It started with a window that was jammed shut. Pretty simple, right? All I wanted was to open the windows while I tidied the house. I’d been after my no-good husband to do it for months, but he never did. And then he shacked up with his secretary, leaving me with a pile of bills, husband-free for the first time in ten years, and with a house that was falling apart.

As my first middle-aged romance, I think romance writers are missing out on a brushed-aside, underrated little niche here. If age is but a number, then forty-something people are perfectly and rightfully entitled to star as the central characters in their own romances. With Imogen Irving comes a relatable, though highly insecure forty-year-old divorcée with an ex-husband who left her with a broken marriage, a broken house, a broken heart and a broken sense of self. She’s loaded with the perceived flaws of a woman who is both wildly insecure from her middle-aged body and considerably withdrawn after a fresh and failed marriage.
A divorce newly behind her and her house in need of a dire remodel, with zero savings, a slew of household expenses, what Imogen really needs is a domestic god to wave a wand and magic her unending troubles away. She’ll settle for a big, friendly tatted giant with genuine charm, easy banter, and the tools to really bring her womanly wiles to life. Jesse makes her feel like a wanted woman, shows her what it’s like to be a wanted woman, and what it means to be a desirable man.
Imogen didn’t know men like this existed, and with all his validating attention, masculine appeal and a generous nature, she never thought she’d have the privilege of meeting one. Smart enough to do the right thing, kind enough to say the right thing, he’s a perfect balm to her many doubts, a sweet comfort to her self-esteem, and a hot shower to her flaming libido. By the time I’m forty, I hope to get stuck with a handyman with the voice of an angel and the personality to match. Jesse, for me, was the blue-collared star of this story.
Needing something easy, entertaining, undemanding, I picked this up on a whim. A well-written beginner to the series, Hammered was a decent choice. I have to admit, it wasn’t the consummate example of a refined, well-developed story with all the trimmings but I appreciated what it represented in theme, its focus on older love interests and the premise presents a fabulous set-up. With themes of later-life foibles, personal insecurity, inhibition, vulnerability and a resurgence of womanhood, Hammered was endearing, if a little more uneventful. I liked the steady progress of Jessie and Imogen's relationship; although it progresses well, it didn't feel fully-formed.
After her self-worth took a dramatic blow, a rugged handyman does more to improve Imogen's home and her self-image in less than a month than her twelve-year marriage ever did. Jesse O’Neil redefines, jazzes up and spins the concept of a prince charming at your service on its axis - he’s got charm and generosity in spades, the manners of a gentleman, the look of a bad boy, a mountain of a man with a mountainous heart. He has the audacious vixen in Imogen rattling her ribcage, bouncing back with the vigour of a desperate woman.
If this book shares anything, it intimates that life really does start at forty. A blue-collared prince charming with the wit and good nature to match meets a vulnerable heroine in need of acceptance and much-needed attention. I wouldn’t label Hammered as a love story, it’s the dawn of a potential pairing, the kickoff, a promising blossom. A house touched by a man with magical hands, a woman touched my his magical words, friends without qualms, and the idea that age means nothing when we’re all people looking for the same things, Hammered is an easy, grounded and flirty portrayal of upper bracket romance.
Content Warning: Mentions multiple miscarriages, swearing, a descriptive sex scene and a lot of heavy drinking. Cheating/infidelity within a marriage (past, but referenced throughout). The heroine is a plus-size woman, and the storyline portrays her various Insecurities regarding her weight and appearance.
Some Concerns
1) This is my second Jasinda Wilder book, and following in the shoes of my first book from her Badd Brothers series, this story follows suit in that it does possess shortcomings. If the structure and exposition of Wilder’s books are to be probed, they do suffer from substance and a deeper development, and conclude with a hasty and unsupported finish. The romance is suitably and pleasantly slow-burn, but the conclusion just consisted of a quick explanation about Jesse’s ex in the final scene. I think an epilogue was direly needed. The romance isn’t as fully-formed as it could have been. The story explores the subtle ways Jessie helps Imogen move forward and accept her body the way it is, but it doesn't feel like a romance or a love story to great likeness. There are no declarations of love.
2) Jesse is a charming, gruff sweetheart. He makes a man out of the phrase ‘heart of gold.' The problem for me was that the ending felt so much more like just a beginning for these two. It’s completely new. It’s completely fresh for them. And it ends on a ‘feelings are brewing, but we don’t know where it’s going to go or if it will go anywhere at all. We’ve both got baggage, but we’ll see what happens’. The story lacked the satisfaction of a solid connection. I needed more from it. The pacing of the relationship was very slow and I think it resulted in a relationship that felt a tad anticlimactic.
3) While the story had a slow and steady pace, there were parts and places of the story that felt underdeveloped. I don’t think the author really takes advantage of opportunities. Most of Jesse and Imogen’s conversations are formed from casual banter, support and easy conversation. I loved this, but they also don’t have many deeper conversations. For example, Imogen cannot have children and this is never discussed in any real detail or at length. Overall, I think the story and the characters’ lives/feelings/relationship required more development.
4) Imogen accepted and even welcomed a lot less than she was worth. This really tells the reader a lot about her sense of self value. She has a low self esteem. I was a bit startled by her motivation remain in a marriage that was clearly a farce and even more surprised that she was willing to forgive and overlook her wretched husband's adultery. As much as I liked her and appreciated her relatability, I felt that the heroine didn't really move past or begin to accept her struggle with body image as a larger lady. I was glad she had a friend who was willing to push her where needed because there came a point where the heroine felt too fixated on her flaws. For the most part, she let her wretched excuse of an ex keep her down for the count and keep her trapped in her own doubt. There is a very central and concentrated focus on Imogen's physical appearance and body image, so there is a lot of insecurity that is expressed and felt throughout the novel
5) I do prefer a dual POV so I was a little disappointed that we don't get Jesse’s POV.

Let me start with... Jesse can come to my house and fix WHATEVER he likes. Heck, I might even intentionally break something just for him to come over and repair it. The eye candy game is strong in this book and I LOVE it!!
If you need something to compare Hammered with, allow me to help. This new series can be easily compared to Jasinda's Big Girls series. However, this is much more mature audience. It's sexy, funny, and so hard to put down. Jesse and Imogen had me in stitches from start to finish.
Hammered is the Wilder's way of saying "Forties is and will always be... owning your sexiness." While the book is funny, it is equally heartfelt. I related so much to Imogen's character and I loved that Jesse was there to bring her back to her own. A chemistry like theirs is just what today's society needs to see.
This is was the perfect initiation to a series that I can already see will be a fun set of tools to read. I got Hammered on the bus and on the train... so I suggest you do the same.

I don't know about everyone else, but I'm over here with the unpopular opinion. Hammered was my first Jasinda Wilder book and most likely my last if I'm being honest. I had high expectations and it fell...flat. Hammered, if you will.
Imogen is fresh off of a divorce, living alone in her fixer-upper home. She needs help with her window so she calls the sexy contractors she found online. Jesse shows up and the rest is history.
Imogen has really low self esteem because her ex was a douche. She's got a crappy job. She does have one best friend that makes some scenes memorable. There was a slow build between Jesse and Imogen doing the deed, but the build up to the deed was good. Good story telling, banter, ect. It fell flat for me in that these characters are 40-somethings. They acted like college students. Very immature, functioning alcoholics. Seriously, all Imogen does is drink.
Hammered was a fun read, don't get me wrong. But if you told me that this was Jasinda Wilder's first book, I wouldn't have been surprised. As a seasoned romance author, I expected way more from her. Romantic comedies can be some of the most well-written books out there and this was not it.

WOW! This book had me sweating it was so darn hot. Jasinda literally had me swooning over Jesse. I loved how this book wasn't about younger 20 somethings. It was ADULT. Not YA, not coming of age. It was just straight adult and normal every day people with jobs, bills, life struggles. So to me that made the story so much more relatable. Her characters were spot on!
I love love love Imogen. She reminds me so much of Stella in the movie How Stella Got Her Groove Back. Shes sassy, sweet, and such a beautiful person from the inside out. Jesse is a total alpha male. Which to me is PERFECTION! I loved him hard. Hes a mans man. He works hard, and loved soooo much harder.
This story was AMAZING. I cant wait for more from this series because if this book is any indication on whats coming.... I will be more of a hot mess than usual.

Just 'ok' this book was for me.
It really concentrated on the heroine's insecurities (constantly) and how the hero helps her overcome them. And that was it. That was all the storyline. Them flirting, falling, her putting herself down and him trying to bring her back up. It was ok, a bit dull, not something i'd recommend.

First of all, these people are supposed to be in their 40s, but they're acting like children. I mean, even to the point where they "bond" over kids movie quotes. It's weird. Neither of them even have kids.
The premise is so hot, and I was hoping for some porn with a little plot thrown in. But the book is too long and at halfway through they've only managed a little flirting and a few kisses. Which is fine sometimes, but like I said... this premise works on the PWP basis only.
I was gonna push through to the sex because there are a lot of reviews out there that say it's a scorcher. But something just really pissed me off. At one point they share quasi-nudes with each other and the girl is all "Waaa, don't you dare show this to your friends!" And of course he doesn't. But then she goes and shows her friend his picture. Maybe it's irrational, but I'm mad about it and that's my final straw.
I don't like these people. He just randomly shows up at her house and does huge construction projects without even asking her. She's a tease and a wet blanket all rolled up together. They're both annoying.
Anyway, whatever. I quit.

Oh wow I devoured this book!!!! I adored Imogen and Jesse made me swoon! This book was so funny, sexy, heartfelt, and just such a joy to read. I could not put it down. I loved that the characters were in their 40’s and dealt with real life circumstances. I can’t wait for book 2! Audra is an amazing best friend to Imogen, and I loved her part in this book! Such an awesome start to a new series!

I love the premise of this story, it was a fun summer read that definitely had me laughing. Recent divorcée needs contracting help for her falling apart home and in walks Jesse. A sexy, kind and flirtatious man who is as knowledgeable with construction as he is with flirting. Imogen is fresh out of a terrible marriage where her ex cheated on her and siphoned money out of their joint bank account. Feeling out of shape and undesirable, Imogen feels the spark of mutual attraction with Jesse, even though it terrifies her. The banter between Jesse and Imogen was fun, they both love movie references and quote movies at random. They have such a strong chemistry even as they initially fought the attraction and then gave into it. Of course nothing is perfect and mistakes are made on both sides, but they figure things out and decide to give a relationship a chance, making up in spectacular fashion. I can’t wait to see what happens in book two: Drilling - with Imogen’s best friend Audra and Jesse’s work buddy Franco!

It started with a window that was jammed shut. Pretty simple, right? All I wanted was to open the windows while I tidied the house. I’d been after my no-good husband to do it for months, but he never did. And then he shacked up with his secretary, leaving me with a pile of bills, husband-free for the first time in ten years, and with a house that was falling apart.
The ad popped up on the side of my social media feed—a local contracting agency willing to do pretty much anything. Since I don’t really know a screwdriver from a ratchet, I gave them a call.
And let me tell you, the ad was NOT lying. Jesse O’Neill can do it ALL…and looks amazing doing it.
He fixed my window, so I called him back to fix the sagging, splintery front steps. Which led to him fixing my kitchen sink. And then he recarpeted my stairs. And then fixed the squeak in my bed.
He was supposed to fix my house, not my rusty, sputtering libido. And certainly not my broken heart.

Bring a fan
You will need a fan to get through the hot scenes. These characters are easy to relate to.Jesse and Imogen's story felt so real. I wasn't sure we were going to hear Jesse's backstory,thank heavens we do. It made me feel more invested in him. I understand him now. Can't wait for more books!

WOW! This book had me sweating it was so darn hot. Jasinda literally had me swooning over Jesse. I loved how this book wasn't about younger 20 somethings. It was ADULT. Not YA, not coming of age. It was just straight adult and normal every day people with jobs, bills, life struggles. So to me that made the story so much more relatable. Her characters were spot on!
I love love love Imogen. She reminds me so much of Stella in the movie How Stella Got Her Groove Back. She's sassy, sweet, and such a beautiful person from the inside out. Jesse is a total alpha male. Which to me is PERFECTION! I loved him hard. He's a man's man. He works hard and loves soooo much harder.
This story was AMAZING. I can't wait for more from this series because if this book is any indication on what's coming...I will be more of a hot mess than usual.

I have to say that this book was better than I thought it would be going in to it. I liked that the couple was older, liked that they had issues, knew that about themselves for the most part. Sure there was some drama, but they talked things through and still wanted to start something knowing that they weren't sure where they were going. And I have to say...as hot as the sex scenes were (and they were blistering) I thought it just as hot that Jesse kept fixing up Imogen's house. 😁

This book was witty and sexy. The banter and writing was amazing as always.

OMG I loved this book, another fab series to look forward to for this author. Based on this book I’m definitely going to read the rest of the series. Jesse is hot as sin and Imogen has just had a rough time with her ex husband. I smiled whilst reading most of the book. Definitely recommend this book

Holy Shit. I absolutely love Jesse & Imogen’s story. Who doesn’t like a sexy AF handyman, who with his sexy talk could make you melt. Imogen’s ex husband has really done a job on her and meeting Jesse is exactly what she needs. They are sweet, sexy and smokin hot together that I didn’t want too put my kindle down. Another amazing 5 Star read by Jasinda and I can’t wait for Franco’s story next.

If I’m being honest I started this book with slight trepidation’s, mostly cause I’ve never been into the handyman sort of romance novels BUT that was all before meeting Jesse from Dad Bod Contracting. I’m STILL speechless after reading this in one sitting, not only is this man described so perfectly but his personality? It had me squealing and clutching a pillow to my face while smiling like a lunatic.
This book started off with Imogen a heartbroken divorcee who has isolated herself in her own bubble because she’s too scared of getting heart broken after her “douche canoe” (Btw I love that and will now use that term. Lol) ex husband cheated. Add in a bit of alcohol, some weird decisions in trying to open a window and in comes Jesse who not only manages to fix that window but also manages to heal the broken hearted woman who no longer believed in herself.
There are no words to describe my love for this book and the character of Jesse.. can Dad Bod contracting be real though? Cause I would so buy a fixer upper house just to hire them. Haha.
I can’t wait for the rest of the books in this universe to come out cause I’m just gonna sit here impatiently dying for more. 😍😍

Gah!! Where to start?! There are so many awesome aspects of this new series. First I adore the heroine's name - IMOGEN. It truly matches her personality and beauty. I also LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the fact that the hero/heroine are a little older than the typical book that's out there. This book is not only the right amounts of hot and sexy but also heart-warming, emotional, personal growth and proving that everyone has sh*t to face in their lives and how you decide to face it and move forward says a lot about ones character. I seriously wish that every woman had a Jesse! **Also trigger warnings** Imogen suffered years of infertility, a miscarriage and infidelity from her dirt bag of an ex. I cried so much while reading the emotional struggles that Imogen faced...I've been there and Jasinda and Jack's words were like an outlet of my emotions from my own personal losses and triumphs.

I LOVED LOVED LOVED this book!!!!! It was so refreshing to read a book with older characters that i could totally relate to on many different levels. Don't get me wrong I love a hot alpha male, however sometimes them being so young gets old. I could relate so much to Imogen and what she has experienced prior in her life and what she is currently feeling with Jesse. This was a well written book that kept me turning the pages to find out what would happen and laughing like I haven't in quite some time while reading a book. I am SO looking forward to reading Drilled and the rest of the Dad Bod series. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book for an honest review.

OH My goodness! Loved this so much! Imogen and Jesse have intensity! Great balance of a romantic story and can’t keep my hands off you passion. Bar is high again because of Jessie to keep wishing to find an guy like that in my life! This story made my heart feel good and I had a few moments of laugh out loud. Jasinda does it again with this amazing story! Must Read!

AMAZING! This book was so HOT! Imogen has just gotten divorced. Her ex left her with nothing but a house that needs a lot of work and bad self esteem. When she needs some help with her broken window she calls Dad Bod Contracting. Jesse works with Dad Bod Contracting and comes to fix her window. They have chemistry and can’t get enough of staring at each other. I can’t wait for the next book in this series! An amazing read that I highly recommend!

I liked it! Maybe the heroine was a bit insecure at times but I tend to be that way so maybe I get it. I love HGTV so this scenario was fun for me.
