"Although bone is ubiquitous and vesatile, it is rarely seen in its living state, and hence is a bit mysterious.
Then after this marvelous mystery material has finished serving and protecting its original owner, it reveals itself in myriad places and for myriad purposes, sometimes hundreds of millions of years later. Bone has much to teach us about Earth's history and the course of animal life on the planet.
Additionallly, from the dawn of civilization, humankind has repurposed bone to serve and protect, even to amuse and inspire.
Bone's durability and ubiquity makes its revealed state [outside of the body] as interesting as its concealed state [inside of the body].
By the end of this book, you'll be convinced that it is the world's best building material."
The above quote (in italics) comes from this fascinating book by Roy Meals, M.D. He is a clinical professor of orthopedic surgery at UCLA. Meals is the author of several medical books. He has practiced, researched, and taught hand surgery for forty years.
To understand this book, it is helpful to understand what bone is. A bone is a rigid organ that constitutes part of the skeleton in vertebrate animals (including humans). Bones protect the other organs of the body, produces red and white blood cells, stores minerals, provides structure and support for the body, and makes mobility possible. Bones come in a variety of shapes and sizes and have complex internal and external structures. They are lightweight yet strong & hard and serve multiple functions.
To put it simply, this book demystifies bones (mainly human bones). It explores and extols this amazing material that supports and records vertebrate life. And Meals does all this with an accessible and fun narrative.
The first part of this book (nine chapters) deals with bones in the body (concealed bone) while part two (seven chapters) is concerned with bone outside the body (bone revealed).
In the bone concealed chapters, you get to brush up on your anatomy and in the bone reveled chapters, you'll see how bone reveals much about Earth's history and human activity.
Black and white photographs found throughout highlight this book's main narrative.
Finally, after finishing this book, it was apparent to me that bone is both an inheritance and a legacy. But more importantly, I was convinced that bone is the world's best building material.
In conclusion, this is a book about everything bone. It illuminates our bodies' essential framework!!
