கார்ல் மார்க்ஸின் முகநூல் பதிவுகள் ஆழமாகவும் சிலது அபத்தமாகவும் இருக்கும். பெரும்பான்மையான பதிவுகளில் பாலியல் சொற்களும் கிண்டல்களும் இழையோடும். இந்த நாவலும் அது போலத்தான்.

நான் லீனியர் கதை சொல்லல் துருத்திகொண்டு இருக்கிறது. மூர்த்தியை மகேந்திரன் அழைத்து போனது எதற்காக அந்த இடத்தில்? நாவலை இன்னும் சிறப்பாக எடிட் செய்திருக்கலாம். காலச்சுவடு பதிப்பித்து இருந்தால் மூன்று பேர் கொண்ட குழுவே சரி செய்திருக்கும்.

ராஜேந்திரன் வேலைக்கு போவது பற்றி சோமுவின் நிலைப்பாடு என்ன? ரஞ்சிதா ஓடிப்போனதை கேட்டவுடன் அவரது மனநிலை என்ன? அவரது மரணம் எப்படி பிள்ளைகளால் ஊரால் ஏற்றுகொள்ளப்பட்டது? காவிரி கரையில் வாழ்ந்த தலைமுறை மாற்றங்களின் கதை என்றார் இன்னுமே ஆழமாக பேசியிருக்கலாம்.

Set in the villages of Kumbakonam, this novel is primarily about the changing dynamics of land relationships in the Cauvery delta villages. Tamil Cauvery Delta had been primarily agrarian for thousands of years. The social relationship between various castes, the way people interact, their customs have been defined by this feudal nature and the relationship they shared with the land. What happens when this starts to change, how does it affect the people their lives, their relations, how they start looking at the land itself. There are many novels written in various Indian languages on similar themes, like say Mannum Manidharum by Sivarama Karanth which chronicles the changing fortunes of a rural family. Typically these novels have been written with Bhramins being the central character, they were also mostly the landowning community. This novel chronicles it from the middle caste who are involved in the act of farming itself. How they find themselves in a real spot of bother due to various factors affecting agriculture, the vagaries of monsoon and the non-availability of water due to inter state disputes, the growing non-profitability of agriculture, etc. So there is more pressure on land, as it is getting converted to plots and sold for real estate.

These changes are chronicled through the decline of the erstwhile Mirazdar family of Somu, it is through Somu's grandson Moorthy we get to see the changes happening in their family. Throughout the novel, we see that the family slowly losing the land its holding too, its prosperity, and the position in the village. There are changes happening around them that affect their social status in the village. Somu himself is resigned to the fact that he is helpless and his sons are no longer able to work unified towards the betterment of the family. His elder son Rajendran who at the beginning of the novel is shown as an idealistic supporter of DMK, at the end of the novel owing to poverty starts working in a hardware shop as an assistant, the stages in which he gradually becomes from being an honorable villager to that of an employee and the ensuing mental tribulations he faces is chronicled brilliantly. Initially, there is resistance but then slowly he gets used to this new life, but inside his heart he still bitter at the transition life has taken.

Much like how the people change like we have Visalakshi who like a man holds the land as a symbol of power, but she has a strained relationship with her husband, ends up killing herself. This characters life makes you wonder if the idea of manhood is just a factor of power like women also become a man like when they start identifying with power, at the end of the novel Somu criticizes Visalakshi's husband Kaliyamurthy saying he should not have left her, he retorts if he had continued living with her, he would have killed her, Somu rightly says then she would have liked her. Like land and women in the feudal world bless people who are ready to shed blood for them who fight for it and ready to die for it. Somu belongs to this generation who look at land as a woman, but the next generation does not look at this way, it becomes just a means to make money. This change in meaning is well documented by how a new colony Vasantha Mullai Nagar gets formed in agriculture land. Metaphorically this Nagar becomes symbolic of the changes happening in rural life. Murthy goes there to have sexual relations with a woman, we have his coming of age also in the novel. In the end, when Rajendran's daughter elopes and marries a Dalit, it is in a house in Vasantha Mullai Nagar she is kept.

There is a brilliant scene in the novel when they clear up the forest land to build the plot, all the trees are cut, bushes are cleared, there was for a long time some wolves living in this forest, they come into the village and are killed by the street dogs in the village. People throw stones at it, the wolf becomes a metaphor of a crumbling world. The world of Somu and Kaliamurthy is giving way to the world of Murthy and Gopal. There are new values, Murthy at the end says they should allow his sister to live with the Dalit guy she elopes with. But the powerful Gopal who makes so much money by sand quarrying and who is prominent in local politics is also conservative like the old world. In a sense, the novel documents the confused state of Tamilnadu today, at one side we live in modern capitalistic world order but also secretly are casteist. Yet the new world is inevitable, but ironically it seems to be learning all the things that it should not learn from the old world

மூர்த்தி 💚💚💚 அவன் பேசும் வார்த்தைகள், அவன் நினைக்கும் விஷயங்கள் எல்லாம் அட்டகாசம்!

முக்கியமாக சோமு மற்றும் அவரின் மனைவி சுந்தரவள்ளி வளர்ந்த விதம் இடையே நடந்த கல்யாணம் ,காதல் கதையை கார்ல் மார்க்கஸ் ஒரு கவிதையை போல எழுதியிருக்கிறார்.

மாணிக்கம், ரத்தினம்.. அதுவும் ரத்தினம் மனதில் வெளியே தெரியாமல் இருக்கும் சிறிய சாதி பசம்.

ரத்தினத்தின் பல கேள்விகளக்கு மூர்த்தி கலியமூர்த்தியிடம் தனது சோமு தாத்தா, புலவர், மாணிக்கம் வைத்து அதற்கான பதிலை சொல்லிவிட்டான்.. ❤❤❤

புத்தக விழாவின் டாப் டென் விற்பனையில் இடம் பிடித்த நாவல் என்பதைத் தாண்டி இந்த நாவலை படிக்க எனக்கிருந்த முக்கியமான காரணம், நூலாசிரியர் எழுதிய ஒரு கட்டுரை... அரசு ஊழியர்களின் போராட்டமும் அதை இடது கையால் தள்ளும் பொது மக்களுக்கும் இடையேயான உளவியலை ஆராய்ந்த ஒரு கட்டுரை. மேலும் அந்த கட்டுரையில் அரசு ஊழியர்கள், தங்களின் பதவி உயர உயர அதிகாரத்தையும் அடிமைத்தனத்தையும் எப்படி ஒருங்கே பெறுகின்றனர் என்ற பார்வை இவரின் எழுத்தை நோக்கி என்னை நகர்த்தியது...

தீம்புனல் - கும்பகோணத்திற்கு அருகில் ஏதோ ஒரு கிராமத்தில் மண்ணை நம்பி வாழ்ந்த ஒரு குடும்பத்தின் மூன்று தலைமுறை கதை தீம்புனல்... பல ஆயிரம் வருடங்களாக விவசாயத்தையே முதன்மைத் தொழிலாக நம்பி வாழ்ந்த மனிதர்கள், சென்ற நூற்றாண்டின் இறுதியில் அதை கைவிட்டு வேறு தொழில்களுக்கு நகரத் தொடங்கினர் இந்த மாற்றம் நடந்த புள்ளியில், அந்த transition phase ல் கதை நகர்கிறது... முதல் தலைமுறை மனிதரான சோமு முழு விவசாயியாக, இரண்டாம் தலைமுறை மனிதரான ராஜேந்திரன் முதலில் விவசாயியாக பின் காலப்போக்கில் ஹார்ட்வேர் கடை தொழிலாழியாக, மூன்றாவது தலைமுறையான மூர்த்தி விவசாயத்திலிருந்து முற்றிலும் வெளியேறி அலுவலக பணியை தேடிச் செல்பவனாக இருக்கிறார்கள்.. இந்த மாற்றம் என்பது அந்த ஒரு குடும்பத்தில் நிகழ்ந்த மாற்றம் மட்டும் அல்ல, ஒட்டுமொத்த தமிழகத்தின் மாற்றமாகவே இருந்திருக்கிறது என்பதே நாவல் சொல்லும் செய்தி. அதை சரிபார்க்க நம் பால்யத்தை திரும்பி பார்த்தால் போதும்...இந்த நாவலை படித்து முடித்ததும் இந்த நாவல் மூன்று அடுக்குகளை கொண்டதாக தோன்றுகிறது...

1. Story - கதைமாந்தர்கள் வழியாக முன்னும் பின்னுமாக நான்-லீனியர் முறையில் நகரும் கதை.
2. Demographics - கதை நிகழும் இடம் மற்றும் மக்கள் சார்ந்த விவரணை
3. Introspective description- கதை மாந்தர்களை சுற்றி நிகழும் சம்பவங்களை அவர்கள் எப்படி அணுகுகிறார்கள் அல்லது வாசிப்பவன் எப்படி புரிந்து கொள்வது.

முதல் அடுக்கான கதையை நகர்த்திய விதம், பாத்திர படைப்பு, உரையாடல்கள் (குறைந்த அளவு தான் என்றாலும்) போன்ற அனைத்திலும் அட்டகாசம் செய்திருக்கிறார். இதில் இடம் பெற்ற சம்பவங்கள் அனைத்தும் 70 அல்லது 80 களில் பிறந்த அனைவருக்கும் பரிட்சயமாக இருக்கும். கதையில் வரும் முக்கால்வாசி கதாபாத்திரங்கள் என் வாழ்வில் கடந்து வந்தவர்களை நினைவு படுத்துகிறது. ஒவ்வொரு அத்தியாயமும் ஒரு சிறுகதையை படித்த உணர்வை தந்தது.

இரண்டாவது அடுக்கான கதை நிகழும் இடத்தை பற்றிய விவரணை நன்றாக இருந்தாலும் தனித்து தெரிகிறது. அது தனித்து தெரிவதை தவிர்த்திருக்கலாம் என்று தோன்றியது.

எனக்கு இந்த மூன்றாவது நிலை தான் வாசிக்கும் போது பிரச்சினையாக தெரிந்தது.. வாசகனாக எனக்கு இதில் வேலையே இல்லாதது போன்ற ஒரு உணர்வு ஏற்பட்டது.. எல்லாவற்றையும் கட்டுரை தொனியில் விளக்கம் அளிப்பது ஒரு சில இடங்களில் சிறப்பாக இருந்தாலும், பல இடங்களில் கட்டுரையை படிக்கின்ற உணர்வை தருகிறது..

படித்து முடித்தவுடன் மனதில் தோன்றியதை எழுதிவிட்டேன் இனிமேல் தான் எழுத்தாளரோட பக்கத்திற்கு சென்று மற்றவர்கள் என்ன சொல்லியிருக்கிறார்கள் என பார்க்க வேண்டும்.
