About the author
Brian Michael Bendis
4,420 books2,627 followersA comic book writer and erstwhile artist. He has won critical acclaim (including five Eisner Awards) and is one of the most successful writers working in mainstream comics. For over eight years Bendis’s books have consistently sat in the top five best sellers on the nationwide comic and graphic novel sales charts.
Though he started as a writer and artist of independent noir fiction series, he shot to stardom as a writer of Marvel Comics' superhero books, particularly Ultimate Spider-Man.
Bendis first entered the comic world with the "Jinx" line of crime comics in 1995. This line has spawned the graphic novels Goldfish, Fire, Jinx, Torso (with Marc Andreyko), and Total Sell Out. Bendis is writing the film version of Jinx for Universal Pictures with Oscar-winner Charlize Theron attached to star and produce.
Bendis’s other projects include the Harvey, Eisner, and Eagle Award-nominated Powers (with Michael Avon Oeming) originally from Image Comics, now published by Marvel's new creator-owned imprint Icon Comics, and the Hollywood tell-all Fortune and Glory from Oni Press, both of which received an "A" from Entertainment Weekly.
Bendis is one of the premiere architects of Marvel's "Ultimate" line: comics specifically created for the new generation of comic readers. He has written every issue of Ultimate Spider-Man since its best-selling launch, and has also written for Ultimate Fantastic Four and Ultimate X-Men, as well as every issue of Ultimate Marvel Team-Up, Ultimate Origin and Ultimate Six.
Brian is currently helming a renaissance for Marvel’s AVENGERS franchise by writing both New Avengers and Mighty Avengers along with the successful ‘event’ projects House Of M, Secret War, and this summer’s Secret Invasion.
He has also previously done work on Daredevil, Alias, and The Pulse.

The only good to come out of Ultimatum
This is some of Bendis' best yet again. The first half is a really nice Venom-centric story that does some interesting stuff with him and is almost a character study for Eddie (even if it is mostly ripped off and adapted from the PS2 game that was supposed to be in-continuity but this story essentially retconned it out) and it works out pretty well, he also took the concept of Ultimatum and focused on the smaller scale stuff and made it actually good and interesting.
War of the Symbiotes takes places from Issues #123-128 and it’s a really fun time, considering that this is only the second time Venom has played a role in this book since he first appeared back in Issue #33. It focuses a lot on Eddie, in fact, you could argue Eddie is the protagonist as a lot of the story is told from his POV as a flashback; the developments Bendis introduces especially for Mary Jane are great, the Gwen subplot is also really interesting and good because it focuses so much in the very existential and body horror-esque concept behind why she’s back. I will say I am a little bit annoyed it is essentially an adaptation of the plot from the 2005 PS2/GameCube/Xbox game's plot, as that game was supposed to be in continuity with the book at one point (even being written by Bendis himself) but that’s more a superfluous nitpick than an actual criticism.
The Annual is then a fun, self-contained story that focuses on Peter and MJ's relationship in a really cool way and continues Bendis' strong character writing from the main book, although I’m not much of a fan of David Lafuente's art, but it’s a book that also features the introduction of Ultimate Mysterio so I like it anyways cause I love Mysterio.
And then the Ultimatum tie-ins come in, they’re all really strong and focus on a lot of the more human aspects of the concept behind Ultimatum, Bendis manages to inject so much character, dread and tragedy into such a horrific event and it’s by far the best set of tie-ins to the event. Requiem is also a wonderful little pair of stories that give ol' J. Jonah Jameson some much needed and really good character development and even feels like Bendis' final thesis on Spider-Man to an extent.
Stuart Immonen's art remains awesome across the board, very dynamic and fun, his take on Venom is so cool looking and I adore it, and seeing the return of Bagley for both Requiem issue was so fun; just a complete delight to see unfold.
Overall, Bendis took this book out with a bang and took what he was given and put out some of his strongest work yet. Just Amazing.
