Spies and Lovers #4

A Sinful Surrender

Rate this book
A debutante, a disgraced lord, and a dead body. A disaster... or the grimmest meet-cute in Regency London?

Miss Delilah Bancroft has a problem. A sizable and rather bloody one. Namely, a dead man on the library floor. She’d only wished for a moment of solitude out of the glaring eyes of Society. Instead, she’s caught red-handed (unfortunately, literally) by an attractive stranger. Is he her salvation or ruination?

Marcus, Lord Wyndam has inherited a decrepit castle and a tainted title. During his desperate search for evidence to silence whispers of treason against his father, he stumbles across a woman holding a deadly stiletto over a body. Is she murderer or pawn? What he knows for sure is that she is his only link to the truth. With enemies beating down the door, he spirits her from the scene before she is discovered with blood on her hands—and her pretty white debutante dress—to unearth her part in the grisly plot.

Delilah proves herself to be a woman of wit and courage as well as beauty, and as the only person who might be able to identify the man behind the plot that destroyed his father, Marcus must keep her close. Even if he has to ruin her to do it.

Contains a lady who longs for adventure, a man of honor who longs for respectability, and a head long rush through London’s ballrooms on the hunt for both. Will they live to love another day?

A new-to-me author. Grabbed it from Kindle for 0.99¢. The writing style is good and simplistic. I hate to say this, but the plot is exceedingly dull. I just couldn't be bothered to continue.

My review :

When everything looks grim around her, will going out her comfort zone leads her to disaster or happiness...

I am a historical romance reader but strangely my first read by Mrs Laura Trentham was a contemporary from her Highland, Georgia series.
And while I liked enough this previous book, I just fell in love with this one. It has everything I love in a historical romance, a miss able to think despite the circumstances, a hero clever and kind not too much on the alpha side, a mystery and good side characters.
Delilah has become the demure miss her mother pressed her to be, so much she lost all her wits and puns to only appear as a pawn in her mother’s scheme for a grander future. Until she jumps right in a Clue game, with her life at stake.
At the beginning, I feared she would swoon or lost her wits, and while she at time took a bit too long to decide if she should trust Marcus or not, she finally chooses the right path.
I loved to see her grow and reawaken her old self, the one more daring and lively. She is a heroine as I like them, not perfect, with her own doubts and misconceptions but with Marcus, she reveals herself and flourishes.
Marcus is a kind man, not the alpha type “you Jane, me Tarzan”. He supports Delilah and cheers when she stands for herself. Despite the title he inherited, he was never raised to become a peer, why he has other dreams and does not really miss his family wealth. But he can’t stand to have his name dishonored.
Why his quest for the truth, with the hope to restore his family name and give his dreams a grip for his future.
I loved they were far from perfect, failable. Mrs Laura Trentham paints them with insecurities, hopes, flaws but a heart bigger than them. Their interactions moved from fun to sweet then scorching hot while they deepened their bound and get to learn to know one another.
This 5 stars read will charm and enchant any romance lover.

I was granted an advance copy by the author and purchased my own.
Here is my true and unbiased opinion.

Good plot, with some very uncomfortable moments for a newly introduced couple. I liked the setting with them attracted, not denying themselves but not actually falling in love. She had allowed herself to be bullied, and meeting the H helped her to find herself again. She had to fight for him despite her doubts and while he wanted her, he had very little to offer. I liked them and the practical plot.

Thoroughly enjoyed this couple. Continuing on in the Spy series has a nice blend of romance and intrigue. Each book is a standalone. There are many reviews that could do better Justice the book so I suggest reading those. I loved how meeting over the body and going out the window were used frequently in their relationship to reference trusting each other, teamwork. I appreciated that she didn't have much experience riding, usually most heroines are good Riders and if their fathers came into money they were put on the best horses.

I'm so glad this book was as good as the first! I was a little worried after not connecting with book 3 in this series. However, book 4 brought me right back into this amazing world. This particular novel had a lovely balance of romance and action. Both of those plot points played important parts into making this book so good.

It also had some of my favorite tropes in historical's: wallflowers, class difference, and marriage of convenience.

I enjoyed both Marcus and Delilah. Neither was annoying or did anything super foolish. They worked together as a team and there wasn't much angst or drama between them. Sometimes that can be boring, but in this particular novel it worked to the story's advantage. I also really felt that they truly cared for each other and were in their relationship for the long haul.

Happy to be continuing on with this series!

👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

Another good romantic historical mystery from Ms. Trentham.

I was a little less enthralled as the story lended more towards the physical interaction between the two characters than previous books in the series. I did enjoy the story but was hoping for more focus on restitution for the fallen father’s reputation. But it was a good read.

There you have it. It’s what you’ve been waiting for, certainly what I’ve been waiting for. Barely into the story and here it is, another Laura Trentham romantic masterpiece - sweet, poetic, and steamy. Very, very steamy. You’ll quickly become fully immersed in the story and never want to leave.

A Sinful Surrender is the fourth entry in the Spies and Lovers series and begins with a young woman hiding in a library to escape some cruel remarks she has overheard being made about her. Others enter and she hides behind the curtain as an argument and attack take place. When she finally dares to venture out she discovers a dead man, and just when she picks up the murder weapon in an attempt to help the victim a handsome young man barrels through the window and catches her standing there. What a pair. An innocent but adventurous debutante who often underestimates herself but longs for excitement and love and feels that somehow there must be more ahead for her than just settling for Society Life. A disgraced lord with a tarnished name, a dilapidated estate and short of funds but earnest, honest, determined to find out more about his late father and clear his name. And did I mention breathtakingly handsome? They literally stumble upon one another. Delilah doesn’t know if she can trust Marcus or not but he’s her escape from imminent danger, and she doesn’t understand it but finds herself powerless to pull away from him: when near him even her hair felt alive for heaven’s sake! Marcus needs to keep her close to find out if she knows who committed the crime and can be the link to clear his family name. And by the way, Marcus for his part goes all poetic around her, too: “A lady like Delilah should be kissed for the first time under a sun-dappled oak with a spring breeze ruffling her hair” Well, poetic and some other reactions.

It’s not going to be easy for these two. Delilah’s father is a businessman and the only way to get into society is through her hefty dowry. Her mother does not like Marcus and wants Delilah safely married to a “gentleman” of their choosing. The safe route. Her parents are overprotective since her brother died, but don’t really hold her in much esteem. They just want to marry her off, thinking she will be lucky to take whichever man offers marriage (and gets that huge dowry). And then here comes Marcus, through the window, while she is standing next to a corpse. What follows is exciting and dangerous and funny – and did I mention steamy?

Marcus and Delilah take extreme and scandalous measures to get to the bottom of the mystery, the murder, clear the Wyndam family name, and keep each other safe. And all the while their attraction grows stronger and stronger and sweeter and sweeter: “If Mrs. Bancroft hadn’t been eviscerating him to the spine with her gaze, he would have taken Delilah’s hand and laid it over his heart.” How can you not sigh when you read that?

Author Laura Trentham writes one heck of a romance, whether historical or contemporary. The characters are richly drawn and the relationships feel so real and true. And they are funny and brave and foolish and totally lovable (except for the bad guys, of course). You’ll laugh and sigh and worry over their fates. The story is fast moving and you aren’t sure what will happen next and can’t put the book down until you find out.

Thanks to the author for providing an advance copy of A Sinful Surrender in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own. I love this series; I love everything Laura Trentham writes and I recommend it all without hesitation.

a charming compatible couple

From the beginning of their meeting there was compatibility, and chemistry. Delilah and Marcus didn’t fit the expectations of the ton but they fit together and fate brought them together. This book moves rapidly and is an easy casual charming read. They are a cute couple and as heroines go Delilah is amazing. She’s intelligent, witty, emotionally strong, logical and has common sense. She’s not impulsive but adventuresome. Marcus is intelligent, strong, resourceful and respectful, but in a normal way. He’s not a trained spy or a trained Earl. He was raised in Ireland as a horse breeder. The circumstances that cause them to meet are dire and the story pulses with danger at every turn. It’s a very happy enjoyable read.

Middling. I appreciate that an author tried to give readers a story involving danger and intrigue: it was, however, weak in conception and execution. I liked the initial attraction and growing rapport between Marcus and Delilah: they were, however, totally hopeless at unraveling mysteries and defending themselves (alas, if only Marcus had armed himself with a handy turnip before entering the stables at the end). As a matter of fact, the longer I write this review, the hokier the story gets in my memory. And yet, there were moments of humor and charm to be found amidst the bungling plot and graphic sex and basic writing skills of the author, so it wasn’t a total loss.

A quick read with everything you want- adventure, action, mystery and romance. Delilah is full of courage and strength- a heroin you can truly admire. Marcus has cowboy vibes. He’s handsome, brave and has a cinnamon roll centre. The romance is a 6/10 in spice and so healthy. Like incredibly healthy from the beginning. Marcus respects, values and loves Delilah from the start- and he has no issues expressing it. Delilah’s simple, innocent devotion to Marcus is charming. She loves him, sees his worth and believes him so simply- with good reason.

Overall this was a truly enjoyable read. It went fast, and was easy to get immersed in. 5/5

Great addition to the series,

Delilah and Marcus' story was mysterious and intriguing. She was a passable debutante and he was not a passable earl due to scandal with his father. Delilah seems to have been dropped into the middle of the scandal, the adventures county's throughout the book to a happy ending. Enjoy!

Good addition to the series

Marcus and Delilah were a wonderful addition to the series. Delilah is a strong and levelheaded woman. Marcus is an honorable man trying to do his best, given what happened with his father.

WOW!!! I loved, loved, loved A Sinful Surrender by Laura Trentham, book four in her Spies and Lovers series. This story has the all the fixings one would expect from a historical suspense. We have the mystery when Delilah Bancroft overhears a murder occuring while hiding away in a library. Then there’s the hero, Marcus, Lord Wyndam, who is desparately searching for evidence to clear his late father from the rumors of treason when he encounters Delilah red-handed, holding a deadly stiletto over the body. Being the gentleman, he helps her escape the scene before she is discovered with blood on her hands and white debutante dress. Delilah is not the delicate flower her parents think she is; she is intelligent, courageous, and beautiful. Marcus is hopeful that she can identify the man behind the plot that ruined his father. That means he must keep Delilah close to him, even if he has to ruin her in order to do so; which is not as difficult as it sounds. I loved the sense of adventure Delilah had, as well as her ability to adapt to whatever situation she found herself in. Marcus was a true gentleman, not that it stopped him from enjoying himself with Delilah.

I really loved reading this book and had a great deal of trouble putting this book down. Ms. Trentham wrote a beautiful love story that is not to be missed. She provided a tale rich with She provided a tale rich with kindness, magnetic attraction, off the charts chemistry, amusing conversations, and endearing characters giving Delilah and Marcus a chance at finding a forever love. I highly recommend A Sinful Surrender to other readers.

An exciting Regency romance that keeps one in suspense, this novel engaged me at every level from the opening paragraphs. Delilah Bancroft knows that apart from her hefty dowry, she is no catch as the daughter of a cit. However, after overhearing a disparaging conversation about herself, she finds herself taking refuge in a library. Alas, the peace she is looking for evades her when she is discovered with a dead man at her feet. Marcus, the Earl of Wyndam quickly takes the situation in and knowing that Delilah is in danger, persuades her to flee with him. Certainly from then on, the adventure-loving Delilah gets far more excitement than she anticipated. With her feelings growing stronger for Lord Wyndam by the day, she realises that she cannot settle for second best, despite her parents' wishes for a reputable match. Marcus is desperate to discover the truth about his father's death and although he knows he is putting Delilah at risk, he cannot afford to let her go in case she is able to identify the man that engineered his father's disgrace. The plot is well written and thought out, and I love the main characters who despite being somewhat flawed, are determined to get answers that will bring the truth to light. I would have liked to know that Marcus' father had been cleared of wrong-doing and hopefully the answers will come in a later episode of this series. I received a copy of this book as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.

This is the fourth book in the series & it could easily be read on its own. Fast paced, strong characters & a story that drew me in from the start & held me totally captivated until the end. I love the author’s books, no matter what genre she writes she delivers but it’s her historical books which are my favourite probably because historical romances are my go to genre. I loved both Delilah & Marcus & loved the journey this engrossing read took me on. I just loved it.
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

A Sinful Surrender is part of the Spies and Lovers series, this is book 4 and I have not read the previous books so each is a complete standalone. I love Laura Trentham’s writing and have read several of her other books and this one does not disappoint. Full of mystery and intrigue, twists and turns. The only thing I could critique harshly for this book was that I wanted more story! It did seem to finish rather quickly for me after the heart pounding romp the reader will go on with Delilah and Marcus. Delilah is not your everyday sophisticated debutante and she prides herself on being different, yet she is very inexperienced and sheltered. Marcus is trying to right his father’s wrong and clear his family name. So both of them are outsiders which doesn’t bother either in the least however they must navigate the tricky waters of the ton in London society as a team despite forces trying to break them apart. Trentham is a superb writer and you wont be disappointed by any of her novels, especially this one.

Delilah is so strong and very adventurous. She is trying to conform the way her mother wants her to, but it is very hard. When she hears one of her suitors making some disparaging remarks about her, she just wants some alone time. She is at a very crowded ball and so she ducks into a room. While there she stumbles onto several things that will change her life. She still wanted adventure, well, she got it. Marcus is only trying to clear his father's name when he comes across a woman standing over a dead man, holding the knife and blood all over her. He knows that she has information that he needs and so he helps her escape without anyone seeing her. What he didn't expect was to come to care for this courageous woman. He is penniless, will she forsake her cushy life to be with him?

I liked Delilah & Marcus. They are a sweet couple. They love each other & respect each other. Delilah is a strong woman & Marcus is just perfect for her. It's a love story. Though there's a subplot of a murder for which the murderer is pursuing Delilah, as she is the key witness. But, that never takes the forefront until the very end. Moreover, the thriller part was pretty predictable.

But all well that ends well. I loved Marcus's pov at the end :

"He was a rich man. Not of coin, but of everything that mattered. Since he’d met Delilah, his heart had grown and then grown some more."

Historical Romance is not my preferred genre, but I have loved everything else I have read by Ms. Trentham and thought I would give A Sinful Surrender a try.
There was a nice blend of Regency mannerisms and a powerful mindset in the characters of Delilah and Marcus. Delilah might have been controlled by the stipulations and social regulations of the times, but she was still a powerful woman in her own right. Marcus was appreciative of the characteristics that set her apart from the other women of their time.
The mystery was intriguing and added much to the story and helped display the wit of Delilah.
I was given a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.

While this is technically book 4, in the timeline it runs along side book 1.
We have a murder mystery in this one.
Delilah is strong and brave. Marcus is sweet and protective.
Delilah just wants to hide and compose herself after hearing unkind things said about her, but instead she witnesses a murder. Marcus was just trying to find evidence to clear his fathers name, instead he finds Delilah over a dead body. Marcus saves her from being found and takes her to question her, and things take off from there.
I liked this one better on reread.

I wouldn’t say I’m typically drawn to historical romance, but the story Laura Trentham weaves through the books in this series is very enjoyable and pulls me in. Here Delilah finds herself in the middle of a mystery after being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The man she meets as a result changes the course of her life forever. A spunky heroine for the time, a mystery to unravel, and romance? A winning trifecta!
