This book tends to focus on Alexander Hamilton's post-Revolution life and included an abundance of details which some people (myself included)would find as tedious. I have always found Hamilton early life very interesting and was disappointed to see this book glossed over much of that. Not many personal details are included in regards to Hamilton, although he is widely quoted throughout the book.
Although written with a rather subjective political motive, this provides a good overview of Hamilton's contributions to the infant American nation and the major political discussions at the time. The political motive of the author is obvious (during a time when most history had a critical/marxist background), however, so it's easy to put his views and historical writings in perspective.
Hacker not only offers an account of Hamilton's life; he demonstrates the importance of Hamilton and his contribution to the establishment of the United States of America. Hamilton, contrary to the accusations leveled at him both during his lifetime and in modern writings, proved himself to have had the best interests of the young nation at heart. He was no monarchist, no aristocrat. He sought to give the newly formed country the financial, constitutional, and international foundation it would need in order, not only to become great, but to survive at all. It was his efforts which culminated in the United States' ability to secure the financing it needed, pay down its debt, establish trade relations with powerful nations, and begin to realize its potential and destiny.
A wonderful overview of Hamilton's career and its connection to Founding principles. The libertarian slant in the author's perspective is much more forgivable than the Rothbard-DiLorenzo "wolf in sheep's clothing" perspective.
