ily Pino! What an amazing story, I had not yet read a war story based in Italy so it was interesting to learn about the experiences of people in Milan at that time. The story was a bit slow to begin with but then became very intriguing. Loved the chapter wrapping up the story at the end since it was based on real people, was great to not be left wondering what happened after the war for all the characters/actual people.

The bare bones of the story made for an interesting story, and gateway to an aspect of World War II I wasn't aware of. However, this would have worked better as a long read journalistic essay, rather than a 500 page doorstop. The novel is deeply embedded within Catholicism, with some doctrine lines which I found distracting. The prose was severely lacking for my tastes. As was any serious attempt at exploring complexity of character emotions. Characters were quite 2 dimensional. I found myself wishing the basic story (plucky young Italian helps smuggle Jews across the Alps before becoming the chauffeur to a top rank German commander) spent more time analysing how his subsequent years of guilt manifested itself.

This book was incredible. The start was a little slow for me and I’m not big into history so I didn’t think I would enjoy this as much as I did. It made me want to do research and learn more about the people and places in this story.

An incredible hero that deserves this recognition. I think this author did an excellent job at bringing Pino to life and making you really feel like you were there in each moment of the book.

The story was a page turner…definitely can not be a nonfiction book…the writing was fairly poor, felt like a teenage boy wrote it at times. But the story is a good one…just shouldn’t be marketed as nonfiction!

The story of Pino Lella, an Italian teen, and his life during the Nazi occupation of Italy during the years of 1943-1945. Although a real person and his experiences during the war, the book is categorized under Historical Fiction instead of Biography because 1) the author only interviewed Pino when Pino was age 79; 2) Most the of Nazi occupation of Italy documentation was burned; and 3) the Italians developed a collective amnesia of the war as it was simply a time they would just as soon forget. This was the first book I have read of the Nazi occupation of Italy, and I'm ashamed it has taken me 7 decades to learn of my heritage during that era. Excellent book, can't-put-down story. Even the love story didn't deter me. Definitely recommend

Highly recommend. This was a fascinating book following a young man Pino as he finds ways to resist in plain site during WWII. It is a story that could have easily gone untold. I did not know until the end of the book that it was based on a true story. Love that they gave an update on all the main characters at the end.

BOOK CLUB SELECTION.......I loved this true story but I'm still not sure what happened to the Nazi that Pool worked for.....how come he got off Scott free, what was his actual job and how did he know Pool's undercover name. This is the first WWII book I have read that took place in Italy...

Regardless of the dissent regarding the truth of the story, beneath a Scarlet Sky is a great story. Personally, if I wanted a absolutely factual account of a historical event, I would have purchased a history book. I think this story is well worth reading.

The writing seemed like it was done by a thirteen year old but once I accepted this and dropped any expectations of it getting better, I couldn’t stop reading this book and became very attached to precious Pino, the main character. I am grateful that the author wasn’t very descriptive because it would have been a lot harder emotionally to read about all of the horrors Pino encountered throughout the war. I was interested in reading this book because I grew up in the area of Italy where it is set and was traveling there at the time and wanted to understand what it was like during the war. This gave a dramatic account from a teenagers point of view in the prose you would expect from this age group. I can see it being well received in a High School classroom. I’ll read Farewell to Arms next with the expectation of learning about this time while also enjoying quality literature.
