This series is one of the best video game extra's manga's/ adapation. Its very good. Though you should play dmc 5 before reading it since it assumes you've played that story first and is a sorta extended story of one of the new characters.
Art style is amazing. If you can appreciate good art like the stuff you see in Black Butler (黒執事) then you can truly appreciate this style regardless of whether you care for the story or not. It has a more mature, graceful style that isn’t overly blocky/masculine (or akin to western comics) or cutesy (as much anime and manga is). From an artist’s perspective; I want physical copies for my collection when it’s complete.
Story expands well on pre-DMC5 events and focuses on V (obviously). If you’re a fan of V as a character then you’ll love this. Frankly, if you have no clue as to the story of the Devil May Cry universe, Vergil, or V then I don’t think you’ll enjoy this or even understand it without that back story. The most interesting part is seeing V (and Vergil in a way) face his conflicting feelings about helping people and confronting trauma that Vergil never could. The dynamic between V and his companions is great. It’s a primary part of his character in the game but it really shines here and is heavily developed; from their origins and how they came together to their burgeoning camaraderie.
The series isn’t complete and it starts to overlap with DMC5 events so we’ll have to wait and see where it goes (and slow going it is). Largely though, it’s not massively new information or story plots but it does offer a lovely insight into V’s perspective as events unfold and helps to unwrap the mystery that is his character. An excellent companion to the game.
4 volumes comic/manga predating the events of DMCV from the point of view of the titular new character V. A prequel if you will. However. MUST FINISH THE GAME BEFORE READING FOR OPTIMAL EXPERIECE imo.
It answers many questions left lurking during V volatile, vague existence. Most importantly they're canon as far as I believe. V has always been my favorite new addition to the game and knew there was more than meets the eye to his design and demeanor.
he said he wanted more power bc he was traumatized by being powerless to save his mother but like he actually wanted to be saved by his mother because that's what kids want when they're in pain and scared they want their parents but he was alone and like he was alone for several decades and tortured and and and 😭😭😭😭
DMC5 is one of the most fun video games I've ever played, and before that, my knowledge of Vergil extended to simply the guy who wants more power and BURY THE LIGHT. After playing DMC5 Special Edition, it was so freaking fun to do Vergil mode and act like a tactical missile
The story in the actual game was kinda silly and surface level, so never in hell would I have expected this absolute fire reading based on the game.
I'm dead as hell man Vergil is so mf sad on God 😭😭 Crying to heavy metal in his name 💔💔💔
A different take on the DMC5 story, taking it into the eyes of V. I never heard of this artist before but I love his style so much. Just 14/10 stunning. When I initially played the game, I didn't really care much for V. After reading this series (well most of it, didn't know it was finished until recently T-T), I care too much about him now. Although very different genres, I feel like I'm reading Zuko's redemption arc with V indirectly redeeming Vergil's humanity. It makes V feel like he's on his last legs trying to save whatever's left of himself after everything. It follows the plot of DMC5 more as time goes on, but it's still really good. I read scans and own some of the manga, if you like pretty art and DMC5, this is for you for sure.
READ AFTER YOU HAVE FINISHED THE GAME! if you are wondering if you should read this, just do it- english speakers go to the divinity statue and view (not download) this book rn. no shade to the game but this series should have been what dmc5 was about. v and vergil are so compelling here like holy shit. great art, great paneling, great writing, just a good dmc story.
i really loved this series! i’m pretty biased since V is my favorite but it’s really cool diving deeper into his backstory and learning more about vergil from it !! if you liked devil may cry 5 or just the dmc games in general i recommend it!💝
Utterly gorgeous and delightfully heart-rending. Ogata captures immense emotional turmoil with beautiful, symbolic, and sometimes abstract art. Amazing supplemental material to an already wonderful game. Must-read for any DMC lore enthusiasts and Vergil fans.
This is genuinely so beautiful, like it’s one of those reads that actually help you reflect and grow as a person lol I hope I don’t sound dramatic but getting to see into Vergil’s mind and soul like that was a very reflective experience and I enjoyed every second of it <3
