Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆/ 5 (3.5, rounded up to 4) (Disclaimer: This is my opinion and thoughts.. Please do not spread any negativity towards mine or other peoples’ opinion. Thank you) Pros: - Sarah simblet is a great artist and definitely knows and has educated herself on these topics very well. - I love the variety in regards to the artists that the writer shows as examples. Not biased, included short background information and is observant over their art pieces. - Good use of vocabulary and is very descriptive.
Cons: - A somewhat misleading title “An innovative, practical approach to drawing the world around you” I was hoping for more of the ‘practical’ teachings. As a visual learner, I find it hard to understand concepts with just theory and history. - As a beginner, I find the practical pages hard to understand. Many things like, perspective and proportions cannot be written in just 2 or 3 pages. It lacks easy to understand steps.
I enjoyed Simblet's book very much. It's an interesting survey of drawing history, technique, and genres, as well as an inspiration to artists and future artists. The book is well designed and filled with beautiful drawings on every page. Even a layman could enjoy this book and display on his/her coffee table.
One caution - this isn't a drawing manual for beginners. There are a number of interesting "lessons" throughout the book, but if you're just getting started, you may have difficulty doing the lessons as described. I would recommend this as a second or third drawing book, after you have a good year or so of drawing lessons under your belt. Or more generally, if you've gotten past the basic levels of drawing practice, then the lessons will be more useful and achievable. That being said, I think any artist will find this to be an enjoyable and inspiring read.
I enjoyed this book and the information and approaches the author imparted about how other people draw/drew and how I should draw the world around me. However nice the format and pictures/illustrations were, there wasn't very much actual instruction included. To me, it came across as mostly a venue for Sarah to display her excellent drawing skillz.
Fine artist, author, and broadcaster Dr. Sarah Simblet's work examines the connections between science, history, and art. co-author of The New Sylva, as well as the author of Sketchbook for the Artist and Anatomy for the Artist.
Sarah is committed to fostering people's visual intelligence through her drawings, instruction, and international broadcasting. She is a tutor in anatomy at the Ruskin School of Art and the Director of Studies for Fine Art at Christ Church, Oxford.
She also offers quick classes at the Ruskin and the Royal Academy of Art in London in anatomy, botany, and drawing. She has a drawing obsession. She draws in such great detail. I acquired her wonderful first book, Botany for Artists, at chapter2.pk, and this is her second.
This book explores the history of great drawings by various artists as well as various drawing equipment, rather than teaching readers how to draw.
You will adore this book, with the exception of a few chapters. Keep in mind that her books are not appropriate for beginners. Her writings are aimed toward advanced artists.
This is not a quick read. DK books contain high-quality paper and printing. Because of their high caliber, I adore DK Books. I purchased this book from chapter2.pk for 50% off. Some users may be unfamiliar with this website, however, I purchased expensive original books from it at a discount.
I really enjoy collecting books about design, calligraphy, drawings, etc. These books are a big part of my library. By clicking on my profile, you may see reviews of my other art books. You can read this book if you want to learn how to draw art history.
Great book. As a beginner I am mostly looking for books that motivate me rather than just instructions. There are plenty of books on how to draw but they don't motivate me as much. I am look also for books on observation which for me is more helpful. This book motivates me to draw and experiment and the illustrations are so amazing that I want to try to study some of them. Highly recommend.
A splendid book which inspired me when the author gave me a copy in hardback. Last year I gave my son a paperback copy for Christmas. It in turn inspired him to start drawing again using some of her techniques. Now I hear it is a set text for Art and Textiles GCSE. I recommended it to a friend as gift for her daughter preparing for this art course.
This book has fantastic number of illustrations from a wide selection of artist to demonstrate various drawing techniques. I enjoyed looking through it, but didn't get around to doing the exercises - will have to borrow it from the library again at the late date.
