Aedus Kamber is a humble peasant, trying to be as selfless as his parents were before they left to lie beneath the dirt. But one decision he believes will help a defenseless soul and the desires in himself has him fall into a royal death sentence. Locked in a dungeon, waiting for the day he'll die, he loses hope until a beautiful siren appears before him with perhaps a way to save him. Now Aedus, the siren Irina, and his friends must join together to seek four, unnatural keys to open the Chest of the Tide. Irina has promised this very chest holds a bounty that will both make Aedus rich and will clear his name. But not all of Irina’s motives may be as innocent as they seem. Join the journey inspired by the Greek myths of old to unveil the hidden, golden secrets awaiting between its bounds.
Chest of the Tide offers enough world-building to enchant and engage readers, and knows when to leave the rest to imagination. A great introduction to high fantasy for ages 10-15, especially those who already love renaissance Disney, Greek mythology, and anything in between.
A tad older than the target audience, I felt that several intense moments "babied" me. The story presented a political corruption theme, but only to the extent that a pre-teen could comfortably comprehend.
A personal note/experience from this read--I elevated my enjoyment tenfold when I envisioned the tale as an elementary-grade, theatrical performance. Several dialogues felt right at home in an auditorium.
This is a fast-paced adventure with unexpected twists and turns. Secrets are slowly and skillfully revealed-- and hints are dropped along the way--as the story's plot unfolds. Young adult readers will enjoy catching the connections to Greek mythology as they join the hero and his friends in their quest for the 4 magical keys.
Okay, so, I read Chest of the Tide back in 2020, but I didn't use GR then, so I'm fixing that now.
Chest of the Tide was a wonderful journey. There are magic users, an island of monsters, a magic island garden, a tyrant king at his wit's end enslaving his people, and a ragtag group of heroes searching for treasure. I tabbed just about everything. Also, the cover is absolutely gorgeous! I'll mostly be talking about the characters because I don't want to spoil too much of the plot. The characters also take inspiration from Greek mythology, so if you read, definitely try to figure out who is who! It's like a fun little game!
Okay, so the characters were so fun! I loved Davet, his personality was perfect. And Maria. I'm in love with her. She's such a badass, even though she's not traveling around with our cast of heroes. She's doing her own thing behind the scenes, trying to wrestle control from the tyrant king Tarit because she sees just how horrible he is.
Of course, the main character Aedus is the perfect MC for this book. He has a heart of gold in the midst of living in a kingdom with a tyrannical ruler. All he wants is to protect those he cares about, and though he's tricked into going on his journey, his intentions are pure. Irina, Aedus's love interest, is a siren with many secrets! But it's interesting how at war she is with herself.
I'm still sad about Fanny. She wasn't even really that important in the grand scheme of things, but she still held a special place in my heart, and now...well you'll know if you read it.
Of course, I don't want to spoil too much, but Chest of the Tide is a must-read! I definitely recommend it!
