Hi, my name is Tania del Rio, author of the middle grade novel, WARREN THE 13TH AND THE ALL-SEEING EYE for Quirk Books. The sequel, WARREN THE 13TH AND THE WHISPERING WOODS comes out on March 21st, 2017! I’m also a professional comic book writer and artist with 10 years experience writing and illustrating for a young audience. My clients include Archie Comics, Dark Horse, and Marvel. AOL Comics Alliance described my work on SABRINA THE TEENAGE WITCH as “One of the best and most underrated all-ages comics of the last 10 years”! Most recently, I am the author of DIARY OF A GIRL NEXT DOOR: BETTY, an illustrated novel for Archie comics. I’ve also edited MANGAKA AMERICA (Collins Design), a gallery and tutorial book featuring some of the hottest emerging North American manga artists of the time, and am currently working on another tutorial book for Focal Press on character design. I reside with three dogs in Los Angeles, California, where I can be found writing under a palm tree, expressing my inner teenager.
Homely orphan Warren the 13th triumphed over a coven of witches and a lazy, malevolent uncle in Tania del Rio’s Warren the 13th and The All-Seeing Eye, thanks to the magical powers of his family’s hotel and his own perceptiveness and kindness. The Warren Hotel — planned by Warren the First and built by his architect son, Warren the Second — actually walks around! In this sequel, young Warren treats hotel guests to treks across the land. Unfortunately, due to an accident by Warren’s lazy, stupid Uncle Rupert, the hotel takes a tumble, and things only get worse from there — although I won’t spoil the book by detailing what, except to say that an especially powerful and evil witch determines to steal the hotel for her own nefarious purposes and that Warren has to cross the Malwoods, a forest just as sinister and dangerous as it sounds, to rescue the hotel and his friends.
Author Tania del Rio had a triumph with her debut book, Warren the 13th and the All-Seeing Eye, but the sequel is so much better! Will Staeble’s quirky two-color illustrations really enhance del Rio’s latest modern fairy tale. As with the first book, the sequel celebrates kindness, hard work, cleverness, loyalty, and the reality that your family are the people who love you, regardless of blood ties — or even species. A wonderful message for any age, but particularly in times of uncertainty.
In the interest of full disclosure, I received this book from NetGalley and Quirk Books in exchange for an honest review.
Miestami prehľadné s trochu schématickými postavami, no napriek tomu veľa sviežich momentov. Škoda amerického bombastickeho záveru. :)
Tania del Rio's "Warren the 13th and the Whispering Woods" is a fun, entertaining read. The book itself is attractive and well-put together. Will Staehle's illustrations add a lot to the story and appearance of the story. They make reading the book more fun and engrossing for children. I would definitely recommend this book to young people and/or the parents of; it would be exceptionally delightful to bring on a camping trip! I won my copy of this book from the Goodreads website and I appreciate the opportunity to read and review it. Note - the book is also of sturdy construction and can take a lot more of the wear and tear that young people can put their books through than many other books can.
I read this book with my 7 year old boy over the course of about 2 weeks or so. We read the first book last year and really enjoyed it too, so we were excited to pick up this one.
Personally as someone in his 40's I very much enjoyed the style of this book, as well as the writing, characters, and the art... especially the art! This book has that Edward Gorey, Tim Burton, Charles Addams type feel and I just love it!
But that's just my opinion, so in this case I decided to interview my 7 year old son:
Me: What would you rate this book from 1 to 5? 7 year old son: 5 being the best! Me: What did you think of the book? 7 year old son: I think it was really cool with all the Sapsquatches and witches and stuff. Me: What did you like most? 7 year old son: I liked the whole book. Me: Who's your favorite character? 7 year old son: I liked all the characters. Me: Would you recommend it for other kids? 7 year old son: Yes, cause I loved it so other kids would too. Me: What age would you recommend it for? 7 year old son: I recommend it for my age...7! Me: Did you learn anything from it? 7 year old son: Don't trust witches. Me: Anything else to add? 7 year old son: No, not really.
Dvojka Warrena 13 je lepšia ako jednotka. Prepracovanejšia storka s ešte viac čarodejnicami, šťavožrútmi, reportérom a Slizom a mimikom! A na konci ďalšie prekvapenie hotela. Toto bola veselá jazda s jedným (ja viem ja viem ja viem: očakávateľným) nedostatkom: je to detská kniha. Neviem sa báť o hlavných hrdinov: všetko musí skončiť dobre. Rozprávka. #trebacitat
Warren the 13th and the Whispering Woods picks up where Warren the 13th and The All-Seeing Eye left off. It was discovered at the end of the first story that the hotel could walk, so it became the world's first Traveling Hotel. In this story, the twelve year old orphan Warren the 13th is making a good living running the family hotel, that is until he gets taken in by a mimic. When the mimic traps him in a store and takes over the hotel, the trouble begins. I do not want to spoil the story except to day that once again the witches are involved. The queen, an especially powerful and evil witch, plans to steal the hotel for her own purposes. Warren is able to escape and now must cross the Malwoods, a dangerous forest full of sinister trees to save his hotel and rescue his friends.
I enjoyed this book more than the first. The characters are stronger and their friendships have grown. We see new characters and new situations. The messages of kindness, hard work, using your brain, loyalty, and the love of family and friends are strong in this book. Once again the illustrations add so much to the story that children will love it. A great addition to a school, public or personal library. Thanks to the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Warren the 13th and the Whispering Woods, written by Tania Del Rio and illustrated by Will Staehle was a wonderful surprise. It is the second book in the Warren the 13th series, after Warren the 13th and the All-Seeing Eye, which came out last November. The Warren books are illustrated middle grade novels and I’d situate them at the younger end of the age bracket, more 9-10 than 11-12. I haven’t read the first book, but I found that the second book works quite well as a standalone story. I must admit though that I’m curious to read the first book and find out what happened, because it’s bound to be a fantastic story.
Del Rio’s writing reads easily and is also a pleasure to read aloud, so it should be a fun book to read together with a young middle-grader. The reading experience is enhanced by the gorgeous illustrations created by Will Staehle. I really like Staehle’s style, which is quirky and reminiscent of the old-fashioned engravings often found in eighteenth and nineteenth century books and papers. The art compliments the sensibility of the story perfectly and enhances it as well.
Warren the 13th and the Whispering Woods is a very cute story, populated with endearing characters, wonderful villains, and an awesome journey of discovery. Both Warren and Petula learn a lot about themselves and about the world they live in, not in the last place that you can always surprise yourself by being more than you thought you were, whether that is more capable, braver, cleverer, or more determined.
Warren has a great adventure trying to rescue his hotel, one where he has to solve riddles and puzzles, fight witches and assorted ne’er-do-wells, and learn that things aren’t always as they seem. In this case, Sir Sap, the sap-squatch, who I adored. I really liked this truly civilised creature, who’s cultivated speech and good manners shock Warren a lot. I also really liked Petula’s mum Beatrice and the way she communicated via cards, because she lost her voice to a witch. But perhaps my favourite was Warren’s pet Sketchy, a kind of multi-eyed cephalopod. He was just the cutest thing and I loved how he saves the day several times just by virtue of his own unique nature and quick thinking.
Warren is a great hero in a wonderful world, where hotels can walk, trees can talk, and witches try to rule everything. I really enjoyed Warren the 13th and the Whispering Woods and I hope to share it and its predecessor with my daughters in the future. You can pick up your own copy of the book when it is published on March 21.
This book was provided for review by the publisher.
I mostly read this series for the illustrations and typography. I read this one as an ebook, which wasn't quite as enjoyable as when I read the first (which I had a hard copy of). Still a fun series, though.
'Warren the 13th and the Whispering Woods' by Tania del Rio and illustrated by Will Staehle is the second book in the series about a young hotel owner.
Warren's hotel is on the move and the guest are happy, until suddenly it falls over sideways new the Malwoods. Warren looks for a solution and gets replaced by an evil double who realizes he could sell the hotel to evil witches. Warren is now running to catch his hotel and making odd friends along the way.
I liked this second volume in this odd series. The characters and predicaments are fun as are the illustrations. I can't wait to find out what happens next.
I received a review copy of this ebook from Quirk Books and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this ebook.
Read in one sitting. What a delightful book to read :) It has that spooky vibes but adventurous. Warren the 13th is a brave kid, and I wish more people will read this series 😊
Not forgot to mention the illustrations... oh. My. It’s too beautiful 🥰
Brave, brave Warren goes on a journey to retrieve his hotel from a mimic, with the help of a new friend Sir Sap. The evil “nobody” almost gets away with his tricks.
Warren, Uncle Rupert, Petula, Mr. Friggs, Chef Bunion, Sketchy, and Beatrice are back. This book does pick up from the first one but not to worry as you can still read this book having not read the first one. However, I can tell you that after reading this book you will want to go back and read Warren the 13th and the All-Seeing Eye.
The characters that author, Tania has created for this series is great. They are all diverse but that is what makes them so great. Each one brings something fun to the story. Although, Uncle Rupert is just a big child in an adult's body. There were some super stars in this book. Petula, Mr. Friggs, and Sketchy all got more leading roles this time. It was nice to see Petula having that lead role. I got to know her better and she had a few new surprises this time. Of course, everyone loves Sketchy.
Additionally, this book took the readers outside of the hotel and introduced some new villains and friends. I can't wait to see what new grand adventure the gang encounter in the next book. Warren is a loveable hero. Warren for president!
I recently read Warren the 13th and the All-Seeing Eye in one sitting on Halloween. I loved it so much I dived straight into the second book in the series, Warren the 13th and the Whispering Woods. In this instalment Warren and his friends are back, this time in their moving hotel. All the favourite characters are back, including my new favourite Sketchy the monster. Like the previous book it is absolutely beautifully illustrated, and the overall design is stunning. I loved the red theme than ran through the All-Seeing Eye, and now the green for The Whispering Woods.
Whilst this story has plenty of action and excitement, I didn’t enjoy it as much as I enjoyed the previous book. It is a fun and charming read, but didn’t hook me in the same way. That being said I still think it’s a fabulous story, and a wonderful series for children and adults. This book has a much more witch centred theme than the All-Seeing Eye, and I loved the illustrations of the nasty witches and the evil Witch-Queen.
With Warren wandering around in the woods this book is very reminiscent of old fairy stories, and this was something that I really loved about the book. The book has lots of themes that I think appeal to little ones and not so little ones, like friendship, loyalty and bravery. If you’re looking for a fun read this winter, the Warren the 13th books are the gorgeous books you need to snuggle up with at bedtime.
