Multiple reports of Intermittent Explosive Disorder Syndrome (IEDS) began to surface from an undisclosed military installation east of Las Vegas, Nevada.
Three days later, an angered Florida man entered a Miami assisted living facility and killed four elderly residents. He is said to have “Eaten the faces and necks” of his victims.
Within fifteen days, the death toll attributed to the mysterious outbreak of IEDS climbed to nearly five thousand. News outlets tried to warn the public “Not to panic”, and that these “Random occurrences” were simply “Isolated events.” They were wrong.
Within days, the media claimed that the virus had spread to nearly every corner of the planet. The infection took hold quickly. Millions perished. The devastation was almost immediate. Law enforcement fell, utilities powered down, and civilization was irreversibly shattered. With no structure left in the world, the remaining few sought to band together to fight and survive in this new existence.
That was five years ago … although not much has changed since that fateful day.
There was hope, however fleeting, when three years ago a cure was believed to have finally been found. However, the virus inexplicably began to mutate. The infected now turned much quicker, sometimes within minutes, and their new ravenous hunger was only surpassed by their voracious thirst for violence and their increasing detachment from physical stimuli.
The world was again different, and those left behind were forced to adapt. They created settlements, planted crops, and began to understand how to harness the power of the sun. It was slow, but it was something. It was progress, even if it seemed like all they did was eat, sleep, and battle the dead.
Things may never get back to the way they once were, but for those who remained, just the hope of a better life was sometimes their only motivation. And although it was far from perfect, they weren’t about to give up.
The Dead Years – New Dawn follows Mason Thomas, as he and a small group of survivors fight to stay alive at the end of the world. This is their story …
Jeff Olah is the author and creator of the best-selling series The Dead Years, The Last Outbreak, and The Next World. He writes for all those readers who love good post-apocalyptic, supernatural horror, and dystopian/science fiction.
His thirst for detailed story lines and shocking plot twists has been fueled over the years by stories from Cormac McCarthy, Ray Bradbury, and Stephen King. He also has a difficult time tearing himself away from character driven dramas like The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, and LOST.
Jeff is addicted to reading, writing, and lifting weights. He lives in Southern California with his wife, daughter, and ten-year-old Chihuahua.
This is the kind of zombie story I like best! It is not about the zombies, it's about the people, and some can be more deadly than the zombies.
I was happy to meet Mason who has a tragic backstory. Yet he is still out there leading a group of people, hoping to find safety for more than a few days.
Ava is a young woman who I'm hoping to see more of. I get glimpses of what could be a badass.
This story has characters you will care about and it leaves us wanting more, wanting to know what comes next and who will survive. Just the kind of story I like!
I've read a few of Jeff Olah's books and they're all pretty good. This book has some nice twists at the end. I would definitely recommend reading if you're a fan of the post-apocalyptic / zombie genre of books. I enjoyed this because it's set more after the initial outbreak and deals with making a permanent home in the world rather than trying to change the world. Looking forward to the next one.
I gave this book 5-star because I was basing my rating on the entire series. I’m not sure if this is the ending of the series but I’m assuming it is. Which is fine , it is a beautiful ending. My only complaint was that there was no mention of Eleanor, Jack and Elizabeth and barely a mention of Sean and Megan who were all main Characters. It would be nice to see what happened to characters who I felt an investment in.
This book delivers everything one could expect from Jeff Olah. A page-turner with twist and turns and full blown characters who are so real. The ending is so unexpected that waiting even a few minutes, not to mention a few weeks, seems an impossibility. Bring it!
I chose five stars simply because it is a great story, it's entertaining, well written and suspenseful. I have always looked forward to new books by this author and have never been disappointed.
As always, a good read. 👍 Characters seem familiar, Blackmore rings a bell as does the name Marcus Goodwin. Really interested to see where the author is going nect...
The entire series was great! The characters were believable & the storyline kept it interesting. I recommend this series for those who like this genre.
