Olipas tämä trilogian päätös ristiriitainen: yhtä aikaa tylsähkö ja groteski, hitaasti etenevä, mutta lopun käänteet tapahtuivat parissa sivussa.

Kääpiöpoika Greg matkaa ystävineen Venäjälle etsimään myyttistä amulettia, jota tavoittelee myös hänen entinen paras ystävänsä, haltija Edwin. Se, kuka amuletin ensimmäisenä löytää voi vaikuttaa siihen, jääkö magia maailmaan ja sitä käytetään joko hyvään tai pahaan, vai katoaako se jälleen. Tai näin ainakin vanhan legendan mukaan.

Tutkimusretki kesti neljä viidesosaa kirjasta, hyvin hidasta, joskin rikasta kerrontaa. Välissä tapahtui kohtaamisia muinaisten, myyttisten olentojen kanssa, jotka enimmäkseen päättyivät väkivaltaisesti. Lopun eeppinen taistelu oli verinen, mutta loppui jo parissa sivussa (ei ihan yhtä paha pannukakku kuin Twilightin loppuhuipennus).

En siis jäänyt kaipaamaan lisää gorea, mutta näin ison pohjustuksen ja jännitteen noston jälkeen tällainen pikakelaus oli vähän epätyydyttävää, eikä erään hahmon kuolema lisännyt syvyyttä tai herättänyt isommin tunteita. Olisin kaivannut loppuun vähän enemmän... noh, jotain.

It's a race to find a mythical amulet that will help the holder control magic that is creating an apocalypse on Earth and high tensions between dwarves and elves. Greg is quite happy to NOT be in charge of the entourage from the Dwarves, but just a contributing member. They are on their way to a magical forest in eastern Russia where the amulet is rumored to be hiding. There's a deadline AND the elves are also after the same thing. But then everything goes wrong. I mean, it's dwarves, what did you expect?

A satisfactory conclusion to the series. This one isn't quite as funny as the first book in the series, though there are still some comic moments. There are quite a few twists in here I didn't expect. And an epic final battle, that is a bit more serious than anything we've seen so far in this series (it ramps up to more Lord of the Rings level of fantasy violence). Those who like fantasy adventures with hapless heroes, should pick up this series. And those fans of mythology-based fantasies too.

Notes on content: No language issues (unless pissed is a no-no word in your culture, then about 3). No sexual content. As mentioned, several battles and lots of deaths mentioned, blood and gore are mentioned and somewhat described.

Kääpiöiden, haltioiden ja vähän kaikkien sota alkaa lähestyä eeppistä lakipistettään. Ja onneksi tässä taas palattiin vähän vetävämpään menoon. Kliseet kolisevat, mutta kokeneelle lukijalle niitä ei onneksi (useimmiten) yritetä kaupata neronleimauksina, vaan sopivalla sarkasmilla höystettynä. Ja ystävyydestä ja erilaisuuden sietämisestähän tämäkin sarja kertoo hyvin pitkälti, joten sarjalle kokonaisuudessaan kliseistä ja ajoittaisesta hölmöilystä huolimatta kolme tähteä pienellä ekstratuikkeella.

Honestly, I would've ended it differently. I never did like that Edwin. I wanted the elves to DIE. Or, you know, the good old and-then-they-all-died Narnia ending. Really ties up the loose strings, that one.

Todella hyvä päätös trilogialle. Kerrankin nuorten kirja, jossa tulee selkeä loppu ja siitä huolimatta omassa mielessä kirjan maailma jää elämään. Pienet avoimet asiat jäävät pyörimään takaraivoon ja saavat hymyn pilkettä aikaiseksi. 😁

I would give it a 3, but the kids overruled and demanded a 4. Had one of the funniest characters I've read in quite a while. Truly some laugh loud moments. The ending was simultaneously creative in its delivery and preachy in subject matter.

I had a lot of fun reading about all of Greg’s misadventures with my daughter. We got the first of the series in an OwlCrate Jr. box and have enjoyed the adventure and humor ever since.
