yo, despite the rushed beginning (had me thinking this was a race, yo ma where's the slow built up? naw?), this was an absolutely fantastic book. you want feels? you want drama? you want sadness? you want angst? you want an adorable kid? you want a seme who fucking knows how to treat his uke right? you want jealous bitches? you want tears? you want fluffy feels? you want a thick ass book that's over 400 pages? come right on over, the BL gods gotcha.

in this world, it's normal(ish) to see tigers, lions, and wolves w/ human-like characteristics and appearance roam the earth and live amongst their own countries. through war, these animals migrated to each other's land, sharing and assimilating to the other's culture. the book starts out w/ the golden wolf tribe of the country urka in war with the humans. the protagonist, diriya, is an orphan who grew up in a mountainous, isolated region of aslif, where it was customary for kids to be completely independent by the age of 12 and to leave the countryside to find work. diriya joined the war efforts at an early age, doing the cleaning, cooking, and grunt work until he turned 15 and became a soldier. when he was 17, the direction of the war was not going in the human's favor, so his commanders had this "fantastic" (hmmm) idea to use him as an offering piece to the beast king of urka in order to open room for negotiations. in other words, the king was free to use diriya's body as he wishes. here's the catch, that's what they wanted the enemy to think. the actual plan was for diriya to pleasure the king and when he has the chance, kill him, securing a win for the humans.

of course, diriya's survival was not guaranteed. but it's not like he cared much for his life anyways, and the military was going to pay him a large sum of money in exchange for his sacrifice which he had already planned to have it sent to the people of his home village.

what i didn't like about the beginning was how it quickly escalated out of fucking no where with him having sex with the beast king. like, how the hell did he get there? was it, "oh hey nice to meet you, sex" ???. it was literally a quick background story then BAM. i had to go back like did i miss... a page?? anyways, contrary to diriya's assumption about the beast king, he was gentle to him. the king was affectionate and patient and treated diriya with the kind touch he never had in his life. he wanted to be near this kind, loving warmth but he knew despite wanting to stay w/ this creature, he could never fit in with the golden wolves, and besides, he's the enemy. it’s a dream and he'll wake up as soon as he returns back to his country.

he escaped when he had the chance without killing the king, but for some reason, he felt incredibly sad as he departed. he wasn't sure why, but unbeknowgst to him, that beast was his fated one. and no matter how much he told himself to forget about that wolf, he couldn't. even when he learned of the king's death, he told himself if he couldn't forget him, then he'd at least won't think about him.

however, diriya became pregnant from their encounter. he decided to go through the pregnancy because it was "what the wolf gave him", a reminder of that kind and warm affection and love he received in that very short time. he choosed to not return back to his village and instead, thinking of the child's future, raise the newborn in the golden wolves tribe's country of urka, but in a town far from the city where there wasn't any discrimination towards humans.

mpreg is always interesting to me because of how badly the authors (and readers... aka me...) want mpreg to be a thing even though it's anatomically impossible. in this book, males of any species can be impreganated by the golden wolf. the golden wolf delivers his sperm through the bottom's rectum and once it reaches the colon, it morphs a separate pouch to be used as a womb to hold the baby. my thing is, no egg? also, i much prefer the uke having a 3rd hole than having a baby delivered "naturally" through the rectum, like germ nation anyone :/

unfortunately for diriya, he had a life threatening, painful, debilitating and intense labor which involved c-section and almost dying (i think at one point, his heart stopped). recovery wasn't easy but he was alone and he worked himself ragged to raise the kid he named ashu, who looks like a full-fledged golden wolf to diriya's relief. now ashu will have no problem living in urka and blending w/ the other wolves.

so we're now in present time. ashu is 5 years old, and diriya raises him to the best of his abilities, with the mindset that when he's no longer around, ashu will be okay. while diriya wears old, worn out clothes, he uses his money to buy ashu the best of clothes. he teaches ashu proper manners, and is incredibly strict with him. it caught me off guard in the beginning because ashu is very affectionate, hugging and saying how much he loves diriya, and diriya will just respond with, "thank you". who fucking replies with thank you when your kid says i love you??? diriya speaks in polite form to ashu while speaking casual form with everyone else and it's just. honestly, i felt sad. diriya doesn't smile at ashu and with the polite speech, it's like he was purposely putting a wall/placing a large distance between them - the way he talks to his kid felt very cold and odd. however, diriya really loves ashu and would do absolutely anything for him, but this is his own way of raising his child. everything diriya does is for a reason, even if his rational isn't always correct. after all, diriya is still a kid himself.

however, everything changed when diriya and ashu is surrounded by the royal military, capturing them and forcing them to endure a 3 day journey without any breaks to the palace. this is when... things get complicated and oh the drama. basically, the king had died years ago and his younger brother, yudoha, took his place in responsibility only (he is not the official king). the former king had left in his will to search for a red-headed human because that human is carrying his baby. in other words, ashu is the next in kin to be the future king. yudoha was going to meet diriya and ashu and hopefully bring them to the palace after explaining the situation, but there are factions that exist in their government and a big one is led by kushinada, the grandmother of yudoha and the former king. she plans on using ashu as a puppet so she can control the nation, and wanted to get her hands on him first, hence her ordering her men to capture the two before yudoha. this pisses the hell out of yudoha because her men hurt diriya during their journey back and didn't have any empathy and consideration for the child in the way they treated him.

there's a plot-twist where you learn the real truth about yudoha, but yudoha is definitely in my best seme list. he's everything.

diriya suffers a lot in this book, this kid cannot catch a fucking break. he reminds me of kaito from flesh and blood and riku from ai no mushi vol 2 in how just when you think things are gonna get better... it... hella doesn’t. over and over again. diriya’s self-sacrificial mentality, his bottled up suffocation in loneliness and fear, his physical and emotional strength to protect those he cares for, his independence, to put a brave face on no matter the situation, etc. there's A LOT to say about this character (his rational of duty and love, etc) and even though he seemed cold-hearted and distant in the beginning, you learn a lot about him as the book progresses. at the same time, he learns a lot about himself and others, and character development is certainly a thing here. and yes, i teared up in certain scenes.

also, yudoha and diriya. together. they are adorable. and their interactions with ashu. seriously. it warms my heart. i originally was going to rate it 4/5 because of the rushed beginning and the author's tendency to switch povs randomly mid-convo without any warning, but after reading this book and re-reading the beginning again, ah fuck it. i'm sighing with satisfaction, totally going to re-read this again. rarely do i ever buy the kindle to something and love it so much, i also order the physical right after. i just ordered the 1st volume from comi because a) physical, want and b) extra paper from comi. i also preordered the 2nd volume from comi so very excited to read the continuation!!!! the cover is so beautiful, wallpaper worthy for sure. actually, the cover to the 2nd volume is now my ipad mini’s home screen pic :’)

i can see why this book made it to the top 5 of kono bl ga yabai 2020. well worthy of its spot.

read and weep and sigh from the fluff. until next volume!
