After reading English at 3 Universities and graduating from none of them, I set off travelling around the world with my wife, Ann, finally settling in South Africa, where we still live. After Ann dropped a rather large speaker on my head I came up with the idea for a detective series. DS Jason Smith was born. Smith, the first in the series was finished a few months later. 3 years and 8 DS Smith books later, Joffe Books wondered if I would be interested in working with them. As a self-published author, I agreed. However, we decided on a new series - the DC Harriet Taylor Cornwall series. The Beekeeper hit the shelves and hit the number one spot in Australia. The second in the series, The Perfect Murder did just as well. The third in the series, The Backpacker I have self-published and is now available.

Detective Jason Smith is not a huge team player ... he's a great cop and he clears all his cases. But he is uncontrollable at times and has anger issues. He has his own way of doing things .. with or without his supervisor's permission.

Jason is perplexed when a man is shot and killed in a park in broad daylight. So why are there no witnesses? And then another body shows up ...also killed with a gun ... and no witnesses.

It doesn't stop there. More bodies are found .... all shot and killed with one bullet. What connects all these victims?

While dealing with trying to catch a serial killer, he's also dealing with a new supervisor .. the nephew of the Chief. He is fighting to get his wife and daughter back after a bad decision on his part. And now he's suffering from debilitating migraines.

This is another well written addition to a terrific series. Although this is the 12th book, it is easily read as a stand alone. However, I recommend starting at the very beginning. Smith and his team are great characters and I've enjoyed seeing how they grow into their roles. I like the mix of his personal life with his professional side. The plot is well crafted and the ending is unpredictable.

Many thanks to the author / Books n All Book Promotions for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

I couldn't wait to read Deadeye which is book 12, and the latest, in the DS Jason Smith series. This author had my full attention yet again as Deadeye is another winner!

Jason Smith is out walking his dogs, Fred and Theakston, in his local Hove park. What could possibly go wrong?!

A shot rings out and screams are heard so Smith goes to see where the noise has come from and to find out what has happened.
A man has been shot in the forehead...
A case is opened and Smith and his team set out to investigate who the man is and who and why would someone want to shoot him?
Forensics find a match against the cartridge that was used in the shooting and shockingly it is from a gun which is commonly used by highly trained marksmen; notably the army.
Unfortunately, further shootings take place and with the extra help from a ballistics expert, it's a race against time for Smith and team to find the killer/s before even more innocent people are killed.

Most scenes are set in York but a few I found particularly interesting because they're set a few years previously in Afghanistan. I was thinking what these soldiers had to do with the murders that were taking place and trying to work out which, or even, if, one of them were responsible for the shootings, and why?
Whoever the perpetrator/s were, were very highly trained.
I was engrossed and on edge the whole way through reading this, I always feel excited with this authors books as you just never know what is going to happen next; they have so much thrill factor!

I really like Smith and each of his team, we have a new DI too, who I took to straight away. The characters are so believable, I feel as if I know them all and it was so good to catch up with them again.
Smith's personal life, well, I wish he'd get his act together...

As is usual from this hugely talented author, the storyline is brilliant and the plotting is well structured, with twists aplenty and another terrific and unexpected ending! It was very enjoyable, plus I got what I wished for! 😉

I highly recommend.
Thank you

BOOK 12 IN THE JASON SMITH SERIES D.S Jason Smith is back once again and has a lot going on in his private life. Walking his dogs in Hove Park York when over by the lake screams are heard, the park is busy, a lot of people about, going straight over a man has been shot through the middle of his forehead its the size of a two pound coin lying on his back. Smith tries to get everyone away that isn't easy with two dogs and he calls in for help. Bridge and Yang Chu arrive with Webber the head of forensics. It doesn't matter where he goes he seems to stumble across a incidence of some kind, his day off is cancelled. The body is formally named as Charles Lincoln and he was shot by a L96 sniper an army gun. This book tells us the story too and frow in southern Afghanistan a few years previously, so what are the links? There's so much happening throughout this book it has a little bit of humour added and a few ups and downs for Smith, but this is what the author delivers. The deadeye with a sniper means business and has to be stopped , and I so enjoyed every single page. Well done again for an excellent read, these characters are starting to feel like friends to me, amazing, I loved reading them all and want more.

I confess war related stories don't usually appeal to me, but this one is different. Its more to do with the knock on effect of the rivalry between soldiers when they return home to York from Afghanistan.

An ordinary sunny Friday afternoon at a crowded park in York and the first murder takes place. Charles Lincoln is shot by means of a specialist sniper rifle L96, same as the type used in conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan. Three further murders, two of which are women, then ensue by means of the same weapon.

Written with intelligence and drama I did not predict the perpetrator nor the hard hitting twist at the end.

The Smith/Whitton private life saga continues throughout the story. Superintendent Smythe's nephew, DI Oliver Smythe joins the police team.

A stand alone story - one that everyone should read and enjoy. You won't be disappointed!

I have been a fan of Stewart's work for a while now. He has written quite a few books now. I have read and reviewed a lot of his books but I still haven't managed to catch up with all of his work just yet. Although I have loved everything that he has written, I must admit that I do have something of a soft spot for Detective Sergeant Jason Smith for reasons which I will explain in a bit. 'Deadeye' is the latest book in the DS Jason Smith series and it's another corker. I thoroughly enjoyed reading 'Deadeye' but more about that in a bit.
What can I say about Detective Sergeant Jason Smith? Well apart from the fact that I have a soft spot for him and I have claimed him as a relative- well the name Smith does crop up in my family tree so in theory that makes us cousins right? Anyway enough of my delusions so back to our hero I do go. Smith is actually Australian but he has strong ties with the York area, as his beloved Grandmother lived there. Smith was sent to live with his Grandmother after his sister died in an accident in Australia. I get the impression that Smith's parents blamed him. Smith's Grandmother was definitely an important part of Smith's life and he was devastated when she died. Smith has remained in the York area since her death. Smith had been settled in his life as he had a wife and daughter although following Smith's indiscretion in a previous book, his wife moved out and took his daughter with her. Since then Smith has been beating himself up over what happened and he is determined to get them home where they belong. Smith is certainly a determined detective although he occasionally bends the rules. Smith just seems to be a trouble magnet and despite everything that Stewart puts him through (the meanie), Smith stands up, dusts himself off and carries on. However, the cases as described in 'Deadeye' test him as he has never been tested before. Will Smith (my hero and cousin) solve the case, save the day and succeed in bringing his family back home? Well for the answers to those questions and so much more you are just going to have to read the book for yourselves to find out as I am not going to tell you.
Oh my goodness gracious me, 'Deadeye' was another unputdownable, page turner of a book from Stewart. I was hooked on this book from the moment I read the synopsis, let alone from reading the story itself. To say that this book was addictive seems to be a massive understatement. I had to read the book in one long reading binge because I simply couldn't bear to put the book to one side for any length of time. The book wasn't exactly glued to my hands but it might as well have been because it travelled everywhere with me. I couldn't bear to miss a single second of the story and besides which I needed to know whether or not Smith (my hero) made it to the end of the book in one piece.
'Deadeye' is superbly written but then I find that to be true of all of Stewart's books. He manages to grab your attention from the synopsis and he draws you into the story. Once he has your attention then he will not let you have it back until the moment you finish the last word on the last page. 'Deadeye' was one of those books that gripped me throughout and had me on the edge of my seat throughout, which got a bit uncomfortable at times.
In short, I thoroughly enjoyed reading 'Deadeye' even if Smith was put through the wringer again. 'Deadeye' has left me wanting, no make that needing more books in the Detective Sergeant Smith series. Knowing Stewart as I do, I am sure that I won't have too long to wait. I wholeheartedly recommend this book, this series and all of Stewart's books to other readers. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.

This is book number twelve in the very popular series featuring DS Jason Smith, an Australian who now works in York alongside a great established team of detectives. Smith is minding his own business and giving some much needed exercise to the dogs (Theakston the Lazy Bull Terrier and Fred the Ugly Pug), something he has rather neglected since his wife DC Erica Whitton moved out to her parents taking 4 year old Laura with her, as a gunshot rings out across the crowded park. A man is felled, a woman screams and Smith finds himself again at the scene of a murder. It is a very cold and calculated killing yet there appears to be no motive for shooting the man, and more worryingly, no witnesses to the crime. Smith is temporarily in charge of the investigation until their new DI joins them. And horror of horror, the new DI Smyth is only the nephew of their complete buffoon of a Superintendent Smyth. No one is looking forward to him joining the existing and very capable team which also includes DC Yang Chu and DS Bridge. They have barely had time to get their heads around the first shooting when reports come in of another. And this one would have taken even more skill to pull off than the first. They quickly realise that this is no ordinary killer and are able to focus their sights on a limited number of highly skilled suspects. Revenge may be sweet for this murderer but are things really as obvious as they seem? Smith for one believes there is no such thing as coincidence but can he convince everyone else in time when all he has to go on is his famous gut feeling? Once again it's a completely engrossing read from start to finish as Smith puts his life on the line to keep the city of York safe. The characters are so familiar now that they're more like family and as a reader you really care what happens to them. The high level of research that goes into these stories is abundantly clear, both in the area of ballistics and also the medical issue for Smith which I can say from experience was spot on. It's yet another hit for Stewart Giles as this fabulous series just gets better and better. Long may it continue and I, for one, am already eagerly awaiting the next story! 5*

So this is the 12th in the DS Jason Smith series, while it probably can be read as a standalone, I would suggest to read at least the previous book Demons as a small part of the storyline carries over.

Deadeye is a fast paced read, with a bit of dark humour and a heart in your mouth ending.

Smith and his team are faced with one of their deadliest killers yet, a snipper apparently picking off members of the public at random.

I have to be honest I was furious with Smith in the last book but thankfully he seems to have wised up a bit in this one and getting his life back on track. To add to his woes he had to deal with a new DI, Smith always seems to butt heads with authority figures at the best of times and it was fun to see him deal with someone new.

I also enjoyed the addition of chapters from the past set in Afghanistan which added a bit of extra depth to the overall story.

Deadeye is a great addition to this binge-worthy series and something I’d recommend if you are looking for a quick, action packed read.

I love this series and I have to say that I think Detective Jason Smith is probably my favourite fictional detective at the moment – I love the wit that the author has given his character and it was great it this book, he has created a series that I would pick up without even reading the blurb!

This book involves the team having to crack a really tough case, and it was good!!! I like the curve balls that were thrown in to keep you guessing as to who the “Deadeye” might be – plenty of action, great interaction and another fabulous read!!

I liked that we got to meet the new DI and I liked seeing how the team dynamics worked out – I am definitely looking forward to reading more in the series!!

it is 5 stars from me for this one, I loved it and it is one I will be very highly recommending!!

Another great read in the Jason Smith series. Jason is still trying to win back his wife and daughter at the start of this book. Also he has a new DI who not only has Jason’s promotion if he hadn’t of lashed out but to make matters worse he’s the nephew of his boss Smyth. As if this isn’t enough to contend with he starts to suffer with crippling migraines and there’s also a top marksman going around shooting people. A page turning read following Jason as he try’s to cope with all these obstacles. A definite 5 star read.

DS Jason Smith has his hands full as there has been a murder in the local park. A man has been shot however from the damage caused and the accuracy of it, this isn’t a normal gun. alternate chapters take us to Afghanistan several years beforehand where one of the men has just learnt he is to be a father. They take on the Taliban in a battle and his friend sees a sniper but does nothing and the father to be gets hit. Jason is still fighting his own battles still being separated from his wife and daughter. He is now doing everything he can to win them back, knowing the error of his ways. When a further victim is found someone has them literally in their sights, but why and most importantly who? Jason is his normal self and doesn’t take things lying down especially when something doesn’t feel quite right. I like Jason and his tenacity, he can be an awkward so-and-so but definitely someone you would want on your side. a cleverly thought out plot and wonderful characters and a little humour along the way. Brilliant! Love it and very much look forward to the next in the series.

Even though this is book 7 in the series you don’t need to have read the first six, but I would advise it so that you can get the background and learn about the main character in the series.

The main character is Tyrone Swift, a former met police officer who now works as a PI. In this case he is asked by a distant cousin to investigate what happened to her sister when she was attacked and drowned after being thrown off a ferry.

As with every investigation Swift has a massive list of suspects, especially considering the dead girl was a recovering alcoholic who seemed intent on upsetting as many people as she could. Due to the list I was really engaged in the investigation from the start and couldn’t work out who did it until the big reveal.

Along with the main storyline we also have Tyrone’s relationship with his young daughter, which i enjoyed reading about how they interact.

The story has enough twists and a couple of red herrings thrown in, which keeps the book interesting and, although the start was a bit slow, the story soon got into the case and had me hooked.

Another great story sorry this is late of series, I hope he writes some more. Jason is a flawed but great detective, if they made a movie Daniel Craig at be a good choice to play him. Here's hoping Stewart continues with some more cases for Jason!!!

An assassin is picking off York’s citizens from a distance and DS Smith is living alone with his dogs after making the biggest mistake of his life. The new DI has a suspect in custody however DS Smith thinks it’s the wrong person. Is Jason Smith right? And can he get his wife and child back?

Stewart Giles kept me on the edge of my seat yet again. Even when I suspected I knew who the villain was I couldn’t identify him amongst the characters we had met at that stage. A good read with some unexpected twists in the case and in DS Smith’s personal life.
