Meadows: Boy's Love

Rate this book
Hades was an outcast amongst the Olympians. He was hated and feared, for the power he controlled transcended those of the other Gods. But the King of the Underworld has never been how he was perceived in the myths. In his castle there was an endless void that couldn’t be filled and kindness that couldn’t be expressed freely. But one day a bright red flame sparks and lights his soul ablaze. And when the smoke clears, the personification of beauty smiles upon him. The King is given a new name, a new purpose and a chance at acceptance. Within this Goddess is a shadow of meadows darker than his own. Because Persephone is meant to be his Queen.

I enjoyed reading this book despite the fact that i am not a fan of mythology. This is honestly such an incredible and well-written book. The way every scene is described is unique. The storyline is well thought-through and many scenes made me shed tears. I would definitely recommend this book.

I started the book with zero knowledge of Greek Mythology or the original story of Hades and Persephone. So, I was really excited to read this book and I was not disappointed.

Meadows of Shadow is queer retelling of the love story of Hades and Persephone. The story is written with tender emotions and beautiful words.

Story starts with bright, vibrant and innocent Goddess of vegetation Persephone, who has his heart set on meeting the ruler of Underworld, Hades, who is supposed to be the literal representation of darkness. Both are completely on the different end of the spectrum and yet their love blossoms so tenderly, transcending boundaries of heaven and hell.

I loved how gradually Hades turned from the cold and lonely ruler of the underworld to this lover who dotes on this precious being and just wants to protect him. Persy also evolves with the story from a naïve and innocent deity to a fierce lover. Their interactions with each other are so precious and I loved reading them immensely.

Whether it is Hade's dark underworld or the Persy's meadows of Emna, Maria portraits such a vivid picture that you can easily visualise their world while reading. If you enjoy word building, you'll definitely enjoy reading this book. Here is few beautiful lines from one of the heartbreaking scenes in the book.

The familiar 'pat pat' sound of Persy’s steps on the stone floor could still be heard like a dream. Instantaneously, Hades found himself in the dining room, he was unconsciously sitting on the end of the mahogany table, and he looked up from his scrolls. His hand was out as if expecting a certain Goddess to place a pair of chopsticks in his palm. The smell of freshly baked food was absent in the air and so was the weight of two small sticks he was acquainted with. So, the words mindlessly escaped his lips. "Little flowers, where are the...?"

To be honest, I wasn't expecting the book to end on a cliffhanger. But now. I'm looking forward to what happens to the "Little flower" and his "Moon" in Maria's next instalment.

Overall, "Meadows of Shadow" is a well-written and imaginative retelling of a classic myth with a twist. Maria's vivid storytelling make it a worthwhile read for those seeking a fresh take on the Hades and Persephone story.

I have always loved Greek mythology but have never read about Hades and Persephone. This retelling made me fall in love with their story through the gorgeous descriptions of the characters and settings. Something I loved more and more as the novel developed was how the name of this book and the book cover beautifully depict the love and journey written within the pages.
