Portraits in Blue #1

The Sun Rose in Paris

Rate this book
When a chance foray into the midst of the 1930s Parisian art world ignites passions Jack did not know existed, how can he possibly go home? Jack has been praised all his life for his extraordinary artistic talent and is rarely seen without his sketchpad. However, in Jack’s world art is deemed a hobby - men are expected to support their families with steady jobs that offered solid prospects for advancement.Future responsibilities are far from Jack’s thoughts, however, as he departs Australian shores for a six-month holiday visiting relatives in London.

On the ocean crossing, Jack meets fellow artist Margaret Bell, who enthusiastically appoints herself his mentor. She introduces Jack to a bohemian world where lives are dictated by passions rather than social conventions, and Jack is persuaded to enrol in Paris’ esteemed Académie Julian.

Arriving in Paris, Jack meets Andrés, an earnest young Spaniard, and his astute twin sister, Sofia, whose dark eyes and sweet smile captivate Jack’s heart. Together, the trio experience Paris at the height of its golden age, and Jack has never felt so happy.

When Jack’s talent is recognised by renowned art patron, Gertrude Stein, he is further inspired, whilst an opportune encounter with Picasso elicits unsettling advice. As Jack experiences both the wonder and turmoil of perfect love, he cannot ignore his responsibilities, conceding the life he is leading is but a temporary aberration.

Tragedy threatens and Jack wrestles with an agonizing decision: should he follow the well-laid plans for his future in Australia, or pursue a path offering only uncertainty?

Can Jack defy the expectations of a lifetime to follow his passion?

Portraits in Blue – Book 1: The Sun Rose in Paris is the first of a trilogy that traverses bohemian art worlds, including the Bloomsburys’ Sussex, Hemmingway's Paris, Picasso's Malaga and the Montsalvat artists in Eltham, in an epic tale of romance, passion and heartbreak amid art, family and true love.

I have loved reading all of my life, living in school libraries, and like 'Matilda' walked up the steps of the Camberwell library as a five year old, where the very kind librarian gave me a library card and allowed me to borrow 'Ping'.
I always thought I had a book inside me, bursting to be released, and in 2017 the muse revealed herself! The Sun Rose in Paris came, almost fully formed and I combined things that mattered to me: a passion for art, a yearning to travel, a desire to remember a family tragedy that would be lost in time and a beautiful romance. One book became two, and then I knew it needed a little more, so came book three. But unanswered questions still remained... why did she go and where? Hence Sofia's Story was written.
The writing journey has taken me into some wonderful research journeys, interact with people all over the world, and feel a wonderful sense of accomplishment!

It has also led to a growing list of books that I must write! If only there were 48 hours in a day!

After Jack Tomlinson received the astonishing gift from his parents, it wasn’t long before he set sail on a cruise ship, bound for England. Six months in London, staying with his mother’s sister and her husband – Jack couldn’t believe it was happening. It was 1928 and Jack lived with his parents in Melbourne. His father had a job lined up for him, but this trip of a lifetime and his painting and sketching would expand with the new places to see and visit. Jack had great talent but had never been taught; he also didn’t see how good he was. But that was to change.

The meeting with Margaret Bell on board the ship would prove to be fortuitous as she introduced Jack into the art world. An artist herself, Margaret had confidence and an ability to make friends with anyone she met. After some time in London, Jack was enrolled into the Académie Julian in Paris by a good friend of Margaret’s. They knew Jack would go far. And he did, meeting another young artist, Andrés, at their daily classes. Andrés had a twin sister who worked in their aunt’s café and the three of them became firm friends. Would Jack return to Australia when it was time to leave? Or would fate take him in a different direction?

The Sun Rose in Paris is the first in the Portraits in Blue series, and the debut novel for Aussie author Penny Fields-Schneider and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Beautiful descriptions filled the pages - across the ocean, throughout London then on the streets of Paris. Jack was a very naïve young man when he started his adventures, and I’m looking forward to seeing him mature further when I read #2. A satisfying read, The Sun Rose in Paris is one I recommend.

It is 1928 in Melbourne and young Jack Tomlinson boards a cruise liner to England to visit his family in London. Jack's hobby is art and on the cruise he spends most of his time drawing the people he sees on board. He meets Margaret who recognises his talents and introduces him to the art world in London and Paris.

That is a brief recap of the story but it is accompanied by some beautiful descriptions of life on board and even better ones once Jack arrives in Paris. He meets many famous people, eats at amazing restaurants, becomes a brilliant painter and falls in love. Therein lies my problem with the book. It was all much too easy and too perfect. I felt like someone who had eaten too much glorious Parisian food. Overindulged, sleepy yet ready for some action. Something bad had to happen.

But it did not. So I finished the book feeling it had not really reached its full potential. I see that it begins a series but probably will not follow it up.

The book is about a guy Jack who has been an artist since he was a kid. His artistic skills were well recognized by Margaret when she met him for the first time as Jack was sketching while sitting on the deck of the ship. Margaret didn’t hesitate to appreciate his artwork. She further promised to introduce him to her distant uncle famous for the artwork.
They meet finally and Jack gets admission to one of the colleges to pursue his passion for art. His parents didn’t like his decision but creative people hardly listen to anyone else. On his journey of exploring different artwork, he came across Picasso and cracked some real time heart-to-heart conversations.
I am sharing one of the excerpts I loved the most from this book:
Picasso chuckled. ‘But we artists are not about money. Not real artists. A painter may pursue money, but not an artist. We must tell a story, and not all stories are nice. Do you see? Life is not always nice. Art is more than beauty. It is also truth. Not all truth is nice. Your brush, your lines, your colour must expose the truth. Not from here, ‘he said with a soft tap on Jack’s head. ‘But from here.’ And his hand moved to Jack’s chest.
Jack fell in love with Sofia and she didn’t have anybody else in this world except her brother Andre. At the suggestion of Margaret, Jack proposed to Sofia and they both fall in love rather they were in love they just needed time to confess that to each other.
Jack, after completion of his course, makes his journey back to his abode and Sofia stays with Andre as he falls sick due to the Spanish flu damage done to his heart when he was just fifteen years old.

*I have started reading the second part now.

A feast for the senses!

This is a writer who brings the visual senses to live from the written word. I was entirely captivated as I read this story of a young Australian man who leaves his home in Melbourne to sail to London as gifted by his parents. The idea behind their gift is to give him a three-month trip after his graduation from school and prior to him taking up a position in finance at his father's firm.

Jack is an artist at heart and is very good. His life, though, has been carefully planned out for him to basically follow in his father's footsteps which Jack feels is a path he must accept.

In the shop to London Jack meets a fellow artist who encouraged his artistic side after seeing him sketching and painting on board. This is a life-altering meeting which opens up the world of the early 20th century bohemian art culture in Europe, opening his senses to life and art expression

The writing is excellent. Descriptions of the various art movements and scenes and locations is breathtaking. The characters are richly described. Many are famous.

I have already downloaded the next book of this series and want to begin reading it immediately as the storyline has progressed to hold my interest and wish to continue this fascinating story.

I recommend to readers of historical fiction, art and romance.

Very dull story. I found myself skipping over paragraphs just to get through it and then I just decided to quit. I also found one grammar mistake and a random period in the middle of a sentence. Ugh!

I really enjoyed this book. The story and the characters are wonderful. Jack from Australia has always loved to draw, and has just graduated from secondary school. His future is to work with his Father, and has been promised a position in the company. His parents give him an overseas present to take a ship to England to stay with his Aunt and Uncle. On the cruise Jack meets a wonderful women who is quite taken with Jack’s art work. He does a beautiful portrait of her, and as she has connections in the art world, his original planned trip takes a totally different path. This is a book about following your dream and the amazing connections that can occur if you do. Loved it.

A very enjoyable read.

Amateur artist Jack grew up in a conservative household in suburban Melbourne in the early 20th century. He had a guaranteed career in the company where his father worked. When he turned 18, his parents sent him on a voyage to London for a six month holiday; on the ship he met a woman who would change his life.
He is taken from London to Sussex and the famous Bloomsbury group, and on to the art world in Paris, where his life is turned upside down.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story; it is well written, and despite a couple of editing mistakes, I am more than happy to award 5*.

Near the end of the book Jack read a letter from his mother who he had been away from for far longer than either of them had ever believed they would be and ".... as soon as he started to read it it was as though his mother stood before him." I felt the same way when I was reading this book. I was swept along by the descriptions of Jack's life in Australia as a new graduate and a man passionate about painting. I felt the love and security of living with his parents and could identify with them as they sought to set their son up for a safe and successful future. I felt Jack's confusion as he was introduced to a new way of being after he met a group of bohemians who threw themselves into their passions and took chances. I felt his excitement and indecisiveness as he is offered a great opportunity in Paris. I learned a lot about painting and could see what he was creating as his painting is described almost brush stroke by brush stroke.
I highly recommend this book for a step back into the 1930s and the art world that you won't want to leave.

I enjoyed this story of a Jack, a young Australian who is given the gift of a trip to England to visit his aunt and uncle before settling into a job at the firm where his father works. They did not imagine him meeting Margaret, a whirlwind character determined to see that Jack pursues his talent as an artist. Meeting with her unconventional family, Jack is thrown into the art world of Paris. He is thrilled to be in the midst of people devoted to their art, but does not really see it as being who he is, and his parents expectations of him are all he has known. An enjoyable ride through the streets of Paris in the 1930's where art is undergoing a changed of definition. I thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere and the experiences that Jack had in Paris. Well done Penny Fields-Schneider for a first novel and I appreciate the free copy of the first book in the series. Thank you.

A sweet, enjoyable novel about a young Australian artist’s coming of age in 1930’s Paris. The book has a lovely flow and well describes the ambiance of Paris and the notables who inhabited it during the golden years between the first and second world wars. Cameo performances by the Bloomsbury Group sisters Vanessa Bell and Virginia Wolf, and art legend Roger Fry, whom Jack is introduced to while visiting his aunt and uncle in London. Jack makes an impression on Frye, and before he knows it, he’s off studying art in Paris, where he’ll find love and friendship and be lucky enough to meet some of the icons, including Picasso, Gertrude Stein, and Ernest Hemingway that called the City of Light their home. This is the first in a three-book series, and a lovely peek into a world gone by.

As an artist I was in love with this book from beginning to end! I adore historical fiction and she nailed this story and made me go research the artists I didn’t know and look again at the works of ones I did. Thanks! I want more!

Art in Paris

This book gave a fairly detailed look at both London and Paris, the art world and young artists. The characters develop as they have new adventures, in galleries, sightseeing, friendship, and love.

This book was good. I enjoyed it. The story was simple…a young man coming of age. The characters were believable and interesting, aside from the fact that the main female of course was a perfect beauty. I enjoyed that such characters as Gertrude Stein, Hemingway, and Picasso made appearances. My problem with it was that it lacked a “central conflict.” Everything was too easy. Otherwise, it was a pleasant read.

Great story of love, friendship, and the wonderful artists in 1920s Paris

One of the best things about reading on a Kindle is the ability to pause, look things up on the internet, and return finding out you learned something new. This story incorporates fictional characters and their mingling with true life people. I had heard of all the artists, as they are world renowned, then found out that many of the other key peeps had really existed also. (I ended up ordering prints from art.com during the reading of this novel. 😀) The love story takes its time, and is sweet as it unfolds. The brassy Margaret, funny and beautiful Sofia, dashing Andres and Just Jack are characters that would have been fun to know. Very believable narrative, great little twist at the end.

THE SUN ROSE IN PARIS by Penny Fields-Schneider, first in the three-book Portraits in Blue series is one of the best I've read this year, self-published by the author. Jack grew up in a wealthy family in Australia, his future in banking secured by his father. But Jack has an uncommon gift as an artist, which he develops throughout his young years to a high degree. His parents give him a trip to his uncle and aunt's home in London as a graduation present. On board the ship he meets and falls under the spell of a somewhat older young woman, also a gifted artist, who recognizes and encourages his talent. In London she makes contacts for him and he extends his time away from home to take advantage of an extended period of study in Paris, where he further develops his gift and is recognized for his great promise. He befriends a Spanish artist also in the school and his twin sister, with whom he falls in love, and meets some of the greats in Paris at the time -- Picasso, Gertrude Stein, Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, all who recognize his potential and encourage him, and others. But there is uncertainty, risk, the possibility of heartache and loss, as a transition to book two in the series. The book is a delight to read, wonderful passages about art and artists, strong characters, interesting descriptions of people and places in London and Paris, plus one cable-TV rating level love scene. Looking forward to the next volume.

After World War 1, Jack is given a graduation present by his parents upon graduation. He has a job lined up at his father's company, but for six months, he will visit London, staying with an Aunt and Uncle.

On the ship, Jack breaks out his art supplies and starts drawing what he sees on-board. Margaret is an artist, 10 years older than Jack. She thinks he's very talented. She's on her way to visit family and friends in England. Margaret seeks Jack out and is determined to show off his talents to family members who are very involved in the world of art.

They find a way to get Jack into a prestigious art school in Paris. His talents get polished and he makes friends and influences people.

In the end, Jack finds that he loves art, he loves life and he loves a woman. This is an interesting book that gives us a peek into the world of art and life in London and Paris during that time period. There is a small bit of intimacy in the book, but it is mild. I enjoyed the story and I would recommend the book.

Having just finished The Sun Rose in Paris I cannot wait to start the second book Shattered Dreams!

This book was captivating and had me researching Artist's, historical paintings and European cities! I love when I read a book and am also taking in a wealth of knowledge of historical events and cultures.

Having very little knowledge of art this has increased my interest and I loved the friendships and dynamics between the characters!

An easy read, with a beautifully unfolding story of a young man’s journey to discovering the life he chooses to live, not the one expected of him.

Well written Penny, looking forward to seeing Jack's life unfold in the following novels.

Unbelievably Outstanding Book

This book was such a pleasure to read. There were ups and downs, but mainly lying ups. The book taught out easily life can be snuffed out. It also taught about how you can find companionship and love so unexpectedly. I thoroughly recommend this book series. Off to Book Two now. I can only hope it is as good as the first book, but I think there will be more sadness. Still well worth it.

Art adventures in Paris

Enjoyed the descriptive reading and character development. Reading how an Australian art student navigates an European Adventure from London to Paris. The art descriptions encourage the reader to research painters and their art. I normally do not read a book series, and this is a welcome book.

What a wonderful story of a young Australian man who is given the opportunity to go to London after finishing school. His talent for sketching and painting is “discovered” and he is taken into a whole new world. But...does he continue his art or go back to Australia to work in and office job that doesn’t interest him? A story of discovery. I thoroughly enjoyed this book!

Fancinating adventure in the art world

Jack is an adventurer! The story leads you to places that make you feel like you are there or want to go there. I have been to Paris and I loved the references to all the same places I visited. Can't wait to read book 2 and follow the adventure.
