Battle of Bunker Hill: A History from Beginning to End

Rate this book
Discover the remarkable history of the Battle of Bunker Hill... Free BONUS Inside! In every war, there are those battles that mark a turning point, after which everything is different. These are the battles that help determine how the war will proceed. The Battle of Bunker Hill was one of those battles in the American Revolutionary War. While it was a battle that the American rebels lost, it was significant because it showed that a rag-tag band of civilian soldiers could in fact stand up to the best trained and most experienced military in the world at that time. Despite losing the battle, the American colonists managed to repulse the British advances twice before finally running out of ammunition during the third assault. Additionally, they killed or injured over 1,000 British soldiers as compared to only suffering a little over 400 casualties among their own ranks. It came as a surprise to the British who had gone into the battle supremely confident that they would easily win. They didn’t count on the spirit of the colonial rebels who were, by that time, committed to the fight. The Battle of Bunker Hill changed the entire tone of the American Revolutionary War—from that point forward, the British knew they were in for a long, difficult fight, and the colonists had the confidence they needed to declare their independence from Great Britain and establish their own new country, the United States of America. For the most part this book follows the tried and true formula that has made me love this series. Concise information written in an interesting and engaging manner with various degrees of success. BUT... As I began to read chapter 1, "Prelude to War," anticipating the normal good read, I was offput by the tone of the writing. I have read many of these books and written positive reviews so I know when something feels off.
The more I read the more disturbing it was. Whoever wrote Chapter 1 seemed to have an agenda against the Puritans which seemed to be based on the fact that they weren't Catholics. Maybe the author is Catholic? They don't write in the measured tone I have come to expect from Hourly History. Read it for yourself and make up your own mind.
Then he discusses the Great Awakening and claims it pushed "a series of themes notably different from earlier teachings [the Catholic ones?]. The writer doesn't make it clear. But he lists 5 of the concepts [all of which predate Catholics, Puritans and the Great Awakening because they are Biblical in nature]. Maybe that's the author's bias- I don't know it just seemed odd in that, in the long run, contrary to the author's assertion, it had little or nothing to do with the topic of the book! Once past this religious diversion the book earned its 3 stars by getting back to business at hand - the Battle of Bunker Hill.
I do recommend it but just be aware.

This book goes into the history behind the Battle of Bunker Hill and shows rather well how neither side was ready for such a battle. Among the various topics covered in the book are:

The 'Great Awakening.'
The Puritans.
British taxes and how they were used to fund a war.
The Boston Massacre.
The battles of Lexington and Concord.
Various mistakes made by both sides.
The technique by the Americans of killing British officers and how this affected the battle.
How the British under-estimated the American resistance.

It's an interesting and concise book.

Don't fire until you see

How many times has the phrase "don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes" been uttered by Americans. The Battle of Bunker Hill has had a mythological note to it. In this short history of the events that day the true story comes to light. The presentation in this book is very straightforward. I will say that I stumbled across a very few typos in this book, but they were not so bad as to stopping my reading or enjoyment of this book.
