A New Shadowrun Short Story! Most Awakened folks in the Sixth World have Mentor Spirits to help them navigate the vast, often confusing world of magic. Many times, the mage chooses a spirit that compliments them, and can help them out in tough situations. And then there’s Jimmy Kincaid. Kincaid’s never been one for taking the easy road, and to say his life is complicated is like saying water’s wet. And when a simple trace job leads to a nest of Humanis thugs that have captured a metahuman hostage, well the voice of his Mentor Spirit isn’t whispering peace and goodwill in the P.I.’s ear. Because Kincaid’s Mentor Spirit is Adversary…and Adversary just wants to see the world burn… Will Jimmy resist his mentor’s siren call of death and destruction…or give in to those darker instincts and just level the entire place?
Russell ("Rusty" when he's not working) got started in writing as a freelancer for wargames like Warmachine, and since then has contributed to dozens of projects including fan-favorite fiction in Shadowrun and writing the international award-winning PC game Satellite Reign.
His most noteworthy work has been for the Shadowrun role-playing game and associated properties, and in more recent years he's become a regular contributor to the universes of BattleTech and Warhammer 40,000, as well.
During his career he's spilled some ink for a wide variety of genres and games, including Vampire 20th Anniversary, Earthdawn, Mutants & Masterminds, Gangs of the Undercity, multiple video games, and more! By working for Shadowrun, BattleTech, and Earthdawn, he's finished the old-school FASA trifecta, and is as such officially unstoppable.
I love Jimmy. I think most of his fans must. He stands up for what’s right when he wants to. He admits when what he does is wrong and does it anyway. You can feel Jimmy in this one like his other appearances. Like his other appearances it leaves you wanting more. Thanks to the author.
This was a good short story. I haven't read any other Shadowrun fiction to compare it with, but my Shadowrun game has been canceled due to the pandemic and I wanted a taste of that world. It was definitely worthwhile.
Finding out there was a new Kinkaid story made my day. It was short, but fun, and gave us insight to where his story will be going.
I deeply hope that Zimmerman is allowed to finish the Shaken trilogy. I can honestly say Kincaid is my favorite Shadowrun character, and his are some of the best stories in the SR universe.
