Winter's Daughter

Venture into Dolmenwood!

Deep in hoary old Dolmenwood, a long-forgotten burial mound looms behind a ring of standing stones where the sinister Drune congregate. Within the tomb lie the treasures and mortal remains of the knight Sir Chyde. Folklore knows him as a hero of the wars of mortal against fairy, in ancient times, when men and women finally wrested dominion of Dolmenwood from the frigid grasp of the cruel Cold Prince.

A tempting site for those who seek to unravel the secrets of the past (or just rob tombs). But those who intrude upon the quiet sanctity of the tomb may awaken forces long dormant. Sir Chyde was secretly betrothed to a fairy princess and daughter of the Cold Prince, and their souls have waited—beyond time and death—for the day when they may be reunited.

Can your band of heroes or ne'er-do-wells unravel the riddles of the tomb of the giant-slayer?

I'm very impressed with Winter’s Daughter, a brief OSR adventure set in the world of Dolmenwood. This is my first exposure to that setting, but I hope to encounter more of it, since Gavin Norman has done a wonderful job of building a dark and magical tone for his invented world.

Seemingly inspired by Spenser's The Faerie Queene, and perhaps also by Susanna Clarke's Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, this adventure revels in the interplay between the mortal world of men and the immortal world of the fair folk. Karl Stjernberg's maps are a delight, and Norman's brief text for each encounter area is enough to set the scene, but not so comprehensive as to suppress additional creativity on the part of any game master running this scenario.

Very enjoyable to run. I read it through once, then put players through it a month later. 5 hours in two sessions. Very smooth. Traps have clues so players can use their brains and gaming skill to avoid or use to their advantage. Made everyone feel smart and accomplished. The flavor has a bit of the absurd, much like the fairy tales this author draws from. It feels familiar and unique at once.
