This third book in the series brings us to Anne de Bourgh's marriage of convenience to James Sutherland. As the story opens, they are already recently married, and Anne is growing accustomed to living with her husband, his small son Barney, her mother-in-law Lady Beatrice, and her husband's uncle Obie, who is quite an odd duck. This is the gentlest and least eventful of the three books, and yet it's touching in that the affection grows between the two spouses, as does her affection for her young step-son. Anne has been lonely all her life, and she begins to discover what it's like to have a few people she can rely on. The conclusion is rousing, with a discovery of something Obie has been up to that causes quite a stir. All in all a very satisfying conclusion to the series.

In this Pride and Prejudice variation the story concludes. Anne de Bourgh is now married to James Sutherland. How will the self-centred Anne cope.
An entertaining and well-written story

Inside Darcy’s cousin Anne

I loved getting the inside view of the enigmatic Anne. And, I enjoyed seeing her blossom away from her overbearing mother. Good clean story. Civilized intellectual romance can still be quite sweet. Bravo.

"Book 3 of An Austen Ensemble
Anne de Bourgh is now Anne Sutherland, wife and mistress of Middlefinch, a large estate in the south of England. She is satisfied to have done so well for herself, and yet, she finds living with her husband and her new family rather more alarming than she expected.

Her new husband is far more casual than she expected--he gives his son rides on his shoulders, wrestles with the dogs, and concerns himself with all manner of hands-on farming duties.

His mother is an outdoors-woman, happier in the stables and kennels than anywhere else, and only too happy to relinquish the duties of mistress to inexperienced Anne.

And Mr. Sutherland's daft old uncle leads his own strange life on the third floor, emerging only to make disconcerting exclamations.

Even if she can grow accustomed to all this, there is still the matter of learning what to do with the kindness and affection of her husband. Anne has learned friendship; will she learn love?"

A sweet, gentle conclusion to this series. It was nice to see Anne come out from under the repression of her mother, Lady Catherine de Bourgh, to find friendship and love.

The expected tale I never knew I wanted

Fresh look on both Anne and Lady Catherine with multiple new characters that readers will get invested in. Albeit the ending did feel rushed, given that it was hinted that some parts of the marital duties were suspected to be too hard for Anne's health. Only to have a surprise at the end that was not built up to. Nonetheless, Lady Catherine got a far nicer ending than she probably deserved and that showed me my own vindictive nature.
If that is not good writing, I don't know what is.

enjoyable story

I found it interesting to consider Ann from both a nature and nurture perspective. I think the author did a great job with that, then growing her character from there. Also did well with Lady Catherine, keeping her as Canon. The uncle character was just a bit bizarre, so did not give 5

keep writing these!!

It was so fun to go through the stories knowing that another one was just around the corner. I love the new characters that have been introduced along the way. (I want a story about Silas!)

(My 3.5 stars is probably your 4.5 stars.) A very nice conclusion to the series -- well done, Ms. Garrett! -- and some wonderful development of Anne, about whom you know little but you're pretty sure you wouldn't want to know her (and you're wrong).
