINGO: not a romance, out of your comfort zone, non-human, unusual job, possibly other categories
Idun and Lissette meet while both are trying to find a missing giant, Njal, who's also Idun's best friend. She's an apprentice wizard that snuck away from the wizard university, and Lissette is a sword for hire (sellsword) tasked with finding Njal. It is suspected that he's been taken by Bone Traders, people that sell the bones of dead magical beings. Together, their skills help them discover a greater plot, and even more giants that had been taken. Its a light-hearted fantasy adventure with the very early stages of a romance.
Audiobook: I was entertained by this book which was the first experience I have had with this author. I admired the worldbuilding. I felt that the use of magic was like icing on a cake and that it made the story better. I liked the characters especially the apprentice wizard, Idun Wintermoon, as she put loyalty to her friend above every consideration. I enjoyed all the twists and turns that moved the story forward. I thought Em Barger's narration was fun, and her performance enhanced the story's entertainment. I was given a free copy of the audiobook through StoryOrigin. I volunteered, without financial gain, to post this review which reflected my honest opinions regarding this story.
Received as a review copy, this an honest review. Idun's apprenticeship isn't going as he would like it but his friendship to Njal makes up for where he struggles. When Njal is mysteriously kidnapped, Idun is plunged into the not so secret world of bone trading; where giants are ruthlessly murdered for the use of dark magic. Against orders Idun heads off to rescue his friend with unexpected help and fierce determination to stop other giants from meeting a grizzly fate. Highly recommended for its clever and colorful world and intense ending.
I enjoyed this one! Sometimes it takes me a little bit to REALLY get into a new book or series, and it did with this one. I did enjoy it from the start, but it took me a little while totally get invested in the characters. So I think I'll enjoy book 2 more than book 1. Then again, that's normal for me! If you enjoy fantasy, I definitely highly recommend this book and the series. That said, the characters are great, well developed and relatable, and the story offers plenty of intrigue and action. And Rachel Ford's books are always easy to read, which I love! Highly enjoyable :)
Bone Traders (Sellswords & Spellweavers Book 1), my ninth read from author Rachel Ford. Another new series, imagine that. This book is so well-written & enjoyable, no matter the genre a Rachel Ford book can be counted on to be entertaining & enjoyable. I look forward to the next book in the series. "I received a free review copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
Absolutely loved this book. I read it in less than 2 days. I’ve been looking for a w/w fantasy book that was satisfying forever and nothing has really done it for me until now. This is your classic fantasy world with all the tropes and honestly that’s part of why I like it so much. The characters are likable and the book moves a pace that keeps you interested. Cant wait to read the rest in this series! Side note: (the story revolves more around the two female leads than anyone else, this specific cover is a little misleading in that, although I’ve seen other covers)
I'll add my 5 stars to the good reviews the Goodreads community have been giving this book. Great start to what looks to be a good fantasy series in the making. Strikes just the right tone, not too dark but not too light where no-one gets hurt (they get killed) Looks like a cute (and believable) little relationship between the two main characters. Maybe a little more worldbuilding would be nice, but good story - I've already gotten #2
This was rather entertaining and I'm hooked. Rachel's stories are light, playful and very straightforward, but they aren't without intrigue, which makes me like it even more, and this one wasn't different. It's the first time I read one of hers in which the MC aren't already in a established relationship, though, so I'm excited to see how things will progress between MC in the next books.
Captivating, funny, and well written. The title really says it all, a story about mages and mercenaries coming to the rescue of a friend and making new friends in the process. Oh and just the right amount (read a practically none) of political intrigue. Rachel Ford has done it again. Thanks.
peterb.bruyns@gmail.com. I'm not sure how to grade this book, this series. I'd like to give it a 3.5 but the averages should work out in the end. As to the reader, I'd say that this is a book with a specific market. It's not full of swearing, like seems common so it is a safe buy for the younger generation.
Adventure, action, mystery, maybe romance & giants & wizards & humans, oh my. An interesting world created by the author and in that world are Liss & Iden, their worlds intersecting over a crime, but maybe something positive could come out of this for them, read this great book and find out!
I really enjoyed this book. Sometimes I couldn’t tell who was speaking and needed to go back, but I was able to figure it out.
I wanted a fantasy book that had sapphic characters but wasn’t about them coming out. This book nailed that for me. The romance is more subtle, but not so subtle that it was unnoticeable.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I really enjoyed this book. The two main characters switched narrating the story (same narrator using different types of voices.) There was a lot of action, adventure, danger, fantasy, and a romance all wrapped up in this book. There's magic, fighting, kidnapping and so much more. This book has something for everyone. I can't wait to read more by this author.
I'd been stumbling through Kindle Unlimited for a week or so trying to find something that was interesting and has more the two dimensional character. And then I stumbled across this book. I enjoy the pulp feel to the story not overly serious but not ridiculous either.
This feels more like a prequel, it lacks substance and development, very linear and simplistic. I enjoyed it and it was an easy read, I like the characters and would like to read more about them, but it’s no literary masterpiece.
With a troublesome apprentice mage and a homeless and near destitute sell sword, what can you expect but mischief and trouble. All of it in the good sense too !
