Love Riot: A Teenage Call to Live with Relentless Abandon for Christ

Rate this book
Young people are walking away from the church and those still in the church often struggle with indifference about their faith. But it doesn't have to be this way. It's time for a revolution, a holy uprising. A riot. With passion and authenticity, teen author Sara Barratt calls on her generation to reject apathy and embrace a daring, costly faith. Not content with safe religion that demands nothing of us, Sara shows teens how they can stop giving in to the status quo and devote themselves fully to Christ, following him no matter what their friends do or the culture around them does. She challenges them to give everything over--their comfort zones, their time, their loyalties, their pride--and discover that in losing control they are gaining the life that was meant for them all along. Love Riot is a battle cry from one teen to another to embrace a life of wholehearted commitment and relentless abandon for Christ . . . no matter the cost.

I finished this in the middle of the night last night, and sat there holding it and smiling. This was SUCH a breath of fresh air, reigniting this tired soul with excitement to serve God. To LOVE Him and to use my time well. Sara shared basic truths in a whole new light, and her heart for her generation - for me as a reader - was so clearly obvious. She writes with incredible humility, wisdom, and confidence. Most of all, she reminds us WHY. And Who.

There are so many quotes I wish I could share, I underlined and circled and wrote notes in the margins on almost every page. But you'll just have to read it yourself.

This book was so timely for me.

Note: I received an arc of Love Riot for promotional purposes. A positive review was not required, all thoughts are my own.

"Love Riot" is a book that will not leave you unaffected. Barratt has researched and put together a book for teens that will keep their attention, involve them in change and encourage them to share the gospel message.

The book is separated into 5 parts, each with a different focus. Every chapter has a theme that ties in to the heading of that particular portion. At the conclusion of each chapter there are also questions that can be answered for further reflection and study.

"Love Riot" is one of those books that I wish I already had in my arsenal as a youth pastor, but I am thankful to have it now! I think it will be helpful to teens of all ages. The challenge to live our lives for Christ calls us to take action! There are well thought out illustrations throughout, and Barratt doesn't ask her readers to do more than she's willing to do herself. She offers a leader's heart, willing to walk the same path and encourage along the way.

The chapters are short enough to read as a devotional or for use as a small group focused reading. I feel this book would be a great gift for any young person in your life. The book is perfect for the times we are currently experiencing--our youth need to hear the call to stand up and stand out from the crowd, living to make a difference for Christ.

I was an early reader, thanks to the author and Baker Books Publishing. All opinions are my own.

This is one of those books that comes along that is clearly written for ‘today’, for today’s teens. Sara conveys truth and asks the ‘hard’ questions that reveal the need to stop giving excuses for the (your) status quo. Sarah has decided to go all out for Jesus and extends the invitation to join her.... and Jesus. Love Riot was easy to read and reminded me why living for Christ is the only way to live.

I know I've reviewed this book before? Weird...

Anyway, all that to say no matter your age Love Riot is a book that will challenge you in all the best ways and I think everyone should give it a read. It's a book that pushes you to think beyond your comfort zones and encourages you to live all out for Christ!

I loved my first time reading it, and my second was maybe more enlightening...fantastic read that I highly recommend!

This book wasn't specifically geared toward me, I feel, because I'm not your typical "grew up in the church" Christian.

I mean, my parents tried, but the options are narrow here, I never had much interest, and honestly, for years, I didn't even want to be associated with Christians because ... many reasons. Reasons discussed in this book, in fact!

I was glad to read it, though, because I'm glad someone else sees the issues in the church! And the fact that it's someone who actually enjoys church (I never have) is also intriguing to me.

Because I still feel that the modern church (which, despite the frail efforts of a few actual Christians, is nothing but a building these days inhabited by thousands of random people and a scattering of real members of the Church) has little to offer me, if anything, and specifically the churches in our area have nothing to offer me, I didn't glean all that much from this book. However, I think it's a book a lot of Christian teens should read!

I would like to see teens rise up. We are a selfish generation, an iGeneration, and there is a great need for revival, for a lack of self, for actual understanding and intelligence ... and if that revival comes from anywhere, it must be from Christ.

So yes, I think this is a book most Christian teens should read! I'm glad I read it because it gives me a little hope - and seeing others read it gives me a little hope, too!

Just... Wow. Such a convicting and inspiring message. I wish I had been able to read this years ago when first struggling with my faith. Sara doesn't just speak about why Christian teens should come back to the church. She goes in depth about our need to love Christ and to show Christ's love to the world around us. This is one of the few books I've read that I wish I could give it more than just five stars. I recommend this to anyone, not just teens. But I will give a warning. If you intend to give this a casual read, you won't be successful. If you read this book, prepare to be convicted and encouraged to fully and completely fall in love with Jesus Christ and to be burdened to share His love with the world. As missionary Eric Liddell once said, "Christ for the world, for the world needs Christ!" As Christian teens, we need to have our sleeping faith awakened. We might be the only gospel people will ever read. As Christians, we need to love Christ and to show His love to the world. Excellent work, Sara! I hope this benefits as many readers as it did me!

Where do I begin? I cannot say enough good things about this book. In a world where apathetic and complacent Christianity has become the "norm," Sara, just a teenager herself, challenges us to start a rebellion: a rebellion against apathy and complacency. While the book is addressed to teenagers, I would argue that adults may need the book just as much, if not more, than young people. Christians of all ages today are settling. They are settling for being a basic Christian, not stepping out of their comfort zones, not giving to God what they just want to cling to. They're doing what they can to get by and still be considered a Christian instead of giving all for the cause of Christ. We are apathetic. We need to stand up, lay everything aside for the cause of Christ, and start this rebellion. Apathetic ought never to describe a Christian. We ought always to be recognized by our unwavering dedication to Jesus and the gospel. Sara helps us see the problems both teenage and adult Christians are facing and lovingly shares conviction and advice to help us walk in the right direction toward overcoming those problems. She urges us to boldly start this rebellion. I want in. I hope you do too. I promise you won't regret reading this book. I needed it. You need it. We all need it. Pick up this book and get ready to be bombarded with simple, yet profound and entirely needed, Biblical truth.

WOW, WOW, WOW!

This book is tremendously timely for this generation and I cannot say just how much I enjoyed reading it.

As I read this book, I could not help but see that the author has a passion not only for the Savior, but to see her peers live out their Christian walk to the fullest as well and as a woman in my 30's and in ministry with my husband - that is so refreshing and encouraging. To see one so young on-fire and not scared to share it, is fantastic!

She is not afraid to tackle the hard parts of Christianity head on and she leaves you with the want to reevaluate your relationship with the Lord, she challenges you to go deeper than you have ever been before and it's beautiful!

Those in ministry - I encourage you to tell your youth groups about this book and to read it yourself!

The chapters are to the point and not overly long, so it would make a great book to read through as a Bible Study group.

I was an early reader thanks to the author and Baker Books Publishing.

At first glance, I thought, “Wow. Another Christian book for teens… ” Then I actually read Love Riot. It convicted, encouraged, and motivated me to pursue Christ with reckless abandon. This book is rooted in Biblical truth and rich in practical applications.

One of the things I love about this book is that it doesn’t talk down to you. Instead, it talks with you. Sara Barratt writes as a friend. She doesn’t make it seem like she has it all together. She passionately shares her struggles, hopes, and dreams for the future. You’ll never feel like you’re at a lecture, but rather at a Sunday afternoon coffee chat with a good friend.

I highly recommend this to the teen or even adult struggling with their faith. You won’t regret reading it!

I loved reading Love Riot! As a teacher of teenagers in a Christian school and a student ministry leader, the message of this book is much needed for today’s teenagers learning to follow Christ.

Barratt challenges apathetic Christianity and calls teenagers to live passionate faith in Jesus starting now. She covers every topic needed for teenagers to understand how the Gospel impacts every part of their lives. She breaks every chapter down into parts that inspire you to action.

It was so fun and easy to read but also so challenging and one that left you thinking. I loved the questions at the end of the chapters. This would be perfect to be able to discuss with others as you read together.

This book reminds me of Crazy Love by Francis Chan. I read that in high school, but struggled to connect with it as a teenager. I’m so thankful I can now give my students a book that is so clearly written for them.

I highly recommend this for any teenager or young adult! You will walk away changed.

The author wants her generation for fall deeply and passionately in love with Jesus, and this book provides practical action steps for doing that. Barratt shares her story, as well as the stories of others, to show how life would be different without Jesus. Following Jesus is a daily choice which requires passion and commitment.

While geared toward teens, this is a wonderful, inspiring book to help the reader go deeper in their relationship with Jesus.

The book is divided into five sections:
1. The Call
2. The Change
3. The Challenge
4. The Crux
5. The Commission

I enjoyed the "Going Deeper" questions at the end of each chapter.

Favorite quotes include:

- "Following Christ is a pattern that always comes back to, and is paved with, love."

- "The gospel is worth the cost of our discomfort."

- "We're not guaranteed tomorrow. All we have is today."

Love Riot defines some problems we struggle with as the world tries to encroach on our relationship to God. Then Sara Barratt outlines how to change that relationship and challenges us to grow in our relationship with Jesus. She helps us see God’s love for us as individuals and shows how that will motivate us to love others well, speak out and live in radical conviction. I like how this book is written with teenagers in mind, and yet challenges everyone to draw closer to God. This book has a great mix of personal testimony, scripture and explanations, plus inspiring stories of people sharing Jesus and making a difference.

I've been lucky enough to get a sneak peek at this book, and I cannot recommend it enough. The book focuses on how passionless the church has become, and the end of each chapter has a section of "Digging Deeper" questions to really make you think about what you've just read in relation to your own life. Whether you're 15 or 50, this book will impact you and change your life, just as it is affecting mine, even after I finished it.

This book is amazing! It addresses so many problems teenagers have but don’t understand; and better yet it gives teenagers solutions to those problems. Reading this book is really an eye opening experience and I can’t wait to share it with others in person. It does a great job at explaining the separation teenagers feel from Christ and I can’t wait to finish reading it.

If I were to summarize what my spiritual life has been like during this season, distracted and fragmented are two words that come to mind. At the end of a school year as a teacher, as a freelancer, and in getting ready for a significant move, this life season has had its challenges in focussing on Christ in the middle of everything there is to focus on. Sara's book offered heartfelt encouragement, direct, insightful questions to recalibrate my heart, and a call to teens everywhere to refocus on pursuing Jesus with all of their heart, mind, and soul. I really appreciated it.

One of my favorite quotes was this: "We think we're seeking hard and coming up empty, but in reality, we're hardly seeking." In seasons of spiritual dryness, am I really putting effort into this relationship? Another one I loved: "We can't fall back on God's Word only when we need it or we'll be clumsy and unfamiliar with our spiritual sword."

I would definitely recommend this book to young people I know and love in my teen discipleship group, acquaintances in my BSF circles, or a sweet-hearted friend who wants to pursue Christ but still feels the pull of the culture. It's also a great book to use for mentoring--reading the chapters and getting together to discuss the Going Deeper questions at the end. I can't wait to see its impact, and it's well worth adding to your 2020 TBR.

From chapter 1, this book is engaging. It grabs your attention and speaks the message which is on so many teenager's hearts, lucking under the surface.

This is a book which I WISH I had as a teenager, something which reflected some of my frustrations with complacency, but also went a step more than that—it offers thoughts on what we need to DO about it starting from step 1: our own hearts. Through a base rooted in scripture, Love Riot offers practical thoughts on everything from Bible study to good use of time to social media, but emphasizes that it's NOT about a to-do list... it's about having an overflowing, radical love.

Now, as a young adult, I help out with youth ministry at my church and I can see how this message is incredibly useful to today's teens. It's not that people don't change—it's that God doesn't change, and this message of loving him first is timeless.

Amazing!

This book is not just for teens it’s for all of us. As a youth leader I was beyond excited to read this book. After reading Love Riot I felt this was so amazing that I ended up ordering 22 copies.

Love Riot is a battle cry against low expectations and how to live a life sold out for Christ. The Author Sara Barratt shares her concern for the apathetic faith that is so prevalent today. We all know the staggering numbers of youth that walk away from the church never to return and it’s heartbreaking. This book challenges us to live lives of radical devotion to God. I was filled with encouragement, inspiration and hope for the future of the church.

My favorite quote from Love Riot

“I have a vision for my generation. I can see us rising up to be the most devoted, most committed, most passionate generation of Jesus followers the world has ever seen. Beneath the surface lies a dormant passion for God. We just need to wake it up.” -Sara Barratt

This is a new book that calls young people to greater commitment to the Lord. It’s pretty basic, but that can be a great thing for a teen who needs to hear Truth from another young person. I liked the quotes and stories of Christians Sara shares. I especially love the title. 😃
I’m going to pass it on to my sister to read before snatching it back for another read. 😇😉

I became interested in this book for teens after reading an article by the author. I didn’t expect too much from a nineteen year old author. Love Riot, however, far exceeded my expectations. It can be a book for any age. Practical and encouraging.

One thought kept reoccurring as I read this book: the author is so young! In fact, at a mere 19 years of age; she's realizing things that many people far beyond that age haven't discovered.
In this stunning debut book, Barratt challenges young people to stand against peer pressure, forsake trappings of society and commit their lives and hearts totally to Jesus Christ.
She opens by stating that young people need to experience a genuine relationship with the Lord. Her moment of realization that her faith was superficial arrived during a gimmicky youth event. Each attendee had been given an amount of money and were allowed to spend it at the local mall. The 'gimmick' was well intentioned, surely attracted a large number of attendees but she found herself feeling guilty about it. She longed for more. More of a sincere, close relationship with Christ.
I eagerly soaked in each chapter of this book and several left me searching inward. The author wisely chose to speak with several other young people who had various issues: a life that was devoted to Christ but spiraling out of control; a person seemingly filled with faith but inwardly struggling and seeking and so many others. Sara included her personal faith journey as well in candid, raw terms.
This book should be part of every youth group curriculum and be read by parents and grandparents. Teens and preteens are encountering issues that are foreign to the majority of us. In an easy to read and non-judgemental manner, Sara Barratt speaks on their behalf.
She is the lead editor for the website TheRebelution.com and it's easy to see why this book is so very important and needed, especially now.

Love Riot is a fantastic book that will both inspire and convict. It’s a book our generation definitely needs.

Sara dispels the idea that Christianity should be easy or convenient--and rightly points us back to what Jesus says: following Him isn’t comfortable, but it’s worth it. She cuts away the distractions to bring us back to the core message of the gospel that teenagers, and really all of us, need to hear. Church isn’t about youth group games. It’s not about flashy entertainment or inspirational messages. It’s not about making yourself look good. It’s not a box on a checklist. It’s about Jesus--something we forget shockingly often.

One of the great strengths of Sara’s writing is its relatability. As teenagers, we often feel like we’re not expected to be seriously committed. The book shows teenagers that we don’t have to, and shouldn’t, wait to go all in. We can do it right now--even if the world can’t understand. “Some people might say we’re wasting our youth--and our lives--by not conforming to cultural norms. But if culture says that living all-out for Jesus is wasting my life, then I can think of no higher calling than to “waste my life” for the cause of Christ.”

I liked the stories sprinkled throughout the book, both of teenagers living out their faith and of extraordinary people throughout history. Sara does a great job of making these relevant and showing us what a life pursuing Jesus looks like.

All in all, it was a great read that constantly made me think. I hope more teenagers read this book and consider their own priorities.

Elisabeth Elliot once wrote, "The fact that I am a woman does not make me a different kind of Christian, but the fact that I am a Christian makes me a different kind of woman."
I think the same truth can be applied in this way: The fact that you are a teenager does not make you a different kind of Christian, but the fact that you are a Christian, makes you a different kind of teenager.

It is especially easy for teenagers raised in a Christian home to grow apathetic about their faith. We get stuck in our habits. We go through the motions. Whatever happened to a fire for Christ so bright and passionate that people couldn't help but notice it's glow?

There comes a point in every teenager's life where we must decide whether to coast on our parent's faith and eventually burn out, or take up our cross and follow Jesus.

Sara's passion and love for Jesus practically glows in every page of her book. I walked away from each chapter eager to dig deeper into God's Word, inspired to quit giving "lip service" to my faith and start living it instead, hungry to grow closer and closer to Jesus. Love Riot reminded me that the gospel isn't just words on a page or knowing John 3:16 by heart. It is something living, alive, and absolutely incredible.

Yet despite the incredible joy and passion that jumps off the pages, Love Riot is no comfortable read. Following Christ means sacrificing, giving of ourselves, living counterculturally... have you counted the costs?

Are you ready for a Love Riot?

This is an amazing and powerful message, and more teens need to hear it!

As a teen myself, I loved reading Love Riot. Its chapters are concise and to the point, and illustrated with many powerful, real-life examples. The author’s voice is not preachy, but instead is truly passionate about Jesus. Prepare to be inspired to live with reckless love for God.

The only possibly negative thing I would mention is that I expected this book to be more focused on the theme of love from its title than it turned out to be. But I was not disappointed by the content I found instead. The author stresses that a radical love for God changes every part of our lives (much like This Changes Everything by Jaquelle Crowe) and from that point, she covers everything from Bible memorization to the church to evangelism.

It might sound crazy, but it is actually really refreshing to read so many parts of the Christian life summarized into one book. It definitely helped me to get a thorough look at myself and where I need to work on my faith. Though the book did not focus on the “Love” in “Love Riot” as much as I expected it to, it definitely fulfilled its subtitle: “A Teenage Call to Live with Relentless Abandon for Christ.”

I highly recommend this book to any fellow teens who want to live with relentless abandon for Christ.

Yes, yes, YES! Finally, someone in my generation is standing up and saying, “I'm not going to bend to all the spiritual shallowness, apathy, and complacency in the American church. Come join me.” That has been so refreshing in reading this book. Sara Barratt is a rare gem in our generation. And she has written a book that is truly for such a time as this.

Even though last year I committed to pursuing Christ more intentionally, Sara has really convicted and challenged me to keep going deeper in my walk with the Lord.

Due to chronic health issues, I haven't finished the book yet (I’m reading it before its release because I received an advance reader copy from the publisher). But what I've read thus far has been so excellent that I highly recommend Love Riot without any doubts. Although the message is tailored for teens, I think it's still perfect for 20-somethings (like myself) and even for older people because the core message is what every generation needs.

On a final note, my ruthless inner editor has been virtually silent on this book—a rarity indeed for me! Sara’s writing is stellar and has a pleasing rhythm. It’s easy to read, yet sparks a lot of deep thought and soul-searching.

Love Riot was an absolute joy to read and so convicting and encouraging.

Sara's call for young people to live radically devoted to Jesus addresses the heart as well as the every day habits that cultivate a passionate love for Christ.

From the applicable tips she shares on resisting our comfort zones, intentionally prioritizing time in the Word, handling technology and social media in a godly way, cultivating healthy relationships, etc., to the moving stories she tells of Christians—young and old, from the past and present—who took risks to share the Gospel, I finished this book feeling equipped, inspired, and challenged.

I love how Love Riot book is filled with Scripture references and questions for each chapter to take the content to a personal level. It's clear her heart is sold-out for the Lord, and that pours into the pages. She speaks from personal experiences, both good and bad, in such a way it’s almost like having an honest, in-depth conversation, writer-to-reader.

This book is gold. I tore it apart with notes and pen marks, laughed out loud at her light humor, cried from conviction and inspiration, and can’t stop thinking about it. I'm so excited to see how God uses it. Please read!!!

Love Riot has so much truth to share with teens. Written by a teen for other fellow teenagers, this book pleads with young people to live passionately for Christ with no regrets.

Some of my favorite chapters were the ones near the middle...where Sara gives tips on prayer, being in the Word, and how to witness with a loving heart. A couple sections I thought were especially helpful were the sections on how not resting can actually be a waste of time (chapter 10) and how while social justice is rooted in the gospel, it shouldn't replace the gospel (chapter 13). I also appreciated the section on the church, what it is, and also what it's not.

This is a book that could be read by both guys and girls. The truth in it is for all teens (and adults) who are seeking a deeper walk with Christ. Sara invites the reader on a journey of sacrifice and passion, a journey rooted in Christ.  She is passing along the gospel that has captivated her heart, calling the current generation to "No reserves, no retreats, no regrets!"

Love Riot has been inspiring, empowering and challenging to read. The passionate call to pursue the Lord with all of your heart, the life changing stories and personal humility Sara Barratt shared from drives me to keep humbly approaching the Lord for His glory, for the good of others around me and for my own walk with Him. One of many great truths in her book is "As we focus on Christ, we're taking hold of the weapons He has provided. Praise is one of the most beautiful ways to fix our eyes on God, and it's also one of the most powerful weapons against Satan!" She takes an honest journey through the call to follow Jesus, our battles with self and the challenges we all face that can hinder our full abundant experience of life with Jesus Christ. Thank you Sara!

With riveting stories and relevant illustrations, Sara Barratt has written Love Riot with teens at the forefront, but there was something for this 40-something Mama of teens to learn. I was reminded of some things I’ve learned along the way as well as convicted by her passion and forthright manner. There are questions at the end of each chapter which are perfect for journaling and self-reflection, but would also work in a small group discussion setting! Well written and a book for anyone who wants to be reminded of what our priorities should be. I heartily recommend Sara Barratt’s Love Riot and will be giving copies to my teens! 4 1/2 stars!

Sara Barrat has lit a torch to set on fire the hearts and minds of those who want to move from apathy and complacency in their Christian walk to one of passion and commitment. The book is geared towards youth (teenagers) however, it is a sobering call for well seasoned believers in Christ to evaluate their love of the Father and be unafraid to speak the gospel or share their faith. I am very impressed at this young lady’s explanation and testimony of how God is moving through her and hope that this book will do the same for others.
