From the bestselling author of The Social Affair and HER comes an intense and deadly provocative thriller which follows a woman who, in a fight for survival, realizes her job may cost more than it pays.
Several times a week, Charlotte Jones leaves suburbia behind and boards a chartered flight to parts unknown, where she wraps her hands around the necks of marks for just as long as she has to.
Then she goes back to domestic life with a paycheck, defense wounds, and the sense that she can handle anything.
Which is good, because being a wife, mother, and sociopath, with an insatiable taste for murder, gives the term work-life balance new meaning. When one life unexpectedly bleeds into the other, leading to a secret admirer and borderline insta-fame, Charlotte is forced to ask herself if she really can have it all.
Slick and unsettling, Kill, Sleep, Repeat is a cunning tale of deception and desire that begs the question: Do we ever really know people the way we think we do?
Britney King lives Texas with her family, two literary dogs, one ridiculous cat, and a partridge in a pear tree.
When she’s not wrangling these characters, Britney crafts psychological, domestic, and romantic thrillers that dive deep into the complexities of human nature.
Reading a Britney King novel always feels a little bit like coming home, which is a strange thing to say when a book is filled with gore and violence, but please hear me out. 🤣 You know those books that are filled with salacious drama, unseen twists, and hold-your-breath sinful action? That's precisely what you get every time you pick up a book by this author. Perhaps it is the brevity in length of her stories, or maybe it is the fact that I can always pick one up and ensure an enjoyable reading experience, but either way I always come back for more, and my brain has now associated her books as comfort reading. Kill Sleep Repeat is definitely Brit's most graphic story to date, and if you are squeamish when it comes to violence or discussion of pedophilia, you may want to pause before picking this up. However, if you enjoy dark, unsettling tales of murder and vengeance, I highly recommend you pick up this book.
*Many thanks to the author for providing my review copy.
So... Here goes an (un)healthy dose of voyeurism, stalking, obcession and murder. Monsters meet sometimes... in the killer book of killers. 4.5 overall but who am I kidding: I'll round it to fine for the sake of a fine day today.
Q: Most people, Henry included, have a hard time believing that it’s possible to hide what I do from my spouse. Especially, if you consider I’ve been doing it for so many years. But that’s because people these days have forgotten what discretion truly is. Privacy is power. What people don’t know, they can’t ruin. (c) Q: It’s always funny to me. People think they know what their spouse does when they’re outside the house. But do they really? ... We all wear different masks. (c) Q: The first time it happened, I did not think it was funny. It wasn’t funny the second time, either. By that point, saving her ass had become a full-time job. With mandatory overtime. (c) Q: The black box, it’s called. In reality, it’s orange. Probably my first big point: most things aren’t what they seem. (c) Q: I don’t typically fly while under the influence, but this is what you could call a special circumstance. (c) Q: No one wants to die in the middle of their life story. (c) Q: There are three rules. More than that, but three main ones: Stay focused. Remain in character. Don’t get murdered. (c) Q: Murder is mostly a mental game. (c) Q: “We make it a point to look for people like you.” “You have a thing for new moms?” (c) Q: “Men and women—people like us, who are different, who lack a conscience, who possess an absence of the ability to feel guilt—it’s a great equalizer on this planet. A necessity, honestly.” (c) Q: One thing about psychopaths, they’re incredibly perceptive. ... Another thing about psychopaths: they’re like wild animals; it’s important to hold your own. It’s a matter of life and death. And even still, sometimes they win. A thought that is never too far from my mind. (c) Q: She doesn’t realize I survey data for a living, that I spend my days deciphering code, reading people, and so when it comes to where my children are concerned, it’s like a walk in the park. (c) Q: ... all I can think about is being on that plane, arriving at O’Hare, killing the mark, waking up and doing it all again. It’s the simple things in life that make you most happy. (с) Q: I decide it then. I love her with the kind of mad passion that I reserve for only one other thing in my life. (c) Q: “I think you’re right.” If there’s one thing a woman likes to hear, it’s that. (c) Q: The way she sizes me up feels like floating in the ocean on a warm day. ... Her eyes shift between the two of us. They contain entire universes. Unnamed galaxies I’d like to explore. (c) Q: I have twenty-four hours left to accomplish an entire lifetime of work. (c) Q: Turns out, there’s a lot to think about when considering the end of your life. It’s like packing for a faraway vacation, just one you don’t return from. I always knew this was in the realm of possibilities for me. I just didn’t think it would happen so soon. But then, no one does. Death usually sneaks up on you that way. (c) Q: This is the problem with society. It’s obviously no secret that most people are fucking idiots. (c) Q: It was the best decision I ever made. Each and every lie. (c) Q: Surveillance is actually an unnatural activity, and a person partaking in it must deal with strong feelings of self-consciousness and of being out of place. (c) Q: There is nothing that could be taken from me that hasn’t already been taken. (c) Q: It’s hard to be good at your job when you’ve spent so much time on nefarious distractions. (c) Q: Mimic the way a cat steps outside. Stop and smell the air, listen and watch. (c) Q: I think our demons could play beautifully together. (с) Q: ... if I had a nickel for every stupid move highly intelligent people made, well, I’d be rich. Wait. I am rich. (c) Q: What a beautiful thing it is to kill so many birds with one stone. (c) Q: It’s hard to see truth about others when you’re so busy trying to conceal it yourself. (c)
Where are my dark, twisted, and creepy as f thriller loving fans?!
Britney King has become one of my to go authors when I'm craving a DARK and addicting thriller.
Kill, Sleep, Repeat definitely has many aspects that will be a trigger for many (don't want to give out too much for spoilers).
Let me tell you it's NOT for the faint of heart and... Charlotte is one bad ass chick! Phew.... this one will leave your dreams haunted.
If you haven't read anything by this author yet... what are you doing with your life? Kill, Sleep, Repeat is addicting, dark, and one hell of a wild ride my friends so buckle up ;).
4 dark and addicting stars!
Thank you so much to Britney for providing me an arc in exchange for an honest review.
Oh my goodness...what a ride!! Britney King you rock! This is an absolute cracker of a book - dark, twisty, gory and did I mention dark? Woah! This book is not for you if you are squeamish. It is really violent and descriptive and I loved it!!
I really don't know what to say about the plot without giving anything away - this is a book that you want to go into fairly blind. The twists and turns will make you dizzy but you do not want it any other way. Charlotte Jones is a mother, wife and a killer. Her "day job" is working on charter flights for the rich. Nobody would ever guess what goes on in her head. She is ruthless and determined.
I read this book in 2 sittings, only because I was completely exhausted and my eyes would not stay open to finish it. It was a really fast paced psychological thriller and I loved every minute of it.
Thank you Britney King for the advanced copy to read and thank you for having me on the blog tour. I highly recommend this to lovers of this genre and I challenge you not to be shocked!
Kill, Switch, Repeat is an intriguing thriller about a woman named Charlotte that leads a dark double life. Most people know her as a flight attendant, wife to her architect husband, Michael, and mother to her two beautiful daughters, Hayley and Sophie. Only a select few know Charlotte's true passion and secondary occupation involves ridding the world of it's most depraved pieces of shit by doing what she loves most, murdering them.
Being an assassin ain't easy, but Charlotte is pretty damn good at it. For more than a decade, she's successfully kept her most profitable profession a secret from her family and the world at large. Being in the wrong place at the wrong time suddenly brings Charlotte into the public eye in a way she's never been before and complicates her life in ways she never could have anticipated.
Britney King is an author I've had the pleasure of reading a few times before. What I love most about her storytelling is the way she puts you inside the minds of her crazy, complex characters. Her writing reminds me a lot of Caroline Kepnes in that way. If you've read You or Hidden Bodies by that author, then you know what I'm talking about.
Kill, Sleep, Repeat is similar in tone to this author's previous work which is something I enjoyed. However, I believe this is the darkest, most gory book of hers I've ever read. That gave it serious bonus points for me. The description of the bloody acts of violence carried out by these characters painted a vivid picture of the scenes in my mind. This book will always stand out to me, because of that.
I also love the way the author made me think about the differences between appearances and reality. Charlotte looks like your average wife and mother, but in reality, she's anything but. The timing of this read with an incident that happened in my own neighborhood made me think about that even more.
Just this week, our neighbor's wife shot him in the back. They live in one of the nicest houses on the block on the biggest piece of property. They have nice cars and have always appeared to be down to earth, nice people everytime we've encountered them. You wouldn't think when you looked at them that their lives were anything less than suburban bliss, but your assumptions would obviously be wrong.
Charlotte is such an interesting character because of her appearance vs. what she hides from most of the world. Her persona vs. who she is at her core. She is a cold blooded killer, but she's also a loving mother. She enjoys murdering people she feels are deserving of that fate, but she doesn't take pleasure in killing innocents. All those complexities and contradictions make her an intriguing character to read about. Her point of view had me hooked. I had so much fun inside her head!
Another character's perspective is sprinkled into the story here and there, and while I was interested in learning more about them, I didn't feel like their point of view gave enough information to fully develop them as a character. I wish we would have gotten a little more from our time both in their thoughts and with the heroine.
I was intrigued by the premise of the story, and the more of it I read, the more captivated I became by the storyline. I was on the edge of my seat almost the whole way through. There was a big plot twist towards the end of the book that I never saw coming, and it probably made me more excited than anything else in the book. Unfortunately, not much was done with it after it was discovered. I was hoping the shit was going to hit the fan so to speak, but instead, it was dealt with quickly leaving me with what felt like very little closure. The ending was also somewhat anticlimactic which was a bit disappointing.
That being said, I enjoyed the story overall, and I can't wait to read more from Britney in the future. I recommend this one to all fans of this author, and if you enjoy psychological thrillers that are more character driven than plot driven, this might be the one for you!
There are three rules. More than that, but three main ones: Stay focused. Remain in character. Don’t get murdered.
It’s funny how different he looks now that I don’t care about him anymore. Now, I can see how ordinary he is, how it was my love that made him special… that placed him on a pedestal.
My Review:
Every single time I have picked up one of Britney King’s brilliantly paced and absorbing tales, I seem to be immediately sucked into her character’s vortex and there I remain, in the eye of her cleverly contrived storm long after the final page. Her word voodoo is strong! But ~ sputter ~ Holy Hell! As if I didn’t already know but this gripping tale confirms it - Britney King is one twisted sister! I gasped, I cringed, I shivered, I flinched, I sucked up wine like a dehydrated camel while white-knuckling my Kindle, but I couldn’t have stopped reading this unsettlingly insightful and well-crafted tale if my hair was on fire. Ms. King excels at seductive sociopaths, and I bow in awe and respect (and no small amount of fear) to her agile skill and word prowess. Although, I feel in desperate need of brain bleach after this one, due to the heinous nature of the vile villains her clever character was dispatching – uuuggeee.
As has been the case with the previous Britney King books I have read, Kill Sleep Repeat is full of grit and graphic things that are sure to trigger a lot of people. If you are going to read this then you need to be a person that likes the dark and disturbing and won't mind triggers. There are also lots of unlikable characters, but I found that even though Charlotte Jones is meant to be unlikable I actually really liked her. It was almost like a Dexter thing, and you can't help but love someone that badass. I am all about strong female leads, even if they do happen to be murdering people.
King didn't disappoint me in the least with Kill Sleep Repeat and it was an incredibly quick, one-sitting read which I have come to know and love about this author's books. I read it in a little less than 2.5 hours and I just couldn't stop reading. I was highly satisfied with the ending and I know Britney King fans are going to love this new book from her amazingly twisted mind.
Final Thought: If you haven't read a book by this author yet then what are you waiting for? At times graphic, and always dark and disturbing, Kill Sleep Repeat is not for the faint of heart but it is a highly satisfying novel that will leave you breathless. I can't wait to see what she comes up with next!
Thank you to the author for providing me with an advance review copy of this book! All opinions and thoughts are my own.
"There are three rules. More than that, but three main ones: Stay focused. Remain in character. Don't get murdered."
This is my SEVENTH book by Britney and each one has been a binge read of fast paced twisty goodness that I can never seem to put down. If I'm turning that first page, I know I better clear the next few hours because I'm not stopping. Nope. Not gonna. This was EXACTLY what I needed. After not finishing one book and being disappointed by my last read, I just knew Britney would bring me back where I needed to be. And so it shall be done.
This book starts off at a sprint and never stops. Charlotte is a FUN (albeit psychopathic) character and I adore her! I feel like her and Victoria Helen Stone's Jane Doe could be besties - you know, if these types of characters actually had friends. 😉 Charlotte is just bad ass. King did an excellent job with her character. I think I need more Charlotte.
It's SO hard to really talk a lot about this book without giving anything away. Charlotte has a very dangerous job while juggling home life with her boring husband and two daughters. There are some issues and I have questions as this book speeds along with a quickness that I had to flip back pages a couple of times to see if I missed anything. However, it's reading with an adrenaline rush! At one point I thought, "Ok, break after this chapter to take care of x, y and z." And then that chapter ends with a revelation I was NOT expecting and nope, I was done. HAD. TO. FINISH. I'm a mixture of WHY Charlotte to HELL YEAH at the ending but either way, swiped that last page with a huge smile on my face.
Suspend a bit of reality, strap yourself in and get ready for a wild ride. Britney's done it again and I, for one, am utterly addicted to her. OPEN READ REPEAT.
Release Date: January 16, 2020 Actual Rating: 4 stars
Dark Psychological Thriller | Domestic Thriller | Vigilante Justice
Woah. This just may be Britney King's DARKEST novel yet! Not only is it DARK, but it's a complex, mind bending thriller with a SHOCKING TWIST I didn't see coming. Honestly, my mind is still reeling for it all. Readers, if you've enjoyed the authors books in the past you won't want to miss this one. Potential readers, I recommend her books! She writes fantastic novels of psychological suspense but in a unique and satirical way. In each one you get to be the eyes behind the narrator and see everything unfold. It's sort of like reading YOU by Caroline Kepnes but in a much harsher way. I absolutely LOVE IT. I do want to warn you though that this book may have some triggers. Want to know what they are? You can read my mini spoiler here >>
That being said, I don't want to get too much in the plot because I don't want to spoil the story and I fear ANYTHING I say about it will in fact be too much. I will say though that this is one heck of a thriller and I was glued to the pages from beginning to end. I read this one in ONE SITTING and am still thinking about it. I love Britney's novels- they are so unique and gripping- and am anxiously awaiting the next one already!
3.5 Stars This was my first experience with the author and I will be definitely checking out more of her stuff in the future. So this was an interesting premise Charlotte leads a double life, not only is she a wife and mother but using her job as an air stewardess as a guise she travels the world as a top-level international assassin and while it is instantly obvious that Charlotte who goes by the code name Olivia is a sociopath who is ultimately at heart self-serving and selfish she also utilises her talents for what she sees as the greater good helping to rid this world of its top predators along the way while earning a paycheck. She also again seems to again have a heart when it comes to her husband Michael and her children Sophia and Hayley. So Charlotte is definitely not all bad and she has her own set of standers that she holds herself accountable too. So this was primarily a psychological thriller, it. narrated from two separate points of view: mostly Charlotte herself and a character called JC who seems to be a sociopathic stalker that she has managed to collect along the way and who also seems to have a limited idea of who Charlotte really is: he's definitely due for a loud awakening though. So this was bloody and brutal and totally unapologetic, it was also an intriguing insight into what makes our girl tick. I certainly enjoyed this a lot but it wasn't without some issues that affected my overall enjoyment slightly. So where this lost points for me, first this moved fairly slowly concentrating more on Charlottes inner-self reflection and relationship dynamics. But when it really mattered after that grand reveal and all and I was expecting things to go completely postal there was absolutely nada, no confrontation or fallout whatsoever. The struggle and eventual results were all internalised this is when I would have like to see the family dynamics implode taking no prisoners. I definitely think opportunities were lost here and it could have been so much better. I also didn't really ever get a real sense of JC and who he essentially was. I also wasn't a huge fan of the epilogue either. Despite the above, at heart, this was still very entertaining it also had oodles of potential and come on female housewife assassin how could you not want to get stuck into that, for that reason alone I would recommend you try this one. I voluntary reviewed a copy of Kill Sleep Repeat.
I started and finished this book yesterday evening, but needed some time to collect my thoughts before rating it.
The book is about a woman named Charlotte: a wife, mother of two kids, flight attendant, and killer. Her flights usually involve a target. Once that’s complete, she goes back home.
I really wanted to like this book, and had been looking forward to it for awhile. To me, it sounded like one of those fun, juicy reads. In fact, I previously read the author’s book, HER, and had a great time reading it. I just don’t think I can say the same about this one. First of all, there is absolutely no character development, so I didn’t care for anyone and felt no emotional attachment. It’s an extremely quick read, which is nice, but I think it could’ve benefited to give more background on characters and motives. The story is so implausible, and while I get why she is killing these targets NOW, I still can’t wrap my head around how Charlotte got involved so easily. The twists (and I use that term loosely) feel like they are just thrown in to take the book from point A to point B to Hell. There is also a repulsive scene of disgusting and grotesque violence. I can handle violence in my reading and TV shows, but I felt like it was just thrown in for shock value. The epilogue was absurd. This was a hot mess!
While I wouldn’t recommend this book to anyone, there are quite a few positive reviews out there, so maybe this just didn’t work for me. I would give the author another try, based solely on the quality of the previous book of hers I read.
Where are all my dark, twisty, no holding back, totally messed up thriller fans? If that’s you - Kill, Sleep, Repeat by Britney King is definitely going to be a book for you. This book has all the trigger warnings (I’m not even going to start listing them) and the gore, the sex, the heart pounding suspense and it is SO good! This is the fourth book of Kings that I’ve read so far and definitely my favorite! It’s out today so be sure to grab your copy and let me know what you think - but a reminder: it’s NOT for the faint of heart. Final verdict: I was hiding it under my desk because I couldn’t put it down, it was that good!
I received an advanced copy. All opinions are my own.
KILL SLEEP REPEAT is dark, twisty, and violent with a decent amount of gore - so of course I totally recommend it!
We meet Charlotte Jones, married with two teenage girls, a flight attendant on charter flights for the well-to-do, oh, and a trained killer. She lives a double life, one that appears normal, until she slaps on a wig and uses an alias while heading for the airport. It’s the perfect cover to make her vocation work. But just like Charlotte moonlighting as an assassin, things aren’t always what they appear.
King writes every scene with no detail spared. Just know going in that here are some graphic scenes, but they are always pertinent to the story. KILL SLEEP REPEAT is a fun, wild, and compulsive ride - like read-in-one-sitting kind of compulsive. I am convinced that not only can King write amazing psychological thrillers, she can write a damn good action scenes as well. King continues to surprise me in the best way. If you haven’t picked up one of her books yet, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?
It might be a good read. But, the sample wasn't enough to keep me going. It's been on my shelf for more than 2 weeks, and for me that's a long time to be on my shelf and not tempting me to read further. So... DNF.
UNBELIEVABLE! I just stayed up all night to read this from cover to cover. An absolute thriller with some really great twists throughout. And as always King had me laughing me with her dark humor. I don't know how how she does it but literally every Britney King that I have read becomes a favorite! This is a MUST READ THRILLER!! You will not be disappointed!
Kill, Sleep, Repeat by Brittany King Wowza!!! I have said it before and I will say it again, I love Brittany Kings writing, I love her books, with each book she gets better and better! The problem is I am once again done with the latest book and am now forced to wait once again until her next release. ...sigh..... Charlotte is a suburban housewife, mother, flight attendant...killer?! her husband Michael an architect, the perfect normal family right? Think again! Crack open the cover on this book and be prepared to not move until you are done. Kill, Sleep, Repeat grabs you from the beginning and takes you for a ride that will blow your mind, will leave you gasping, frantically wanting more from this author! I received an ARC of this book and am so glad I can leave my opinion of this book....Read it!!
This book is seriously F'ed up. NOT for the faint of heart. Britney King isn't playing around. Graphic, grotesque, sex, gore, holy trigger warnings but she manages so much fast paced crazy that I ended up liking this. Gore, revenge killing, vigilante killing, etc, is totally fun in my book but it's the very vulgar sex I could really do with out. I nearly dnf'd around the 73%ish mark bc of profane and disturbing content. Despite that, it was very crazy and wild ride. Definitely not for all readers.
This was my first book by Britney King (thank you Britney for the e-book for review). Wow, this was pretty crazy, in an awesome way! We have Charlotte, a married mother of 2 girls, a flight attendant for charter flights and a trained assassin. She's living that double life! This story was addictive and twisted! Charlotte one strong, bad ass lady! Be prepared if you read this, for some graphic scenes. If you love dark thrillers, you will definitely be pleased with this one. I hope to read more by Britney King in the future as it seems like her books are getting rave reviews!! Highly recommend this one!!
"There are three rules. More than that, but three main ones: Stay focused. Remain in character. Don't get murdered."
I enjoyed this. Sooo many secrets! This book will have you questioning how well do you really know the people in your life? Are they truly who you think they are, or are the hiding their truths and simply pulling the strings. Can you trust them? Can you trust yourself?
This was my first book the author and I believe I will be definitely checking out more of her stuff in the future.
❝Everything that needs to be said has already been said. But, since no one was listening, everything must be said again.❞ - André Gide
Devilishly dark and addicting, Britney King has done it again. Love Jane Doe? Looking for a female Dexter? Look no further than King’s brilliantly crafted new character, Charlotte. This crafty psychopath could be your neighbor next door. Do we ever really know people? Are they ever who they say they are? This story is best gone in blind. Sit back and enjoy the ride. You’ll first want to turn off your phone and feed the little minions because NOTHING is going to make you want to put this one down until you’ve turned the very last page.
I received an ARC of this from the author and was really excited because after reading a few of her previous books I knew to expect a wild murder-filled ride!
I was not disappointed! KILL, SLEEP, REPEAT starts out with introducing you to Charlotte, the basic beautiful suburban mother, married to an architect who plans their sex because life with two teenage daughters is just so busy! Charlotte works as a stewardess on charter flights, so she's a frequent traveler. Pretty boring except planning carpool runs is the least of her concerns because she also happens to be a trained assassin!
At work, Charlotte becomes Olivia and follows a strict code she calls "The six P's: Prior planning prevents piss poor performance." She loves her job and works hard to keep her two lives separate because they balance her out and when a chance encounter turns her into an overnight viral news story her whole carefully constructed life begins coming apart at the seams and secrets are unfurled faster than you can turn the page!
From the very beginning, I was enthralled in the story and had to know what happens! I binge read this in one night and I have zero regrets because it was such twisty fun! If you like strong female protagonists, murder and mayhem with a satisfying revenge scheme KILL, SLEEP, REPEAT is the book for you! Reminded me of a mix of YOU and AMERICAN PSYCHO only this time the murderer is a pretty lady!
Be warned; there's some skeevy parts that will make you squirm, but it's worth reading through them because Charlotte is a sweet sweet sociopath.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/ Five stars for this entertaining fast paced thriller!
4.5 ⭐️ Kill, Sleep, Repeat was my very first Britney King book, and it certainly won’t be my last. I flew through this book within hours of picking it up. Her writing immediately captivated me, and it’s the kind of writing just like hers that actually makes me excited to read. Psychological thrillers are just my thing. The back and forth of emotions...the ups and the downs of the story...the “WTF” moments... I loved it all.
I highly recommend this book to all of the thriller lovers out there. Pick this one up, you won’t regret it. Special thanks to Britney King for providing me with a copy of this arc!
As soon as Kill Sleep Repeat hit my Kindle, I began reading. I cannot let one of her thrillers sit on my virtual bookshelf. I must know who will be put through hell this time.
Stay focused. Remain in character. Don’t get murdered. For Charlotte, they are rules to live by.
Charlotte is a flight attendant and an assassin, which makes it easy to travel to her marks. Her victims pay the ultimate price. She’s married to Michael, with two daughters, but no one knows her secret. She is a sociopath, no conscience, no remorse and revels in wrapping her hands around her marks neck until no sign of life is left, but they are all villains in their own right. Her father was a sheriff, so maybe that’s where she comes by her need for justice.
She killed for the first time when she was in college, but Britney King doesn’t let it be just a murder. This the first twist that caught me offguard and I am loving it.
Do we ever really know someone? Their true thoughts and feelings? What they are doing when we are not with them? How long can someone hide the truth from their spouse, their family, their friends? How long before they all figure out who you really are…a sociopath.
Henry…is a good or bad? Can she trust him?
JC…well, I see him being a big problem and I’m not sure who he really is…until…
The website. I love how she handled that. Adds a little something extra, which is something Britney King manages to do in each and every story. It’s the little details that make a story something special.
Britney King is excellent with book surprises and I was hit with one after another, each larger than the first. I never saw the direction we would go, the danger and intrigue. I want to say more, but I want you to experience this for yourself, so mum’s the word.
As I read Kill Sleep Repeat, I was totally in Charlotte’s corner. She may be a vigilante, taking the law into her own hands, but I want her to succeed and survive. I want her to get her revenge when she is faced with the ultimate betrayal. Kill or be killed.
I bounced between 4 and 5 stars, but because it is an ARC, I will overlook the tiny issues I had because it is just that good!
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of Kill Sleep Repeat by Britney King.
Britney King does it again! She creates a great psychological thriller about a woman Charlotte Jones, a is typical soccer mom with two daughters and a husband. She is also an assassin of some really wicked people. This story has so many twists in it, it's so entertaining. I don't want to give too much away, but the end will surprise you too. Check it out for an entertaining read!
Wow! I've never read this author before but I will read all her books now! This is wicked dark and twisted. A mother, a wife , a flight attendant and a skilled killer. Shocking! and one of the best thrillers I've read.
The cover of this book depicts a curvaceous woman in a red dress holding a knife, so I was suckered into expecting an exciting read. What followed instead of an exciting read was a disjointed story with very little dialogue that was essentially the rambling narrative of a female assassin.
The female assassin is a naturally-pretty flight attendant named Charlotte who discovered back in college that she feels fulfilled by killing people. Not just bad people like the creep who raped her college roommate, but also annoying people like her college roommate.
Charlotte has two teenaged daughters. The father of her eldest daughter was a married pilot on one of Charlotte’s flights. She killed him for no apparent reason. The father of her younger daughter is her husband Michael, who we learn in the book’s big reveal is not quite who he pretends to be.
It’s not clear why Charlotte became a flight attendant and even less clear why a fellow flight attendant named Henry recruited her to join an anonymous agency that murders bad people, like pedophiles and sex traffickers. She spends a lot of time hunting one particular predator named Dunsmore.
While Charlotte is busy hunting Dunsmore she is herself being stalked by one of her passengers who claims he wants to protect her but ultimately abducts and repeatedly rapes her; an unpleasant and frankly disgusting episode in the book’s final chapters that lasts far too long.
In short, the story has no cohesion, rhyme or reason. It’s simply a setup for you to buy volume two. I don’t know what the cover of that book looks like, but volume one is a textbook example of the truth that you can’t tell a book by its cover — and that there’s a sucker born every minute.
In this case the sucker was me. Waste your time and money on this mishmash and it can be you too.
Straight up--this book is not for the faint of heart. It's a dark, twisty, and somewhat disturbing thriller. It's pretty graphic and violent, too. That said, I loved it. There are so many thrillers where you know there is going to be a twist somewhere and you are waiting for it. Well, this book got me. This book had a twist that I didn't even see coming and I loved it. That's when you know you have read a great book. If you are into a quick read thriller, do yourself a favor and read this book.
Thank you to Britney King for providing me with an arc in exchange for an honest review. It was my pleasure to read this book.
Psychological thrillers are a favorite genre of mine and I wanted to love Kill, Sleep, Repeat, but for me it missed the mark.
Charlotte Jones is a flight attendant. It’s not a job she particularly enjoys, but it makes her other job easier. For fifteen years, she’s flown around the world, eliminating the most unsavory who’s money and power allow them to cheat justice. In another world, one could appreciate the vigilante justice dispensed by Charlotte and her co-assassins. However, that was lost in translation for me because Charlotte is a sociopath and she killed long before she became a hired assassin.
Murders, spree killings, kidnappings, cartel hits…all good stuff, but for me, the delivery was lukewarm. Charlotte’s always methodical, matter of fact, and planning her next move… meaning, the next time she gets to kill.
JC Warren is a psychopath, stalking, kidnapping and keeping women as his ‘wives’ until he tires of them… and now he has Charlotte in his sights.
Charlotte’s real life includes a husband and two teenage daughters who are little more than props for her. I felt sorry for Michael, her long-suffering husband. At first. Her past includes a mother who abandoned her, and a police officer father killed in the line of duty shortly before Charlotte became a mother.
JC hints at his old-money family, which gives him the freedom to be a predator. I never got a good grasp on JC. Psychopaths are hard to define even in fiction, but a sadistic nature accompanies his warped sense of right and wrong.
Charlotte carries this read and there were several missed opportunities when suspense could have been amped up, but she always retreated into her internal thoughts and the moment was gone. Despite being a sociopath, I expected more emotional reaction from her, especially when she found out to whom she was married to, but even that seem tempered. Shaken by the discovery, to me, she was more indignant than hurt. She was smart. She was calculating… and she’d been fooled. However, when she spoke of her love for Michael and how it made him special, I nearly rolled my eyes into another dimension. He was someone she’d tolerated, manipulated and ignored. Charlotte Jones didn’t love anyone.
Told from Charlotte and JC’s alternating points of view, this well-written story has a good premise and spot on plot twists, but with the retelling of the story, many times it reads like a journal with little showing. With Charlotte’s flat personality and JC being just plain nuts and out of step, I never felt any sense of urgency or suspense… no pop. It’s a good story that for me, fell short.
