This is the best space opera I have ever read. It has been the sort of book that has made me late for things. Brilliant plot, characters. Absolutely great read.

I really enjoyed this space opera! The development of the storyline allowed each character (including the AI) to shine. The impact of crises and the steps involved in finding solutions lends credibility to the characters and adds dimension to the story. Battles exist in all walks of life and how each perspective gives clues to their individual logic is interesting. I can't wait to get the next book.

From despair to hope

Great adventure with many unpredictable twists and turns. From a common yet skilled man, John Pike, comes a struggle for freedom. Not just for John Pike but all humanity and other intelligent forms from the four corners of the universe. They struggle in a cosmic game between three ascended races that only inhabit technology. What will be the outcome of this great struggle. With John Pike's leadership there my be home and a future.

Jon Like is an emissary for good.

After reading books1-8 of this series, I believe that the Human race is ensured of the ability to undertake anything that is sent out way. Making friends and mutual agreements is something we have been doing for centuries.

Wild ride

Good character development throughout the series with back story input. Main character is very likeable, and seems like the typical hero but has enough twists to keep him interesting. The behind the scene questions are one of the reasons I keep reading. Also the big three super races are total assholes.

Some of the names are to hard. There was a lot of action. I like the colonies from the asteroids. They were like gypsies. I would recommend this series of books to anyone that likes space science fiction .

Great series

I really enjoyed this series with all the twists and turns. I would have given it 5 stars but there were so many grammar and spelling errors it became irritating. I highlighted every one I could find.

Can Jon Pike survive?

Great characters human and alien. Humanity needs allies. Conflicts arise across starsystems. This is one of the best of the 'Space operas'.

The Pike Chronicles Books 1-8 - A Space Opera Adventure by G.P. Hudson

Humanity is slowly crawling out from under the rubble of 500 years of subjugation by an alien race, and is establishing an uneasy relationship with their new, equally alien, liberators. Against this background, Jon Pike, “a war hero who has lost everything” survives an assassination attempt and apparently on the same day is appointed to command an expedition to find lost human colonies. His good judgment starts to shine through immediately, because when you’re being given an assignment critical to humanity’s future, you’d obviously not mention the whole someone-tried-to-kill-me-just-now thing, right?

Within a short time, this fantastic blend of foresight and tactical acumen lead him to...utterly preventable defeat and the apparent death of everyone he cared about (a slim list, to be fair.) Book 2 opens with him sulking and being pointlessly rude to the crew who’s rescued him from certain death in the deep space equivalent of a life boat, and who he repays with snarls and by making a bad situation worse. I’m sure this catastrophe was designed to set up a redemption arc, but Pike comes across as hopelessly shallow and I lost interest.

I had mixed feeling about putting this down, because there are some promising characters and the plot had all the raw material for a great story. My theory, though, is that once again the need to churn out pages and multiple volumes won out over the craft of writing. This is always disappointing, and particularly here where there were unusual glimmers of potential. Nonetheless, stopped reading at 347 pages out of 2122, or 16% done.

You get a LOT of reading with this one!

The story starts out fairly standard and then starts taking unexpected twists and turns every page. Just when you think you have a handle on the good guys and bad guys, the game changes and there is another bunch of bad guys and the rules change. Just when you think the writer has written himself into a corner from which there is no escape, things happen and the game changes again.

The beginning of the story is one guy. By book eight, it is galaxy spanning good, bad, and ugly.

The conclusion to the seer's story line was a bit rushed and lame.

Whenever I read a story that involves "destiny" or "chosen ones", I get a bit wary. This story has that, but deals with it in a reasonable manner.

Well worth reading!

This was a tough one. It started off fairly well, but I put it down as an EMERGENCY ONLY read when the Protagonist, a ship captain attacked a planet with his (single) ship in order to rescue people he had never met because he might be falling in love with one of them after her husbands ship (they're pirate/reivers) dies attacking him. Hmmmmmmm.... complicated, strange, crazy even... but seriously? Who attacks a planet in a foreign galaxy, with one ship? I love a good adventure, but one based on idiocy is hard to fathom. Maybe it gets better, but its going to take quite a few vodka gimlets, and I don't really drink. I knew there was a reason the whole series cost $0.99!

Listen, for $0.99 how can you go wrong?
The beginning 8 books of the series! Come on! It's a great way to get you hooked to buy the rest of the story. I'm on book 9 right now.
I'm totally enjoying Mr. Hudson's Pike Chronicles. Every time I think I know where the story is going, he throws in another off shoot of the story which perks your interest even more.
Great Series!

stars lost for horrid editing

I really enjoyed the first six books, in spite of the lousy editng, but the story line and editing both worsened by book 7, and I was quite unhappy by book 8, and basically skim read it. I won't bother with any more. Sad.

Very good plot, character development and use of technology, religion and cultures, spanning galaxies. No more to write, just completing the required number of words to submit review.

First 2/3 was good!

Last 1/3 was slow and seemed like more of an editorial on religion. However, I did like the AI story line.

Fun Space Opera with many twists and turns. Accepting the many new inventions from book to book, the current science was a bit soft for my liking.
