Blood of Angels

Rate this book
When I learned the truth of what I was seventy years ago, let’s just say, I didn’t take it well.

I’m not human. I never was.

I’m a homunculus crafted by two creatures for their benefit. Azrael, the archangel of death, made me to be his daughter and Asmodeus, the archdemon of lust, created me to be his wife.

That’s the simplest part of my life right now.

Now, there’s a murderous cult in the city of Boston who’s abducting angels and demons. I thought this had nothing to do with me, but Octavian, the cult’s leader, wants to show me how very wrong I was.

I’m trapped between my desire to fight the cult, and fighting my desire for Asmodeus. He loves me, and I loved him once. But in the face of all his lies, I’m not sure if I can—or should—love him again.

With Octavian closing in, taking more and more of the archangels and archdemons for some mysterious purpose, I may never get the chance to decide how I feel.

I may not make it through this at all.

This is the second book in the Halfway Between series and this picks up where we left off previously.
In this book, I got more of a sense of Alistair/Asmodeus as we get to peek into the past through a series of Veils flashbacks this also gave me some much-needed insight into the current dynamics at play between them both.
I loved the unique take on heaven and hell and also the dynamic between brothers Asmodeus and Michael, in fact, Michael was an absolute hoot.
Still not warming to Veil though I did start to thaw later slightly towards the finish, shes just so judgemental and self-righteous when it comes to her arch-demon Lover but then Azriel gets a free pass for the exact same thing, totally hypocritical.
Asmodeus I adored I'm still #teamAsmodeus to the core, I thought he was patience personified and I felt for him entirety: his deep loneliness while surrounded by others was heartbreaking, the world around him constantly evolving and shifting, those he loves dying leaving him behind again to repeat the whole sorry cycle.
Is it wrong just to want something for your own and in my opinion the punishment just doesn't fit the crime here.
I also liked his other side his more demon persona of pure wicked intent was just so toe-curlingly delicious I'm not surprised Veil couldn't hold out for long.
Veil herself was so much like a spoilt child massively acting out against her parents, her time alone over the last seventy years is the human equivalent of having a teenage tantrum.
But despite my reservations, these two are liquid fire and have some definite chemistry.
So yeh enjoyed this it was again well written and I especially adored the twist at the end looking forward to the next one.
I voluntary reviewed a copy of Blood of Angels (Halfway Between #2).

I don't know, man. Am I being unfair? Am I unconsciously comparing this to the amazingness that was Kingsley's Masks of Under series? Or Asmodeus to Aon? If so, no wonder I'm being left kind of disappointed.
Because here's the thing... I just... don't like Asmodeus? There, I said it. I think he's boring, totally blah. Veil keeps referring to him as dark, as a monster, yet the only "dark" trait I was able to pick up from him was that he's into rough sex. That's it.
The plot dragged quite a bit, too, what with Veil repeatedly trying to resist his advances and failing miserably at it, then pitying herself and hating him and everyone around her for it afterwards. Michael was right, she was being such a drama queen all the time and I kept wishing for the kickass heroine I came to love in the first book.

BUT! What I will be coming back for again and again, and what warrants a three star-rating anyway, is the secondary characters. I just adore them. Connie and Gabe. Melon, the endearing ball of yuck, and Michael.. oh, Michael. I loved all their interactions, banter and loyalty. The only thing missing in this weird motly crew of priests, monsters and archangels/archdemons is a badass female sidekick.

So.. I'm still hooked and anxiously waiting for book #3!

I enjoyed this but not as much as the first one. I can't connect with Veil at all for some reason and I don't feel the emotion as much between her and Asmo as I did between Lydia and Aon but I felt like we got more time with Lydz and Aon as characters whereas this is a little bit more faster paced.

I felt the story dragged a little in the beginning but picked up in the middle and I stayed up to read it! (Sorry in advance to my boss as I do a rendition of a walking zombie into work tomorrow).

The Asmo/Veil sizzly scenes... enough said. Give me a lake of water and dump it over my head immediately because I am sweating. When Asmo goes all demony is the BEST. I love bad, scary, villainous 'heroes' so any hints of that (even the smallest bit) and I'm like OK hello here I am I am ready 4 u.

Melon - I love u forever. I am evil eyeing you Kathryn.

Still hate Richard and for good reason this time - sorry my fellow spectacle wearing friend.

Gabe and Connie - ma main homiesss. I missed them a bit in this book! I wanted more of my wee priesties.

Michael - wasn't expecting him to be the way he was AT ALL. He was highly amusing.

The ending.... Dear lord the creep factor has set in. I am v mad at Asmo and I slightly want to punch him in the face, though I do feel sorry for him because he is such a lonely wee soul and my heart breaks for him a little bit.... BUT I AM STILL MAD GODDAMNIT.

Can't wait for the next book!!!

Unfortunately, this one dragged for me and I ended up skimming some parts. The world is still super interesting, and I still like the characters but the plot was developing far too slow for me...

What an amazing sequel to Shadow Of Angels!❣️
There were so many revelations and with new characters entering the scene, it was a roller coaster ride!
Blood Of Angels picks up immediately from the cliffy, that was at the end of Shadow Of Angels! We get to meet Michael the archangel and he's such a hoot!😂 Lol! At the end of book one, I was really worried for Veil and her group, but turns out I shouldn't have! Because Michael is such a wonderful addition to it!

We also get to learn even more about heaven, hell and earth! This part was really fascinating because I've read many books with angels/demons that have their own take on mythology and creation with extensive imagination, but the world-building in this one is pretty simple and I love how the author tackled the subject!(You'll have to read the book to find out! No spoilers!)

Veil was quite problematic in this book with her mixed feelings of self-resentment, attraction and confusion! But, I can understand why she feels this way, so I think we should cut her some slack! I loved how Michael basically told her to just pull her head out of her ass and decide! Because she would've kept waffling between hating Asmodeus and lusting after him if he hadn't done it!

And now to the my favorite part - Asmodeus and Veil! I lovvved these two together! The steamy scenes were 🔥🔥🔥 and I was fanning myself while reading them! Plus, it was great to see the contrast between Alistair, who was trying his best to be human, and Asmodeus (demon level maxxx+hotness)! The flashback scenes were amazing and they slowly gave us more hints about their past together!

Also, we get to finally meet Octavian and he's a bag of nuts! The last chapter had me like 😱!
Why must you do this to us Kat?😢
Please give us the next book soon!!!
And I miss Melon so much! Hope we get to see him again in the next book!

Haven't started this series yet? What are you waiting for? Go grab it!

Blood Of Angels took a turn I wasn't expecting but can't deny that I liked it. Veil is now having to deal with her emotions towards Alistair as he is here in the flesh now. He comes with a hilarious sidekick though. I didn't expect Michael but I found him absolutely hilarious. He was a good fit into Veil's little tribe.

More truths are exposed and lies revealed. Even though Veil is right in her mixed up feelings about Alistair, I still fell in love with him. His vulnerable side just kind of drags you into his depths, and now I love him.

I agreed with Michael, Veil's self loathing was getting tiresome. I understand it, but at the same time I wanted her kickass self to get her head straight. More serious shit is going on, rely on those in your corner instead of fighting them. Like I said, I understand it though.

Blood Of Angels delved deeper into the insane world Kathryn Ann Kingsley created. Shocking truths, heartbreaking lies, and a bad guy who just won't fecking quit will leave you begging for the next book!

Wow!! I didn’t see that coming and I can’t deny that I didn’t love it. This series continues to be intense, intriguing and suspenseful. Veil is having difficulty when it comes to her emotions towards Alistair now that he is a physical being. Let me say his sidekick, Michael is absolutely flipping hilarious and a nice addition to her squad. More secrets are revealed and lies told, but Veil seems to persevere through it all. I can’t wait for this series to continue!!

Thank you, Kat - for writing these ahead of time and only waiting 1 month in between releases. Because after that ending - I am DYING to know what happens next!!

Note - Spoilers for Shadow of Angels are in this review.
Summary:
In the second installment of the Halfway Between series - we pick up right where we left off in Shadow of Angels. Veil, in a desperate attempt to get help with the cult threatening her and the people she cares about, has released Asmodeus from his isolation in the spirit plane. Despite the hurt and lies, she knows her best chance of finding and defeating the cult is with HIS help. With the help of the archdemon and the new arrival of an archangel- Michael, her team set out to investigate. Veil soon finds out that her feelings for Asmodeus are MORE than complicated. There are too many memories, too much history, and her strength to fight him is fading.

Review:
This series continues to be an intense, magnetic, brutal force of nature between two lost souls. The writing is outstanding and flows seamlessly. It is so easy to read and get lost in this world, while still providing captivating dialogue and plot twists you didn't see coming.

What I liked:
Veil's fears still dictate a lot of her actions and choices, but she grows a lot in this book. Her guilt of still having feelings for Asmodeus, despite all he has done, is addressed in a wonderful scene with Mike. May we all be so fortunate to have friends that tell us when we are being idiots. It was a great character growth scene.

Mike was a great addition to the team that I didn't know I needed. He brings lightheartedness and humor to some tough situations and gives some hard truths to Veil when she needs it.

I really liked the flashbacks again! I was worried they might be over with since Asmodeus was released, but we get some more history and backstory of the relationship between him and Selina that I really enjoyed.

I loved learning more about Octavian and his motivations! I won't get into it too much- as not to spoil anything- but the ending revelations about him are just too good.

Of course, our main man Asmodeus is the star of the show here. I love him more and more as this series progresses. Despite being an extremely intimidating and powerful archdemon, he has a vulnerability to him that makes him so interesting. His relationship with Veil is so complex and layered. The chemistry is so off the charts in this book. When the two of them are together you can feel the passion and intensity. The scene where Veil finds out what is under his scarf is so boiling hot, you might need an ice bath after you finish reading it. Kat proves to be the absolute master of creating the most complicated and attractive villains (anti-heroes?). We are not worthy.

What I didn't like:
I won't lie... I would have liked more of the side characters. I'm selfish, greedy, and wouldn't take anything out to make room for them, but I want to know more! Conrad and Gabe are just so cool, of course I want to spend more time with them. And I'll take anything with Azrael in it also!

Final Thoughts:
I'm addicted.... what will I do until March?!

Blood of Angels is the 2nd book in the Halfway Between series which means, YOU HAVE TO READ Shadow of Angels (Book 1) FIRST! I can't state that enough, as the brilliant Kathryn Ann Kingsley is next level with series' that are brilliantly EPIC, answers to questions creating even more questions, & cliffhangers. Seriously, I NEVER saw this story going the way it did, but there's not any doubt that LOVED IT SO MUCH! That's the beauty of this author, you never know what's coming! It makes her twists so intense, to the point that I can't even drop f-bombs anymore since I'm stunned to silence. For every question answered, 20 more pop up so that's where we are AGAIN. Veil is gone a bit backwards in this story, as her self loathing got old, but her hilarious sidekick, Michael stated that fact very eloquently to her face. And can I say, Michael is doing his very best to steal this show, and I'm inclined to let him since he keeps her in check with hard truths. A bunch of intense things are going on with the very dangerous cult shenanigans, and it's time for Veil to get back to her bad a** self to take care of business. As for Asmodeus, he's growing on me, especially with all those complicated sides & his true feelings for Veil. So yeah, I'm dying inside again, since it's not March & Ms. Kingsley is definitely setting the stage for even bigger EPIC goodness leading up to what I have NO DOUBT will be an explosive conclusion, and I NEED SO MUCH MORE! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL!

Holy Schnickeys!!!
Took her long enough!
I'm not a violent person by nature but I really really wanted to grab Veil and introduce her head to a solid object on multiple occasions
Wait ✋ there is hope for her yet!
So Michael was the last image we saw in book one and he opens this episode with an "Oh he 'll no you didn't!" that will have you reeling.
This was a complicated story with a lot of clues sprinkled about.
As the pieces fell into place I found myself enraptured by the interactions of the cast and the direction we were headed.
From "OMG 😲look out behind you" one page to "please no 😭" the next only to flip the page again and find my heart ❤ skipping a beat this episode kept me white knuckle clenching my kindle and fighting my inner child to not jump ahead.
This being a series we are naturally left poised on knifes razor-sharp edge trying to hang on to our sanity while tossing about all the possibilities that are ahead.

The last 35% gets pretty edgy - we get to meet the mastermind and🤐 ewwwww is all I can say about that, also the plot becomes a whole lot more twisted IMO!

If you enjoy your fantasy with a solid foundation, creative world building, a diverse cast and chocked full of suspense and action look no further

I loved the second installment of the Halfway Between series! There was suspense, action, horror, and plenty of sizzle—and oh, do I mean *plenty* of sizzle. Asmodeus was revealed in all his glory, and he did not disappoint. I looooove his wings. SO much. I’m such a wing girl, and it was even better that these wings acted like an extra pair of arms.

Veil/Selina showed more growth and finally let her herself listen to what Asmodeus had to say. But can she believe what he says? In her heart, she wants to trust him. She loves him still, after all, but…that’s all to be seen.

Again, I love Azrael. He’s such a lonely sweetheart. I just want to love on him so much. Seriously…this guy needs his own book and HEA. (I’m looking at you Kathryn)

Melon… **Clutches my heart**

And Octavian…that dude is f**ked up. Like…wow. I don’t know if I should pity him or hate him.

Overall, I’m so loving this series. I can’t wait for the final installment to discover what happens. The character relationships are wonderful, and I love their interactions together. Not big on the physical fighting to the near death, but the turn-out was so goooood. Come on March!

Confession time. I had my doubts about this series. It's good. Very well written. Original story and wonderful description. Also, freaking hilarious.
But. I wasn't that convinced after the first book.
After finishing this second book the only doubts that I had were 'If I don't sleep at all tonight I can finish this. Who needs rest. I need answers!'

This series is so controversial. Makes me wonder what is right or wrong, good or evil. Made me wonder if I was crazy to keep rooting for Asmodeus after all he did.

I freaking loved how complex the villain was! He didn't do all these awful things because he was evil. He had actual reasons and plans. Crazy and fucked up but still. He wasn't just some cardboard, cliche villain that wanted to rule the world.

I kinda felt really bad for Maelon. He was really funny. But Michael made up for his absence.

I'm so proud of myself for not reading this book until the next one came out. Now I can find out what happens right away! Yay!

3.5 but rounding up because there is something about this author's books that 8 just like.

Plot wise, this starts straight away from the end of the first book. Veil is struggling to emotionally deal with the fact that Asmodeus is back in her life and how she's stuck working with him to sltru and stop the cult. The two priests were in this book, but very much in the sidelines, but we have Michael, as in the archangel Michael, who was not what I was expecting and who I really liked.

The plot swings between the gang trying to track down, and stop, the cult and Veil and Asmodeus trying to sort thiugh the complicated mess that is their relationship.

So, the things I liked: the development of Admodeus and Veil's relationship. Now, this relationship won't be for everyone, and the physical stuff borders too closely to dub con (although I appreciate the author always goes out of her way to ensure we know it is consensual, or I'd dropnthe book, as dub con is a hard no for me typically) and is more violent than you would normally get in a book of this type. I like it because I feels authentic to the character. He's an archdemon, and he behaves like it. So many paranormal books have 'monsters' who are just pretty boys with fangs or who shapeshift or whatever. Asmodeus is a complex character, who is not a good guy, although, in his own way he mostly tries to be. The author writes these types of characters really well, for me.

I really liked Michael as well and his banter with Admodeus was amusing.

What I didn't like: Veil is sometimes a hard character to like. I get how furious she is with Asmodeus, but her wingey attitude got a bit old after a while, although it's understandable. The biggest issue for me was secret keeping and Veil doing something unforgivable stupid at the end. Again, emotionally it fits with her character, but it pissed me off nonetheless. I'm. A little bored of the 'oh no Admodeus betrayed me' thing by this point, and I like the stupid heroine trope even less.

Nevertheless, I really enjoy this author's work and I would urge anyone that enjoyed the Masks of Under series to give this a try. If you had issues with that series then you will probably have the same with this one, however.

I’m marking this review with spoilers. I try to stay away from that mostly because I like my reviews to be accessible and I hate spoilers myself. However, it is pretty much impossible to talk about this book without spoilers so here we are. My “spoilers” are mostly in the form of references which are pretty niche. If you don’t get the references you won’t get the spoilers either.

Okay, okay here’s the thing...

I found Veil/Selina pretty annoying in the first book. And sadly that doesn’t change in this book. She drives me insane with her anger/stubbornness/general distrust of everything and everyone. Just when you think it’s on the cusp of resolving, the character dives headlong back into the BS. It’s infuriating. I get that the series wouldn’t have conflict without it, but Veil literally makes me want to slap or shake her. Maybe a bit of both? I also understand why she is this way, but at some point it becomes positively exhausting. You know it’s exhausting when other characters are pointing it out to her in an effort to help her resolve the conflict /facepalm.

Above being said, I couldn’t put the fuckin’ book down. Quite literally couldn’t stop reading the thing. I avoided it and was drawn to it. I loved and hated it. I hated that I loved it. Aw Christ, I feel the same way about this book that Veil feels about Asmodeus. 😖 Fucks sakes....

The plot really feels like it’s an amalgamation of this anime Rin: Daughters of Mnemosyne and an otome I played called Code Realize. Even some of the twists are similar. It’s really uncanny.

I also wanted to say (as I did for the first book) that the flashback sequences were just beautiful. They really helped flesh out the characters and add depth. Really loved those.

I’m going to read the last book. But I’m going to take some time. Like I did between the first book and this one. It’s not you book, it’s me. Kudos to the author for screwing up my emotions too! 🤣

Book 2 in the 3 book series of Halfway Between.

I docked it a star because I was realllllly beginning to get sick of Vail's shiz. She was like a terrified stray snarling and lashing out without any rational thought. She preferred to run away from any emotional conflict with Alistair/Asmodeus.. but in a circle.. that led right back to the conflict... and then the cycle would repeat 8 billion times. I understand why she felt and acted that way, but after awhile my empathy ran out.
description

HOWEVER.

I fell more in love with Conrad.
"Faith in God isn't the same as faith in angels. As far as I can tell, you lot are a bunch o' useless fucks."

and Maleon.
"What's happening?" Maleon mumbled and rubbed his eyes with his tiny, overstuffed hands. "Why so angry so early?"

And Michael. The handsome puppy that he is.
"And they say I suck at the angel shit. C'mon, V. Let's go."
...
"Jesus Christ, Michael!" she shouted at the archangel. "Turn the fucking dial down."
"I told you it was meant for bigger things." Michael pointed at his chest, metal gauntlet clacking against itself as he moved. "I don't come in 'subtle' mode, sweetheart."

And Alistair/Asmodeus.
Where as in book 1 I was on the fence as to how I felt about him, this book tipped me over into the territory of "Me gusto mucho."

I’m obsessed with Kingsley’s Masks of Under series so I thought I would love this new series but I can not for the life of me get into it.

Book one was okay. It was slow and not a lot of exciting things happened. I liked Veil and was curious about her and Asmodeus, especially with the cliffhanger, so I finally picked up book two.

And now I’m having trouble getting through book two so I’m shelving it for now as a DNF which is so disappointing.

The biggest thing is... I’m BORED. Like, it’s an absolute snooze fest. I was ready and hoping for a badass anti hero in Asmodeus AKA Alistair but he’s literally as tame as a kitten and an absolute bore. Add a very annoying and constantly bitchy Veil, and the biggest issue, a VERY boring plot and... I’m out.

Compared to the imagination, angst, chemistry, romance, characters, amazing world, and pull you in plot with twists and turns of MoU, this series isn’t even close to the same level.

Sadly I had to DNF this series. I have zero connection to Veil or Asmodeus. The reason she went crazy and killed his cult didnt really make sense. She knew she was meant for him so why was it such a long shot that she could have been created? Seemed a little out of balance. Asmodeus just seems like a love sick boy instead of the king of demons. The only characters I liked were azrael, Connie, gabe, and melon. Michael’s dialogue really set me over the edge and I couldn’t deal with the ridiculous way he spoke. Ughh sucks bc I’ve loved every single series so far that I’ve read of Kingsley but this really fell short.

Blood of Angels Review

This book made my head spin and I loved every second of it!
Nothing is as black and white as it appears and everything seems to be half truths and raw emotions between Veil and Asmodeus and those emotions definitely come to their boiling point between them. It's just to bad there are more secrets and some pretty nasty bad guys intent on getting in the way. Things are not looking good for Veil by the end but when Angels and Demons are on your side is think anything is possible.
Can't wait to start the next book and I definitely recommend this one.

Good story

Spoiler Alert

I am definitely emotionally invested in these characters. I love everyone who isn't Octavian or his crew. The story is unlike anything I've read before. I am enjoying it. That being said, the descriptions of certain characters are incredibly repetitive. I also found the smutty scene that I feel like I waited for forever, to be the same. (Although, still satisfying.) I loved the Selina vs. Asmodeus fight turned.. more. I feel like I shouldn't have, but.. c'est la vie.

okay

I like the characters. But I feel like the emotions and relationship just cycled. And I understand that a eons old demon doesn’t change his stripes, but the vicious back and forth and immediate knee jerk reaction got upsetting. I wanted some progress and felt while there was some, it wasn’t enough for book 2.

Dnf it just wasn’t my cup of tea, i have found i don’t like betrayal tropes, relationship forgiveness, body betrayal and the likes. I wanted her to be strong and hate Asmo so bad like she did for 70 years, i was looking for any other romantic interest, anyone at all. It all boils down to personal preference though at the end!
