يعد هذا الكتاب الصغير من أجمل الكتب التي كتبت بطريقة شاعرية عن EXOTISM الغرائبية في الأدب الفرنسي، وأهمية هذا الكتاب تكمن في كشفه عن المخزون التصوري للأدباء الفرنسيين في القرنين التاسع عشر والعشرين، ورؤيتهم لشرقنا العربي والإسلامي، كما أنه يقوم بعرض واسع لرحلات هؤلاء الأدباء وعملية إدراكهم وفهمهم للشرق وبحثهم عن فك غموضه وإبهامه وعاداته وعقلياته ضمن اللغة والتاريخ والخطابة الغربية وعمليات التماحك الديني.
فضلاً عن ذلك يزدونا هذا الكتاب بمادة اثنوغرافية غزيرة عن حياة وعادات شعبنا العربي وشعوبنا الإسلامية في الشرق في فضاء القرن التاسع عشر، اعتمد هذا الكاتب على أكثر من مائة رحلة ورواية تخص الشرق العربي الإسلامي.

في الواقع لم يعتمد بيير جوردا على أدب الرحلات وحسب إنما على الروايات والقصائد التي تناولت الشرق، والتي شكلت نوعاً من الاستمرارية المنظمة لما يطلق عليه عادةً بالاستشراق، وهي المعرفة الغزيرة بالشرق ووصفه وإعادة توزيعه وتشكيله ضمن فروع الدراسة العلمية، وإن كان الاهتمام ينصب عادة بالبحث عن الغرائبية فإن الكاتب تناول مقام الشرق وحياته وعاداته وجغرافيته وثقافته كما ظهرت في الأدب الفرنسي، ولا يدخر جهداً أحياناً من النقد والتقويم والسخرية من الرؤية المبالغ بها أو الرؤية الخيالية للرحالة الأدباء ولا سيما الرومانتيكيين منهم، حيث أطلق عليهم بالمبرأين من السحر.

Growing up in a family with roots in the rural Auvergne region, Jourde developed an early fascination with the tensions between urban modernity and isolated provincial life, themes that would permeate his writing.
Jourde has taught French literature at the University of Grenoble (formerly Université Stendhal), where he specialized in 19th-century authors like Joris-Karl Huysmans, even co-editing a comprehensive edition of Huysmans' novels and short stories for the prestigious Bibliothèque de la Pléiade collection in 2019. هي رؤية أو دراسة الكاتب للشرق العربي والإسلامي.. من خلال رحلات الغربيين لفك الغموض ومعرفة العادات وعقليات وتاريخ وغرائبية العرب والمسلمين وذلك في القرن التاسع عشر .. وتناول الكتاب من آسيا الصغرى إلى سورية ومصر إلى الجزائر وتونس والمغرب .. كتاب في أدب الرحلات .. إذن هو يدرس بلاد العرب والمسلمين دراسة علمية .. فهو المنافس الإسلامي للغرب .. ويذكر أن عبارة الشرق لم يذكر إلا في عام ١٨٣٥ .. على يد لامارتين .. ومن تلك الرحلات ظهر الاستشراق .. الكتاب ضعيف جداً .. وغير مترابط .. ولا يفهم منه المقصود ..
