I don't know what work has rendered Davis's mere prologue, but, when I discovered the book in the mid 1970's, it was my first exposure to the systematic analysis of the architecture of inter-personal relationship. His step-by-step examination of how an encounter moves from acquaintance toward intimacy was eye-opening. His identification of pitfalls, making up, and breaking up still appears helpful.
