Friendship and inner strength bind four women together. Whenever one struggles, the others are there to lift them up. They know they’ll come out of these trials stronger, better, and happier—and with lifelong friendships to treasure.
BESS
You have the power within you to overcome anything. In her heart, Bess knows this is true. But when her husband of over twenty years admits to an affair, she isn’t sure she can find her way back to breathing, much less thriving. But Bess does find the strength to kick Jon out, even when he falls to his knees and begs for another chance. He claims he is willing to do anything to make up for his past wrongs, to restore their marriage. But when Bess awakes from her shock a few weeks later, after the initial pain has begun to subside, she realizes the truth. She has the whole world before her—what does she want to do with it?
OLIVIA
Behind her beautiful face, Olivia is hiding a secret, one she has kept for her entire marriage. As she shows a smiling face to the world, her husband is carrying on with any woman he wants. He cares little about Olivia and she is too worn down to do anything but take the abuse. Until her secret comes out. It should be the worst day of Olivia’s life, when everyone can finally see the truth of her marriage, but she realizes that she’s finally free. So she takes her two adorable little girls and leaves, heading straight into the arms of the family who has always wanted her. Here she can remember the incredible woman she was at one time, the woman she misses dearly. In time, maybe she can become an even stronger version of that woman.
DEB
Deb doesn’t take crap from anyone. Especially not her husband. So when she finds out he has a mistress in another country, their marriage is DOA. The only downside is that Deb can only rage at her ex over the phone instead of in person. He deserves a dramatic burning-his-clothes-in-the-front-yard moment, but since he’s not around to watch, Deb doesn’t see the point. But she does see the point in getting into amazing shape, creating incredible art, and putting herself back on the market. Even if Rich can’t see Deb’s worth, she can.
GEN
Gen thought the worst of life’s trials were behind her. She’s accepted the fact that she will never conceive a child. She and her husband Levi have been through the fire and come out stronger than ever. But when an indiscretion from Levi’s past comes back to haunt them, can Gen move past the betrayal? Should she give up the man she thought was perfect for her? Or can she find the courage to love him through it all and allow him to learn and grow, to become the man she always knew he could be?

I have been reading and enjoying this author for awhile now. This book has a more mature voice than her others and definitely contains more serious and mature subject matter. This follows the lives of four women who are all struggling with infidelity in their marriages. This was hard for me for a couple reasons. First, I don't love so many main characters with separate storylines even when those storylines intersect. It makes it hard to connect emotionally and personally with anyone because the perspective keeps changing. I felt bad for all the characters because obviously infidelity is extremely difficult. Which leads me to my second problem. All four of these women are dealing with the same problem with slightly varying circumstances. It was hard to be swirling in that for the whole book. I'm not sure why the author chose to do that but it was hard to swallow. The theme seemed to be strong women and weak men. I know cheating is a real and prevalent problem. But not all men cheat. And women aren't the only ones who get cheated on. I realize that this is just the first book and hopefully things will get better for these characters. It was all just too much for me.
Women’s fiction. This story follows the lives of Bess, Deb, Olivia and Gen as their marriages fall apart in different ways. The pacing was slow and sometimes I had a hard time wanting to read it because it just felt like doom and gloom. Each woman’s marriage struggles or falls apart in differing degrees of infidelity. I wasn’t very happy with the ending. I hated Bess’s decision and thought it seemed a little out of character for her. But that’s just me. Olivia’s arc I enjoyed. Deb’s seemed a little far-fetched. Gen was my favorite character. I respected her the most with how she handled the ups and downs in her life. This is written well. I didn’t notice any typos or glaring grammatical errors, so my rating isn’t low for that reason. The slow pace made it hard to keep going and I didn’t like half of the characters as much as I wished I would have. It was a depressing book in many ways; hence, the lower rating.
DNF at 25%. I realized this is an ongoing saga of 9 books (and counting???) and I don't have that kind of energy or attention span. Not bad though, although the idea of 4 women going through the exact same conflict was a little weird. Plus I killed a fairy and found out a future love interest's name is Dax. That's my stepson's name and I am out. Will not read books featuring my step-dad's or step-son's name. (Probably not my bio-dad's name either, although the fact that I don't think of him by his first name might help, but I'm still glad his is old fashioned and doesn't show up much in raunchy books because I don't want to test that.)
I gave this book this review because with all the sadness in the major part of the story, it was hard for me to read. I have gone thru a divorce because of the "other woman" 33 years ago and this story brought back all those feelings that these women were going thru. HOWEVER, the last 1/4 of the book were overwhelmingly emotional & had me in tears of happiness! This is a book for the middle aged woman who has been thru life's ups & downs & come out on top fighting her emotions all the way.
The misspellings are minor irritants. (It's per se, not per say. It's wacky, not whacky. And twice, it's champing at the bit, not chomping.)
But the plot issues ruined it for me. The premise is that four women, all friends, have cheating husbands and have to make decisions about their lives going forward. A bit much to expect this would be happening to all of them, but okay. However, the author seems to treat all cheating as a unidimensional crime. If someone in the course of an argument pulled a gun and shot the other person, the victim would be just as dead as someone who was abducted, tortured, and slowly killed. But are those the same crime? Is a murder a murder regardless? I don't think so. So the serial cheater who publicly brags about his affairs and is controlling and critical of his long-suffering wife and the cheating pilot husband who moves his girlfriend in with him in another town are very different creatures than the husband who gets thrown out by his wife because she can't get pregnant and in despair when she won't let him come home and work through it, finally goes home one night with another woman he meets at a bar (arguably, that's not even cheating). And they are even different than the professor husband who has a one-time fling with an aide, confesses and is filled with remorse. I'm not saying a woman should put up with that, but it was not believable that the wife of that last one would refuse to even consider working things out. It just wasn't in keeping with her character or the presented tenor of their marriage. And I also wasn't buying the impossibly neat wrap up involving the dying one-time lover and the wife's instant total embrace of the child. Just too absurdly saintly. So, I don't feel inclined to check out other books by the author.
Final nitpicky note: Wife with infertility issues whose period is late starts throwing up daily and she and all her buddies think it's from "grief." Seriously, not a single one of her three friends who are mothers suggested she consider buying a pregnancy test?

A woman with a cheating husband? Ugh... This wasn't going to be fun.
Wait, there are two? I'm starting to have trouble keeping track of who's who.
Oops. Make that THREE cheating husbands. Damn, these friends are jinxed!
And just when I think it's ridiculous as can be, husband number four has also cheated --and been forgiven--in the past and now learns he's a baby daddy. I give up.
Add in an obvious budding romance in the making and a hinted-at pregnancy clearly adding to the hilarity, and it really can't get much more improbable. This is the bad daytime talk show of "romance" novels, if you're into horrific drama and women having to suck it up and just deal with shit because that's what we do.
A debut novel, one that was well written. Four women who have unexpected things happen to them, and learn that they are strong in their adversity. I look forward to reading more books by this author.
This book was depressing. 4 out of 4 husbands had sexual affairs. 3 out of 4 marriages ended in divorce! Say What?? The women were strong in the end, but it acts like one contemplating marriage should pass.

A rather depressing and uneventful story. 4 women (best friends) find out their respective husbands have cheated on them. Bess was a teacher when Deb, Olivia, and her sister Gen were seniors in high school 20 years ago. They all still live in the same little town on Whisling Island - off the Washington coast. The husbands all have very different careers and their marriages are seemingly fine. The Chapters in the story bounce back and forth between the four women and how they handle their husband's cheating and how they will handle the marriage and standing to support each other.
My personal thoughts: It wasn't anything new or different. Although they each were mad at their husbands, and each felt betrayed etc, in this story, none of the women really had any major hardships to deal with... they all had a place to go/live or they kicked the husband out of their house and he stayed out and they all had plenty of money in the meantime and the divorce settlements were not contested by either and of course, the ladies banded together to start a new business that of course, was wildly successful. It was almost like they didn't suffer any hardships at all they just got rid of the cheating husband - well, all but one did.
It seemed that when each woman revealed the cheating, the other three would give her support/advice etc, and the one with the problem never took any of the advice. They each wanted to do it their own way so I don't get why the author included the advice and support to each other when it was never used. It would have been better to focus on the strengths of each woman and how she used those strengths to move on in life. I also, personally took offense when the cheating was chalked up as a "mistake". Sorry, but anyone that cheats on the spouse, does it of his/her own free will and CHOICE. Cheating "by mistake" is not possible. Nor can it be an "accident". The person knows what he is doing and chooses to do it.
Sunset on Whisling Island is by Julia Clemens. This is the first book in the series of Whisling Island. Whistling Island is off the coast of Seattle, Washington. The characters involved are mainly those who live on the island fulltime. Many families have lived on the island for generations and know everyone on the island. Bess Wilding looked at her husband, Jon, as if she didn’t know him. This was the man she had loved for over fifteen years and with whom she had three children. She was speechless. Finally, she got her voice and told him she was going to be late and she would talk to him I the morning. On her way to a high school reunion, she texted him to be gone when she got home and that she would talk to the kids. Now, she just had to get through the evening with a smile on her face. After all, she was only one of two faculty members asked back for this class reunion. What would she do about Jon and his cheating on her? She was hurt but still loved him? At the reunion, Olivia found out Bart was leaving her and had continually had affairs while married to her. Then, best friend Deb found out her husband, Rich, was living with someone else in London and wanted a divorce. How will these three friends cope? How will their children cope?
A small island town and four couples are getting divorced? They are all close friends, close enough to be related, best friends, classmates, and such. The first one cheats with his academic aide and almost loses his professorship as well as his wife of 30 years. The next one has been cheating from the beginning and keeping mistresses while his wife kept a public image that hid the truth. At their high school reunion he goes public with it and destroys her position in town as well as her self-image. The third one is a pilot stationed half a world away from his wife who suddenly changes his banking password and has his nutritionist answering his phone at 10 o'clock at night. His wife speed dials her lawyer. The fourth and final one has already forgiven the mistake one drunken night and has put her marriage back together stronger than before. But now the "other woman" has terminal cancer and wants the husband to take care of their child when she dies. Will this one also lead to divorce?
Four women tearing apart their marriages and rebuilding themselves and their lives is a lot of drama, a lot of emotion. Ms. Clemens does an excellent job of covering the full range of tears, self-doubt, and anger. Recommended.
This chick lit novel follows four women who are all facing crumbling marriages. Two of these women are in their early fifties with grown children and husbands who have strayed. Bess's husband, a college professor, has had an affair with his research assistant. Deb's pilot husband and a stewardess have been are getting intimate from London to Dubai. Two others are in their thirties. Olivia is married to a manipulative and neglectful man who ignoreser and their young daughters. Gen faces an infertility crisis that has put a wedge between her and her devoted husband Levi. Each of these women deals with her marital woes in a different way. Bess is hurt and angry, but reluctant to end her marriage to Jon. Deb is angry and hostile and divorces Rich as fast as she can. Olivia's husband leaves her for his pregnant mistress and announces his desire for a divorce at their high school reunion, moritfying Olivia in her hometown. In a fit of despair, Gen throws Levi out of the house and, while drunk and depressed, he has a one night stand. I found myself empathizing with some of these women more than others, and rooting for at least a few of the men in their lives.
Bess is an older woman with grown children who discovers her husband has cheated on her. Because she is a traditional housewife with no current skills, she must figure out how to move on by herself. Since her special skill is cooking, the solution is to start a food truck business.
Her best friend, Deb, is on her own mostly because her pilot husband is gone all the time. Her two children are young adults, and she's an artist. When she realizes her husband is cheating on her, she divorces him without a second thought.
Olivia is a SAHM with two young kids, quite a Stepford Wife, doing everything to make her husband happy, but he is a serial cheater and she knows it. When he dumps her, she must move on, which is easy because there's a handsome man right there, ready to help her get over her grief.
Gen, Bess's much younger sister, forgave her husband for his infidelity years ago but now he's presented with a child he never knew he had, and the mother is dying, so he and Gen have a choice to make.
This is the first book in the Whisling Island series by Julia Clemens. This story follows the lives of four women, Bess, Olivia, Deb, and Gen who support each other while facing personal struggles, heartbreak, and self-discovery living in the town of Whisling Island, Washington. Each woman is at a crossroads in the life facing betrayal and secrets to rebuild their lives and finding inner strength. Bess finds out her husband is having an affair and decides to leave him. Olivia finally leaves her husband after years of abuse and takes her two children with her. Deb has a long-distance marriage and finds out he is having an affair and decides to get into shape and leave him. Gen cannot have children with her husband Levi and finds out he cheated on her. This story blends themes of friendship, resilience and personal growth and new beginnings. I really enjoyed this fantastic contemporary romance novel.
This was almost too much for me. Every husband cheats is the theme and the long suffering wife adapts, adjusts and evolves. Some of the angst of the betrayed wife felt very real indeed, some other situations just felt like lukewarm water. I get that the chick literature showing the amazing friendship between the women was demonstrative and intense but the demonization of all of the men was a downer and detracted from the story. Bess especially seemed torn and uindecided and just seemed to lean towards divorce because her friends had leaned the same way.
I don't particularly recommend this is you are looking for an uplifting story of female strength and friendship. It was just....too much.
It is a lot deeper and unfeigned then the books I tend to read right now, but I enjoyed it.
It is a clean domestic fiction book that follows a couple of middle-aged women through hard trials and having to readjust to new changes in their lives.
Although I’m younger then these characters and can’t relate personally to what they are dealing with, I find this book actually refreshingly different from the hallmark picture perfect love stories that I usually am drawn to.
It’s a good reminder that women are powerful and capable of doing hard seeming impossible things.
“She was beginning to feel a little bit more alive every day and could finally imagine a day when the hurt in her heart for what she had lost would be replaced with the hope of something better.”
This book reminded me of women's fiction from Robyn Carr and Debbie Macomber. Four women from an island community find themselves in situations none of them had anticipated or wanted. Each deals with their life setbacks in a different way, but they're all there to support each other in the end. Each story is well told, each character is drawn in a way that we feel we known them, and each conflict is dealt with - enough to know that the characters will be okay for now, but with enough questions to make the reader want to read on. Looking forward to Book 2!
This book just about broke my heart. What’s in the water on this island. ALL of the men clearly drank something that made them lose what little sense they were brown with. I will never understand people who throw away a life without blinking. However the strength of these women was inspiring. I am invested in the second phase of their lives so I will be reading the next book immediately. Even though my heart still hurts quite a bit I just have to know they are all alright.
I'm always on the hunt for women's fiction/romance novels that feature middle aged characters. Bess and Deb from this story fit the bill. Only, this book is very sad and dreary most of the time. I liked the strong friendships, and the close sister friendship in the story. I liked the small town feel in a different location than usual for these kinds of stories. I know there are more books to come in this series, but it did feel like it stopped in the middle of the story without a satisfying conclusion.
Sunset on Whistling Island is an interesting novel which deals with four women and their marital problems. I would have liked to have had more character development which would be difficult with four marital relationships to handle. Each woman had a problem dealing with a husband who had been unfaithful, but each was able to handle her problem in a way that was true to her own character. I'm anxious to read the second book in the series to see how their lives continue.
After reading this book one truly feels that sunset actually means another sunrise is on its way. There is much sadness and heartbreak in this book, but also much happiness and joy. Good friends years ago become good friends again. Good cooking, good food and friendships that last a lifetime. The book ends with a promise of better tomorrows.
This story is well-written, has well-developed characters, and does hold your interest. The only real problem that I had with this book was the timing. Four women whom all had cheating husbands, found out at the same time and three of the four marriages ended in divorce. It was just too coincidental, too convenient.
So, if the timing is not a problem for you or even if it is, you will undoubtedly enjoy this one.
Thought this was a new author for me and then found it was some one I have already read and enjoyed before just with a different name and a different take on the story. Four women and their stories of how they dealt with cheating husbands. Really looking forward to what happens next for each of these women.
This was a bit of a departure from what I normally read, but was well worth it. This was an emotional read that dealt with a variety of issues including infidelity, divorce, and infertility, in a really strong way. I would rate this as clean fiction, PG-13 for the issues discussed.
4 women from different walks of life, yet all have the same heart break in common. How each one deal with this is the heart of the book. There is nothing I would change about this book. All of the characters are well drawn and the setting is incredible. I can’t wait for the next one in the series.
I love the beach and ocean, I'm usually a suspense and mystery reader. Seen this title and decided to try something different and it was fantastic. All the women going thru awful times in their life but supporting the others. Well written, I have already pre-ordered the next one.
I really liked this story. It involves four women and the trials in their lives. Unfaithful husbands and the drama and heart ache this causes. But these ladies found their way to move on. Now for the rest of the story. You will enjoy this first story of Whistling Island, can’t wait to start New Beginnings.
Four women with broken hearts and how they worried through the challenges that were faced by each one. They were heartbroken by different circumstances. So their needs were all different and they could be encouraged by each other. A nice story about grieving with friends.
Well all the ladies were incredible individuals who have to cope with one common issue that of infidelity. I guess my reaction to this book and its plot with all the women and their husbands is that are there any men out there who are faithful? This does not take away how awesome the women are and how they cope with it but it is rather depressing that all the men did the same thing.
