Ella Couture didn't mean to save herself. But success runs in the family and Ella, a fiery and self-made interior decorator, never wanted to settle for anything less than a quality man.
But another disappointing breakup has Ella flirting with idea of a meaningless fling – because this whole v-card business has gone on for way too long.
When Ella visits her brother Lance for the weekend, she finds herself all alone with his teammate, Ryan. The rugged hockey star is tall, chiseled and gorgeous – and based on his past, he won't get attached.
It's a nice fantasy... but Ella isn't the type of girl to sleep with her brother's best friend.
That's what she keeps telling herself, anyway...
Live by the code, die by the code.
On the ice, tough guy Ryan Ryder enforces the code of the game with his fists. And he won't let anyone mess with the team's superstar center, Lance Couture.
Ryan might sleep around, but he knows to keep his distance when Lance's sister visits the two roommates at their Boston condo. The code has a rule about family members, after all: they're strictly off-limits.
Not that Ryan's worried about breaking that rule – he's already heard an earful about how insane his best bud's younger sis is.
But Lance never said anything about Ella being a cute babe with an adorable laugh.
And he definitely never said anything about how she's finally ready to lose her v-card...
But if Ryan can't keep his hands off Ella, not only will he stab his best friend in the back – he'll ruin everything he's worked for.
So why can't he get that girl out of his mind?
Forbidden Puck is a 60,000 word, slow-burn hockey romance! This stand-alone novel is the first entry in the Boston Brawlers series. Narrated in alternating first person. No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA guaranteed.
This is another one where I started the audiobook without ever reading the description. One day I’ll learn. SPOILERS this is that “forbidden sister” trope and you honestly can’t do much with that kind of book. They are ALL the same. So my description will seem like a spoiler, but it’s not much different than what the author tells you in her description.
Ella (virgin, interior designer) gets invited to stay with her hockey player brother, Lance, under the pretense of a visit, but he really wants her to decorate the bachelor pad he shares with his teammate, Ryan (hockey player, former whore). Obviously, all family members are off limits and Ella is no different. When Lance dumps his sister to spend time with his butt model girlfriend, Ryan steps in to entertain her. They have some sweet and meaningful conversations, not just flirting. By the end of the second night, they end up at the apartment and make out. When she wants to give him her virginity, he turns her down. They end up cuddling for the night and when Lance returns home, Ryan makes her hide under the bed and then promise not to tell her brother. Ella is super against lying and she hates Ryan for making her do that. She ignores him the rest of the day. Lance learns the truth, shit hits the fan, all is resolved. Then Ryan takes Ella’s v-card and declares his love for her…. Three days after they met. I can do insta-love when it’s done right. I just didn’t feel like Ryan and Ella had enough passion to make it believable. Plus, there wasn’t any sex in this until 80% mark. You get one bang and that’s it. Blah.
I listened to the audio, which was decent. I think it helped me believe Ryan was genuine in his feelings because the narrator had a tender voice.
Forbidden Puck is...how to say this?... Interesting, promising and yet very silly. Yes silly stupid.
I like the banter. I like the plot. It is not my first time I read best friend's sister romance. The banter between the characters are cute. However Miss Winters did not dwelled or developed it to be more sophisticated. So it ended up with a lot of silliness. Some part even so stupid.
To be honest I do not know I should laugh or winced with pain.
This was a terrible, terrible book I am sad to say. The writing was awful, neither character was even remotely believable, and the internal monologues were repetitive. I couldn't wait for it to end because it was just such a silly straightforward story. The entire premise for the character's conflict is completely ridiculous and the author spent far too much time trying to justify it and repeat it over and over to the reader.
I can't quite express how bad this book was. Very disappointed but maybe the terrible pun in the title should have given it away.
First should I be offended? They keep saying being traded to Winnipeg would be a bad thing. Can’t handle the COLD…Bahahaha.
I am not a fan of insta-love, but I liked the way this book went about it. Ella and Ryan got to know each other even with the chemistry but it was because of her brother his best friend that they kept getting thrown together.
Lance, Ella’s brother was kinda a douche; just because he is the star player doesn’t mean he should get to throw his weight around. I didn’t like his temper tantrum.
Narration was great, I am a fan of Aaron and Carly they did a great job with this book.
This book was absolutely terrible. Just because Ella is a virgin doesn’t mean she has to be an immature brat! I didn’t feel the chemistry between her and Radar at all. And big brother Lance is a total jerk! I planned to read the whole series, but honestly, I’m not going to waste my time!
Second of this author's hockey books that I've read and although these hockey romances don't get too far from the formula of boy/girl/girl's brother going to kill boy, this still read pleasantly.
Give this a read for an enjoyable read if you admire honesty and honey Badgers.
I love hockey and contemporary romances. So this was something I was happy to give a try. I'm glad I did too. I really enjoyed this. The only thing I didn't like about this book was Ella's brother. He was a complete jerk. The way he treated people made me mad. Thankfully he got his act together in the end. Everybody was happy in the end and so was I.
Forbidden Puck June Winters June Winters scores with FORBIDDEN PUCK. Ella Couture heads to Boston for the weekend to visit her NHL star brother, Lance. She ends up spending more time with his line/roommate, Ryan Ryder. The two know that they need to stay away from each other, but…This contemporary sports romance is suitable for adult audiences.
This is the first book that I read by June Winters. I enjoyed her writing style and quickly added some of her other books to my “want to read” list. She does a great job with her character development and plot. I like Ella. She is authentic and hard working. Ryan is a great character. He credits his recent hockey success to his chemistry with Lance. That puts an interesting twist into the story.
I enjoyed the similarities between Ryan and Ella. For example, Ryan doesn’t know if women are interested in him because he is a hockey star and that Ella doesn’t know if guys just want to date her because she is a virgin, and they want to be her first. I also appreciated, Ryan’s code and Ella’s honesty policy.
The other characters in the story added some interesting tension to the plot. Ella’s ex-boyfriend Mathew is a piece of work. Lance’s personality is fascinating. He is a bit self-centered. He does have a good heart though.
FORBIDDEN PUCK was well-written. The story flowed well and held my interest from start to finish. I love how the epilogue concluded the story. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
Buona lettura!
'Within seconds of meeting him, I felt like I knew him.'
Forbidden Puck is the first book in the Boston Brawlers by June Winters. This is the story of the sassy honest Ella Couture, an Interior designer and sister to the famous hockey player Lance, and Ryan Ryder her brothers teammate and best friend.
I haven't read any hockey romances before but after speaking to one of my friends she suggested this book as a start into the genre. I have to say I went into this with no expectations and was pleasantly surprised. I loved Ella, she was such a realistic character and I loved her honestly policy. I liked Ryan but felt he was slightly feminine at times, maybe that's just cause I went from reading a Mafia book into this but it was interesting to have a more sensitive MMC.
The spice in this was a great slow build, chapter 16 and 27 were just 🔥. And the epilogue was so cute. This was definitely an introduction book to June's series and into the world of the Boston Brawlers.

I actually don’t know where to begin with this book. Hockey romance is so hit or miss and this is a MAJOR miss. I think if you’re going to write a hockey romance you have to make it somewhat realistic…this was giving Hallmark Movie in the worst way possible. It also felt like the FMC was absolutely clueless & an airhead 95 percent of the time 😅

Dnf 17% Love interest is.... missing a tooth 'not like other guys' has a fancy chest for his pat hook ups panties goes for the sister has a horrible inner dialog
I've said it before: I'm a sucker for a best friend's sibling story, and this was a beautifully executed example of a good one. I've read the two previous books and got a kick out of seeing their heroes mentioned from the other side of the ice. I got such enjoyment out of watching Ryan and Ella try to fight their attraction and I thought it was a marvel to see him step up and be the better man because he believed she shouldn't settle for less. The banter between the siblings was silly and fun, though I thought Lance deserved to be put in his place a heck of a lot more often than it actually happens. The radical honestly policy was an interesting twist to the plot and makes for a fascinating stumbling block at times. I'm excitedly awaiting the next book that takes place in this league. I received a complimentary copy of this book.
Ok, I adore hockey and love hockey romance stories. Forbidden Puck is a perfect example of what a hockey romance should be. First, the romance itself. Superbly done. A classic rogue turned to lover tale but with no cheap shots. Instead this story has a raw honesty to it (and I love the honesty between the leads too). I also love the amazing chemistry that Ella and Ryder have, no matter how they try to ignore and resist it. This is just all beautifully done. Then there’s the hockey part, also beautifully done and giving the genuine life of a hockey pro feeling (including some actual hockey action) that I crave in this kind of story.
Very immature sister of a professional hockey player who doesn’t know anything about hockey and judges all players as stupid is one of the least sympathetic heroines I’ve read recently. Somehow she’s 22 and owns her own successful interior design business catering to the rich and famous?
Of course 22 year olds are usually somewhat immature. But this one is written a bit more like a 15 year old. And her brother is written like he’s actually as dumb as rocks. I’m not sure I can read his story.
Ryan is, of course, an unapologetic slut. He does fall in love with Ella in 2 days though. Their love is sweet and I think everyone reading can tell they’re actually going to break up if it were real life.

i give it a 2 cause the first 50-100 pages were ok. but then it really took a turn for the worse. this whole story happens in in 3 days. on day 3 he tells her he loves her hahah 🙄 😂from meeting to falling in love and being in a serious relationship. then epilogue is 1 year later 😂. i would pass. much better hockey books. not only that but each chapter recaps in the other persons point of view. so ur rereading everything from his perspective and vice versa and frankly it’s annoying and not needed. i highly recommend not reading.
This book had a great concept and the characters were likeable enough, but the story felt rushed. I thought that falling in love over a 3 day weekend and risking careers for this alleged Love was a little too far fetched and I was left a little disappointed.
I skimmed a portion of this and read some of it, but I read enough for it to count and for me to know that it was not great. I didn't love a lot of it. And it all moved really, really fast. It was a quick book though.
