Wowser! Coming Home by Lauren Lee was my first book by this author and it was a good one.
It wasn't a terribly long book. If I had started out earlier in the day, it would have been a one sitting book. But, I didn't start until almost bedtime. I read until I couldn't read anymore.
I like her writing style. She is concise and tells you what you need to know. There is not a lot of fluff. The story was engaging and interesting. Definitely a page turner. This is a really good detective story and if that is in your wheelhouse, you will be glad you picked up a copy of this book. I highly recommend it!
I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author for a fair and honest review.
One of the best books I have ever read. The story progressed at a fast pace keeping me intrigued. I enjoyed the twists and turns in the climax. Superb book.
The story line was interesting enough, but there was far too much introspection on the part of the lead character. Also, I skipped through page after page of descriptive passages for inconsequential occasions, such as getting dressed for the funeral of a murder victim. It's a book written for women readers rather than for everyone, so it's aimed at a sizeable market and will find its audience. I thought it lacked the main element of a thriller - thrills.
4.5 I started this book a couple of days ago. And skipped a few days of reading. But I finished over 80% of this book in 4 hours. I can’t wait to pick up the next one!
An alcoholic detective on indefinite administrative leave returns home for her step mother's funeral. A neighbor, a young woman the detective baby sat years before, is murdered and she insinuates herself into the investigation. The trip will take her down memory lane. She might solve the crime but it is questionable whether she will survive it.
This book s slowed by the main character's angst and unnecessary detail. She is neither likable nor sympathetic. The doer is easily identified. The alcoholic cop is a trope and a tiresome one at that. Not a whole lot of susoense.
Suspenseful start to Lee's newest series! With a relatable detective and a murder that needs to be solved, you'll find yourself quickly flipping pages to find out the truth. From start to finish, it is fast paced with many twists a turns. Looking forward to the next one!
👥CHARACTERS👥 •The MC detective is one of my favorite characters in a mystery/thriller in a long time. She was so fun and REAL! Real life problems dealt with in real life ways.
✨PROS✨ •Felt like an episode of my favorite show Law & Order SVU •Left you guessing on many occasions •Suspenseful ending leaving you wanting more
❌CONS❌ •It feels like this series does need to be read in order •I wish we knew more about some of the background of MC
Overall, I really liked this book and cannot wait to continue! It definitely leaves you with your jaw on the ground and wanting more.
The story of a woman returning home for her step mother's funeral. Then the body of a girl she used to babysit was found two doors down from her parents. Being a police woman on a break after her fiance' was murdered, she decided to investigate the girl's murder, and in doing so, was able to solve the case and barely get out alive. A very good story.
A bit depressing, though that's not surprising considering Elle's grief-induced alcoholism. The mystery was fair; I confirmed my suspicion of who did it when his workplace was revealed. There were some inconsistencies, such as: Is Elle on administrative leave? Did she quit? Was she fired? Sometimes it seemed the author wasn't sure.
I don't know if I'll try this series again or not. The last minute info for the next book was intriguing, but...we'll see. Definitely not a buy.
I enjoyed this book. I did, at points, began to question Elle's logic. I guess, in her present condition her thinking was slightly "impaired." That being said, I was still rooting for her the whole time and praying she didn't hurt herself or someone else, due to her carelessness. I'm glad that such an occurrence didn't take place. I would love to read book 2 in the series. The ending has me intrigued.
This was an okay story. Nothing really noteworthy and not really worth your time unless you’re needing a quick read. I became a little annoyed with the constant reminder that the FMC was grieving the loss of her fiancé and the climax of the story felt a bit rushed. I’m not sure if I’ll any more of this series but I am slightly intrigued to see how the story of how the fiancé died will play out so maybe I’ll read it.
This was a good story. All your emotions are used in this well written look at Elle, what happened to her, why she's on leave and why she has to find the murderer of her childhood friend. You learn about her life, her family and friends she hasn't seen since school. It's a quick read but an impressive one. This was my 1st book by this author but it won't be the last.
It was ok, the ending became painfully obvious by the end of the book. The FMC had an alcohol dependency and a dead ex and she will not let you forget it. The relationships seemed unnatural and I felt the story. Pups have done with a little more depth and some better editing. But overall it wasn’t awful and I enjoyed parts. 3 stars
The first part of the book was oh so slow. The main character is an alcoholic brought on by the death of someone she loved. She solved the murder and in doing so found a reason to fight her alcoholism.
The first two thirds of the book was quite slow and forgettable. The final third moved along at a good pace and brought the story along well, although it was unclear whether the story was about the alcoholic unemployed detective or the murders in her home town.
The Elle character is quite weak, not like able comparing to other characters in the story, Mom, Dad or Jack. She lives by begging sympathy from others. She should not be a detective working and she should be in AA.
Great storyline with quite a few ups and downs. Intriguing, a great whodunit. Some surprises not expected. Great and engaging characters. A not so surprising ending but all in all a good read.
This story kept you on your toes until the end. The main character Dahl is was fighting her demons of alcohol. Even so she was able to solve her friends murder. Loved the twist at the end. Can't wait to read the next book!
I really liked this story because it had a lot of elements that were different than most books I've read in recent years. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
The protagonist, Elle, has some likable features but her constant complaints about how her life is over with the death of her fiancé and her chronic alcohol use detracts from getting to know her better. Too much melodrama that detracted from the mystery for my taste
